Join me in a repair project for my 30 year-old Cross Country Ski Machine, replacing a worn out drive roller.
This is the link I used on Amazon to purchase the roller. Although it shows as "red" in color, the one I received is black, as you will see. Anyway, this is the link: www.amazon.com/NordicTrack-Fi...

Thanks for this video, now I know what to do if this happens to my 1996 25th Anniversary model. It’s like the Pro but darker stained wood and it doesn’t have the adjustable incline. I still love it just like I did when I bought it at a NordicTrack store nearly 30 years ago! One of the best investments I’ve ever made. Something about using it is more ‘interesting’ than other types of aerobic machines. That’s all I’ve been able to come up with as to why I still enjoy it (besides the very low impact). Thank goodness I bought the clear plastic reading accessory, I watch documentaries and interviews on a tablet while I’m using it. I doubt that I’d be nearly as disciplined about exercising without that. It’s a pretty simple machine but the creator was really a genius.

I can't say that I have had that problem. I don't have the original instruction book but could there be a place to lubricate the flywheel? I assume that the squeaking is constant and not related to the drive rollers. Best of luck. They are great machines.

My machine was squeaking too. At first it was even hard to tell where it was coming from. In my case, I could solve it just by applying some 3-in-1 oil to both pins of each of the idle rollers at the front and back of the machine.
@gerry7725

I had a similar issue with the left roller. It seemed like the rachet mechanism inside the roller was catching and not releasing so there was zero resistance when pushing back. I tried Liquid Wrench Penetrating oil. The thin tube on the can allowed me to deliver a little oil to the end of the bearing. Oil, let it soak in, spin and wiggle the roller, then repeat several times to both ends of the roller. After cleaning the rubber roller with alcohol, it now seems to be working great. Unsure how long it will last but since the roller is out-of-stock on Amazon it might be worth a try.

Gerry, Hi! This is a strange one to me. With zero resistance when pushing back, if I understood you correctly, it almost sounded that the roller was in backwards. Please help me to understand. Thanks, Johnny
@gerry7725
@gerry7725 Жыл бұрын
@@speedsterjohnny7191 When the roller is working properly there is no resistance when the ski is sliding forward. There is resistance when you slide the ski back towards the rear of the machine. At that point the roller is engaged with the flywheel which is restrained by the friction belt. When the roller failed there was no resistance in either direction. The result can be surprising - you expect to have resistance when moving the ski backwards. I never removed the roller to lubricate it. I just tipped the entire unit on one side and then the other to apply the liquid wrench to both ends of the roller.

Thanks so much for this great video! I have a NordicTrack Pro from the late 80's and the skis clack clack clack whilst I try to use it, it use to just go whoosh whoosh (very softly) and it has a hurky jerky motion. Not a safe feeling at all, I am wondering if I should replace all 6 rollers or just the two on the fly wheel. I have turned the smaller fore and aft rollers and they turn forward and backwards okay, also the fly wheel rollers roll freely forward and stop when I attempt to roll them backwards so what should I do about the clack clack clack and the turkey jerky motion. I don’t think the “clack clacking” is anything to be concerned about. I find that I sometimes get that depending on how my feet exert pressure laterally. Try experimenting by exerting inward and outward pressure as you stride. Hope that helps and thanks for watching!

Thanks for the vid! How did you know for sure that the drive wheel needed to be replaced? We suspect ours needs replacing because the machine works fine on lower resistances, then on 4, the flywheel just stops. There seems to be not enough friction on the drive wheel at that resistance. Do you think we need to replace the drive wheel to fix this?
@speedsterjohnny7191
@speedsterjohnny7191 2 жыл бұрын
The drive roller provides the "traction" when you stride. Mine started to slip and I tried to use a lower resistance setting and that helped a little but it was clear that something was wrong. I did some snooping around and discovered that as the drive rollers wear out that this slipping can happen and it becomes progressively worse. It was only on the left side (so far) since my left is dominant. After over 30 years of service and however long my co-worker (the original owner) owned it, It was a small price to pay to repair it. I also have a spare for the right side if and when that one goes bad. As far as certainty, this was the only thing that made sense and it proved to be true, obviously. This is out of my realm of experience. First of all, I am assuming you have not taken the machine apart and reassembled it incorrectly, OK? Try taking all tension off the machine (nylon strap) and take the flywheel in your hand and move it back and forth. It should turn freely in both directions. If not, take it out and check for corrosion. Check each roller function by pressing down slightly on the ski and move it back and forth; It should turn the flywheel on the back stroke and roll freely when moving the ski forward. If they work in both directions, the rollers are good. The independent supplier I used may be out of stock or perhaps even not able to get the rollers anymore. If so, they may be available directly from NordicTrak. If so, be prepared to spend substantially more for them.

@@bodeans59 I looked up the Achiever on ebay and noted some differences between your machine and mine. On the Pro, the tension on the flywheel is controlled by a slide on the upright and there is a separate adjustment for the handles that you grasp with your hands. @@bodeans59 I looked up the Achiever, and while similar to the Pro, it appears that the tension for the skis is set by an adjuster located in between the skis. I could not find a video or any information indicating how to calibrate that control but there must be one. Do you have an owner's manual? If not, they may be available online. Hope this helps.
