Fresh parsnips make delicious custard pies. Think of this as kin to pumpkin pie, served as dessert with whipped cream. To cut the tapered roots into same-size pieces that will cook evenly, slice the narrow ends crosswise into ½-inch pieces and the wide stem ends lengthwise in halves or quarters and then into ½-inch chunks. When the parsnips are pureed, you should have about 1½ cups. It should not be perfectly smooth; this adds to the old-fashioned charm. PASTRY 1 cup flour 1 tablespoon granulated sugar ¼ teaspoon salt 6 tablespoons cold unsalted butter, cut up 1 tablespoon ice water mixed with 1 tablespoon vinegar, or more if necessary Extra flour (for sprinkling) 1. Have on hand a 9-inch pie plate. 2. In a bowl, combine the flour, granulated sugar, and salt. With your fingers or two blunt knives, cut the butter into the flour mixture until it resembles coarse meal. Add the ice water mixture and stir with a fork until the dough holds together. If necessary, add more ice water, 1 teaspoon at a time. Shape the dough into a flat disk and wrap in foil. Refrigerate for 20 minutes. 3. On a lightly floured counter, roll the dough to a 12-inch round. Lift it onto the rolling pin and ease it into the pan. Fold the overhang under like a hem, making it even with the pan edge. Press the edges with the tines of a fork. Prick the bottom well all over. Freeze for 20 minutes. 4. Set the oven at 375 degrees. 5. Line the pastry with foil and fill it with dried beans. Bake for 15 minutes. Carefully lift out the foil and beans. Continue baking for 10 minutes, or until the edges are golden. Total baking time is 25 minutes. Leave the oven on. FILLING 1 pound parsnips, peeled and cut into ½-inch chunks Salt, to taste 2 eggs ½ cup granulated sugar 2 tablespoons maple syrup ¾ teaspoon ground cinnamon ½ teaspoon ground ginger ¼ teaspoon ground nutmeg ¾ cup half-and-half 1 cup heavy cream, softly whipped with 2 tablespoons confectioners' sugar 1. In a saucepan, combine the parsnips, salt, and water to cover. Bring to a boil, lower the heat, and cover the pan. Simmer for 15 minutes or until the parsnips are tender. Drain and cool for 5 minutes. 2. In a bowl with a potato masher, work the parsnips until they resemble lumpy mashed potatoes. Beat in the eggs, granulated sugar, maple syrup, cinnamon, ginger, nutmeg, and half-and-half. Pour the mixture into the pie crust. 3. Bake the pie for 30 minutes or until the filling is set. Cool and serve with whipped cream.

Greenhouses got a bit of an update in 1.18, top slabs *should* work just fine. It can take up to a day for the ground to register that they're in an actual greenhouse. I've also had problems when I tilled the soil first and then built around it - it never updated, but as soon as I broke it and replaced the soil in the finished greenhouse it worked just fine.

Ah, excellent to know. Didn't realize that had been changed! IIRC since the blocks in a greenhouse don't all update at once, it can sometimes take multiple days for them all to update, since it does a random tick update check for them.

Should put glass slabs above the water in the greenhouse. Also, use the cob blocks instead of the larch logs, on top, in between the greenhouses. Then the ground would be the same height as the side slope. Just ideas I had, feel free to call them your own if you like them. Very nice greenhouse build. Lately in I try to move as far South as far as possible before setting up a home. Winters are nice but just like real life they get old quick. I have never done the random weather pattern settings but may try it.
@Kurazarrh
@Kurazarrh 9 ай бұрын
Thank you! :) If you want to speed up that process, you can always just hit the "Customize" button when generating your world and set your starting position to "warm" or "hot" ;) As for "patchy" climate, it's... a bit weird. You'll get hot climates in the north, sure, but they'll still experience winter, and this can cause their native fruit trees to just die off in the first winter. Really wild temperature swings (like 50C in summer, -10C in winter) are pretty common.
@seangranite3781
@seangranite3781 9 ай бұрын
@@Kurazarrh I will try that. I kind of dislike the desert and even the jungles, because of how dense they are. For some reason, I always choose temperate and head south. Then after the first year, if I still get long winters. I’ll head south again in February until there is no snow and find a place to settle in.
@Sarafimm2
@Sarafimm2 9 ай бұрын
I use the Customize a lot. I used to use Patchy World Climate, but with all the changes you can do in the Customize World and with the world mods, I don't even bother anymore. And as Kurazarrh says the fruit trees die because they're in the wrong biome. So, now I use Realistic and Temperate World Climate every time. If you hate the snow and ice, you can disable those. If you hate that the animals get thin and give less food/fat during winter months, you can disable that, too. Both are separate. Bees like dry, warm conditions like warmer temperate forests or savanna biomes so you could change your world to hot, but be aware that doing so will cause the temps to hit 50C (over 100F) in summer and you might be able to get ONE crop grown before summer hits and kills your crops and then you won't be able to grow anything until late summer/early fall. It makes for a more difficult/challenging start, but mods can make it easier to survive if you don't mind using them--or hunting all the time. The biggest thing for me is to find the right stone types when looking for a new world. I want limestone or chalk not to far away. I want to be in or right next to a hard stone biome like granite, andesite, peridotite, or basalt. Maybe a stone type I want to use in my builds, too. Then I reuse that seed over and over because the seed usually carries over the stone types even if the terrain changes. I'm currently in a slate, andesite (spawn), limestone, peridotite seed. All of them form a relatively "cool" palette, but because my world is Hot/Humid (settings near the bottom of the Customize World screen) I have the standard tree types plus lots of pine, redwood, and bald cypress, too, which add warmth to my builds.

@@Sarafimm2 thank you very much most of what you mention I have used or know about. I guess I’ll go back to disabling snowfall. I don’t mind the temperature changes much. The greenhouses look really good. I like the idea of year round growing within them and then fields of crops all - though I wish there was like 'display' crops. Like how people in the other block game would create thousands of blocks of wheat fields they never harvested just to have massive rolling fields of wheat. But that is neither here nor there. On the here, the building looks great. I like the stairs down and the potential exit to the top of the future hill that will grow there. The grass on the side making it feel like there is grass on the ceiling is good too. I do agree on replacing the block underneath the cobble to make it seem more structurally supported. The place really does look good! Great job!
@Kurazarrh
@Kurazarrh 9 ай бұрын
Thank you! So glad you like how the build came out! As for displaying crops, I 100% agree. You CAN sort of do that; if your crops mature before they take heat or cold damage, they generally should stay at the mature state and not wither, though if you harvest them, you'll still only get 50% of the produce. I do wish, however, that you could plant crops in planters and just have them as decorative plants around the house. I'd love to decorate with some amaranth!.

@Kurazarrh
@Kurazarrh 5 ай бұрын
No, torches don't actually give off any heat (unlike in, say, Rimworld), so they won't do anything to heat a greenhouse. One thing I'm not sure about is whether artificial lighting helps crops grow at all, or not--or if artificial lighting just LETS them grow during normal growing times.

Soo this is random but one of the things that bothers me is that Bloomeries are one and destroy. Is there an advanced version that is reusable? And if not in main is there a mod for it cause like I think even if there were more advanced materials needed a reusable bloomery makes sense.
@Kurazarrh
@Kurazarrh 9 ай бұрын
While you have to break the bloomeries to get your goods out of them, you get about 75% of the material back, so it's not too bad (and there's fire clay everywhere). It's fairly realistic--old-fashioned bloomeries would have bricks crack all the time, and many of them were actually just formed out of clay and broken entirely! As for mods, there are probably mods that give you back all the bricks that went into it, but I haven't looked.

@Kurazarrh
@Kurazarrh 9 ай бұрын
I don't generally bother with high-fertility soil. It takes MASSIVE quantities of rot to produce a useable amount of the stuff. Each barrel full of 64 rot produces enough fertilizer to make... a whopping 2 blocks of high-fert soil. Given that to get the rot, you have to grow enough food, wait for it to spoil, then pop it in a barrel for 20 days before you get your 2 blocks of high-fert soil, I find it's better to just use medium fertility soil because if you're doing a reasonable amount of exploration, you're likely to find more than enough terra preta well before you can fill out your fields with high-fert soil.

The 4.4 years readout was specifically because it was like -14C outside. More realistically, a freshly sealed crock of food, assuming the ingredients were also fresh and it wad sealed right after cooking, should be about 1.1-1.4 years. It depends heavily on whether any sunlight reaches the cellar, too.
