Is the Lumix G95 a worthy upgrade over the G85 or are there better offerings from Panasonic?

G95 has a 1.25 crop(4K) vs the 1.1(4K) on the G85. The 16mp sensor has a slight lowlight improvement over the 20mp. G85 is a clear winner IMO

I have all 3, the G95D,G85,GX85. I don’t do much video, from a photography perspective, I can tell you the G95D offers a much mature body, better user interface, better controls, more dedicated custom buttons, and a much improved ergonomics, the G85 is too heavy for its size, smaller grip. The G95D feels lighter and it is bigger and easier to hold with a rounder grip. So, in terms of ease of use and comfort, the G95D wins. The G95D also offers Oled display and view finder, again, ease of use, so much better for checking focus, sharpness using either display. Now, the G95D fails where it matter the most, image quality, that 20MP sensor produces soft and hazy images that are not pleasing or appealing, life less, not exciting, and requires constant post image manipulation to sharpen them up and bring some life and excitement. The G85, although not as comfortable or easy to use with its weight and all the tiny little buttons, it does produces wonderful images that are sharp, rich and pleasing out of the box, very minimal post editing required if you think your image before you click the shutter. The worse offender in terms of being small, hard to use and uncomfortable is the GX85, the range finder style. The small body camera is too heavy for its size and no grip, so it becomes painful to use quickly. Because of the limited real state, the available physical buttons are tiny with very hard to read labels. The good thing is that the GX85 shares the same pleasing, sharp and rich image quality from the G85. And because how cute it is and how small it is and easy to take with you, it has been the one camera out of the 3 that I use the most. The GX85 has the highest rate of good shots with the lower shutter count out of the 3, meaning, it manages to get most images right on the first try. So there you have it, do you want a mature, comfortable to hold, and easy to use, well taught out interface, get the G95, you want best image quality out of the LUMIX G models, get the G85, you want the most pocketable and fun to have on you all the time, that can also produce constant good results, get the GX85.

Currently in 2023, there is only $100 between G85 and G95, so for all the benefits, I would personally recommend the G95 is easily worth the benefits it offers. (unless someone wants to go with APS-C). However, for indoor vlogging, just add enough LED lights in the room. Still great value for a G95 cam and 5x kit lens!!

Such a well done video! Have a g9, but find it a bit too big for hiking trips. Was debating on a (used) g85 or a G100. The former seems a better fit, albeit not sure it is much smaller than the G9. Will need to check.

I have the G95. I appreciate the 20mp sensor and processing, in camera charging and mic/headphone jax, better quality screens,120fps recording and l log. its continuous auto focus is actually decent and it isn't too big. The G9 is a bit big for my taste for a camera system that is meant to be small.

Thanks for your excellent videos! Is it just me, or the newer sensor introduced some kind of blue cast and high-tech effect to the image, that makes it looks a bit unreal? I had a GH5 and can relate that feel to the G95 in your footage. The G85, which I never owned, reminds me of my old GH2. Might a mix of difference in DR and AWB control, but might be also just my old-is-good leaning bias.

The funny thing about the G9 is that Panasonic has marketed this body as their flagship stills photography camera. That being said, Panasonic has loaded this body with a lot of video features. Quite the surprise. As a photographer, the 30’ video has never been an issue. The still and video output of this body is very satisfying. For me as a street photographer the size of the G9 is a little off putting. This isn’t a small body. The weight is OK if you are going to carry it all day. I don’t know. Maybe there is a lot of plastic in the body. If so that is good. I do not require an all magnesium body. I have a G85 but it doesn’t get a lot of use because I use the G9 a lot. My B cam is the GX85. Small. Light. Good IBIS. This is a very good street shooter. Wanted to upgrade to the GX9 but the improvements are incremental. I can’t tell the difference between 16 and 20 MPs. I’ve saved the money from the upgrade and simply purchased a nice small prime lens. Here is the dirty little secret the hammer manufactures don’t tell you. If the image quality from an older body was satisfactory enough a few years ago it won’t change now. A valid reason for upgrading your body is a new feature is added that you need or want. A quandary I have is the Panasonic autofocus. For years, they have been developing and improving their debt from defocus. The DFT is rather good for still images. For video, the focus is notoriously not sticky. When the new G9 mark two or G 10(whatever they decide to call it) how is the market? I will have to ask myself whether the new phase detection is worth upgrading the body for it. As I said, I’m not a videographer, so I’m leaning towards staying with the DFD. Sometimes good enough is good enough. Mask On Nurse Marty (Ret)

Since I already have quite a few m/43 lenses, G85 battery grip, and spare batteries trading in the G85 for a new G95 a few months back was worth the upgrade to get the LC mode feature.

Awesome video Nolan, I have a G85 for Vlogging and a Canon EOS 7d mkii for photography, my main use is a vlog camera, I've sat for hours reviewing cameras but always go back to my trusty G85, My main subject is filming motocross, I would love a camera that has really good autofocus and can record in 120fps so i can do Awesome slo mo, that's the only 2 things I need from a camera. Do you have any recommendations. I've thought ZV1 etc...but for vlogging it's just to close to your face.

Don't have a G95 to try it but I wonder what the image skin tones are like after putting it through Filmconvert Pro Nitrate Unlike any other colour editing programmes it works on the camera make and model's actual unique sensor output and colour data science in any of the cameras recording mode settings (vlog, cineD etc). Really impressive I have the plugin for Davini Resolve Studio but the have FCP etc versions. Filmcovert is really very different from the usual LUT approach to grading and all about achieving Cinematic Film emulation efficiently. Theres quite a few colorists and editors etc using it but tend not to talk about it because it gives you a advantage when getting jobs because you can complete work in a faster time frame.

Size and portability is a factor, and I think the G85 would suit this well. I also have a Nikon D780 with 24-120mm (5x lens) which is too big to take around for casual use and travel, and G85 12-60mm lens is basically a 5x lens, so this could be ideal for carry around travel. And the camera would be great as a B camera for video as well or vlogging selfie video in studio. Used in 2023 with kit lens the G85 is $250 below new in my area of Toronto which new is $900 CDN or $700 USD. Exchange rate is 35 percent from Canadian to US dollars. Thanks for comparing! I think G85 is enough for me compared to G95. Cheers!

Hey Nolan. Thank you for the videos. May I ask, in your opinion, is there a big difference in image quality (sharpness, dynamic range) between 16mp and 20mp sensors. I am looking for a small camera for casual photography to use with 12-60 and prime lenses and can't decide between gx85 and gx9. GX85 is currently about USD200 cheaper in place where I live. Thanks!
@NolanGunn
@NolanGunn 2 жыл бұрын
There’s a slight increase in both - the 20mp sensor is a good bit sharper then the 16, but I’d say the 16 has a nice “organic” feel to it like the GH4, but with a stop or so of dynamic range less then the 20mp. GX9 would be a great buy for photography plus the 20mm prime!

very interesting video. i’m wondering what camera to get. my budget restricts me to either G85, G95, or GX9 as i want to invest in lenses. i want something more video oriented than photography since my work is mostly in filmmaking. also, do micro four thirds lenses suffer from the m43 censor 2x crop? or the crop only occurs when using 35mm camera lenses?

Yeah, well, just the USB charging (and powering!) alone makes it worth the added cost for me. Unlimited recording time is another single feature that would make me chose G90 over the G80. Then there is proper slowmo, Live View Composite, headphone port, new sensor... Nobrainer as far as I'm concerned! Comparing a new kit to to used body-only is a bit silly I have to say though. Whether it's worth an *upgrade* though depends on whether or not the G80/G85 owner appreciates the added features of course :)

The G95 has 8 benefits compared to the G85 1) Live View Composite Mode 2) Battery and charging over USB-C 3) Low energy Bluetooth ( the G85 has only wifi ) 4) Headphone jack to monitor the audio of the video that your filming. 5) Slow motion video at 120fps vs 60 fps 6) Video clip length is unlimited. This only benefits you if you live in Europe because the G85 is only up to 30 minutes over there but you live in the US it is pretty much the same as the G85. So I guess no benefits if you live in the US ) 7) 20.3 Megapixel sensor ( similar to the G9 ) compared to the 16 ( this only benefits photographers but if you are a videographer then this does not benefit you at all ) 8) Better Face Tracking Continuous Autofocus than the G85. Here is the link to the video m.kzfaq.info/get/bejne/hZaYpdViv5bHkYk.html I was wondering since you have the S5. Is the S5 miles ahead better than the G85 and GH5 for low light video recording. How much more expensive are the lenses compared to the G85 ? Thanks for the information and tips.
@NolanGunn
@NolanGunn Жыл бұрын
Great points! One correction (that I got wrong too!) it isn’t USB-C. Otherwise, the S5 is definitely miles better then the G85 in almost every way. For lenses, you can get a fantastic 50 1.8 for around $400 used and plenty of other less expensive lenses.

@NolanGunn
@NolanGunn 2 жыл бұрын
Yes it does. You get more detail due to more megapixels and you get about a stop of dynamic range. Plus the raw files are a lot better out of that 20mp sensor.

Mr. Nolan Gunn! Very well presented video, and no doubt you are knowledgeable on whence you comment. What strikes me is all of this “comparison” and denial of the benefits of the G90/95 over the G80/85? At one time, I could understand the hesitation of upgrading from the G85, when price was factored in, but that is not the case now, and anybody that would try to make the argument for the G85 over the 95, is, to be quite blunt, foolish. I’m not putting the G85 down, but there are so many improvements in the 95. The “Devil is indeed , in the Details!” For more action and stills oriented shooting, the G9 has an edge, and is arguably superior to the other models. It is the better “buy,” if on sale, or bought used. However, it is bigger, and takes away from the appeal and concept of M4/3 cameras being more portable, smaller, etc. As always, YMMV Make an informed decision, and just go out and take some freaking pictures! Happy Shooting! 👍✌

Can get a G80(85) for $325 and G90(95) for $550. Need it formost for recording, 1080 60f and 4k 30f, does the G85 have 4k 30f and is it possible to run it on a powerbank via an dummy battery? Does it get hot and turns off after some time or can i record for like 2+ hours without it turning off?

In the USA you get unlimited recording in 4K from what I have experienced. I only use battery grips, but I’m sure if you got a dummy battery and high enough power deliver power bank you would be good.

The image stabilization is miles apart, and so are the autofocus and exposure. The 25% difference in pixel count gives natural nondigital sharpness which is awesome. It is not worth an upgrade, but if you have neither definitely get the g95... Hi Nolan, your review makes sense in the US and in some other locations. However, if one's options are either G80 or G90 then ... since the G80 has a 30min recording limit while the G90 does not, for video that tilts the scales and the G90 is more of an "upgrade" from a G80 than a G95 is an upgrade from a G85. If I am patient enough... maybe in a few years time when a G10, successor to the G9, is released Panasonic might offer a successor to the G95/90 still with unlimited recording time but 422 10bit, no sensor crop when filming and the same size and format than the G90/95. I have held the GH5 in my hand in a store and while I might get used to it...it just feels too big particularly the times when not shooting video. - Greetings from Europe.
