No Spark From One Side of a Waste Spark Ignition Coil

Incandescent Test Light connected to ground for this test, as we are looking for two things:
1. RPM drops as we short out spark from each cylinder (tells us cylinder contribution and which cylinder is misfiring)
2. The distance the spark jumps from each coil tower. (spark test or coil test)
Because we have spark on one half of this coil (2 towers per coil, 3 coils total on this V-6), the primary circuit is not a concern (ignition inputs, computer driver and control circuits for the coil itself are all good)

We had our alero "Gerdy" for 7 years. Silver 4 door 2.4 ld9. Bought at auction for $1600 with 69k on the clock. Ran it up to 149k daily driving and towing a small trailer. I had just changed the water pump (timing was FUN, lol), radiator, alternator, suspension all around, rack out plus steering kit, cv axles, bearing assemblies all the way around, brake calipers/fresh pads, trans flush/filter, plugs/boots, 4 fresh tires always oil changed full syn every 3k, air filter every 10k, and im sure more I've forgotten. Last month the wife put her 10ft down into the creek. Oh well the frame is bent and with other previous wrecks the body work became the death blow. We picked up a "fresh" (read straight and clean body/frame) black 99 3.4 coupe that doesn't currently run for $500 bucks, and now whats thats left of Gerdy is up on the lift getting stripped out to put on the black one to rights. Honestly think black one just needs fresh gas, wish me luck. 😅

While car was running the open plug wire (plug wire removed from spark plug) the vibration was causing the wire to start to possibly fall into belt/fan so i grabbed it back as far as i could to move it away and all i saw was looked like lightening come out of the plug end and come all the way to my hand and WHACK, WHACK WHACK before i threw my hand up smacking under the hood while the entire class looked at me and i tried to play cool and play it off. Guess my hand at that distance was least path of resistance.

You can totally have that happen as the harmonic that is created is more cancelled out with 2 cylinders misfiring out of 6 instead of 1.

Put short Pieces of vacuum hose from the coil into the boot start the engine, then touch it with the test light to ground Doing a cylinder balance test the further away from the hose Will give you a nice blue Ark about an inch away. If it’s a small, yellow spark, the coil is weak. We call it a poor man’s coil performance test

Dont even need the test light. Pull the boot off till you can hear the rpm drop and you know that cylinder is contributing.
@ScannerDanner
@ScannerDanner 4 ай бұрын
It is never good to do that! You always want to give the spark somewhere to go as coil and driver damage can occur. Secondly, I'm not just doing an RPM drop test, I'm also looking at the distance the spark can jump from each tower. The method I'm showing is THE way to do both of these things

Bad ECM’s will cause this same behavior though coil pack is the easiest fastest gamble. If that doesn’t fix it, open the ecm and you’ll probably see one of the transistors is swollen (bad)
@ScannerDanner

A bad ecm driver would cause a no spark on two towers, not one

Actually, electrocution means death by electricity. The term was created when the electric chair was invented. Otherwise, we're just talking electric shock
@michaelodonnell8306
@michaelodonnell8306 4 ай бұрын
It's a shock. Electrocution means you were killed or severely wounded by a shock. Ignition is a pulse, high frequency by definition, and runs over the surface of your skin and a little into the muscle. Painful, not deadly. Not trying to give you a hard time but using the right words elevates your credibility.

Use the clamp on an old school timing light bud!! If it’s got spark the light flashes…. No flash no spark zero danger. Come on young gun! 👍👍
@ScannerDanner
@ScannerDanner 4 ай бұрын
1.Weak spark can still trigger a timing light, making that test useless for what we are looking for. 2. I'm performing an RPM drop test to ID which cylinder is misfiring, again, something a timing light would be useless for. Watch the full length case study linked in the short!

It can very well be a death shock if your other hand is grounded and the current passes through your heart. I have PVCs (premature ventricular contractions) aka a premature heartbeat directly due to a Cadillac ignition coil with a leaking plug wire ... The amperage CAN KILL YOU
@ScannerDanner
@ScannerDanner 4 ай бұрын
No sir, not with an ignition coil. Doesn't matter. Amperage is too small.

@ScannerDanner

Not for weak spark. Weak spark will still fire a timing light! Also I've seen low compression cylinders NOT fire off a timing light due to the low kv demand from no compression. So the timing light test has too many variables.

But heres my point if one side of that coil is sparking something is very wrong , that system spark goes out one side of the coil through the lead jumps the plug gap goes through the block jumps the dead cylinder on exhaust back through the other lead back to the other side of the coil , it cant work on one side and not the other !!! It needs a full circuit! If its jumping one one side how is it getting back to coil ???
@ScannerDanner
@ScannerDanner Күн бұрын
It has a return path through the housing of the coil. This is actually very common

I have shown MANY bad ignition coils that measure good on an ohmmeter. When they measure bad, it's bad, but when they measure good, it can still be bad.
