One of the superstars of the museum collection. This museum has so many incredible aircraft and exhibits that a week isn't enought time to see, read and reflect on the incredible aviation history it represents.

The museum will never let you in the B-70 cockpit I'm afraid, you would need authorization from God! On the museum's website, look for cockpit 360 photo section.

One thing about that cockpit layout, where is the WCP (weapons control panel)? That's the control panel that controls the weapons bay operation, the setting of bomb configuration, i.e. fuses, weapon settings, release order/rate or release, etc. where is that located? Center console, further back? Up high between the pilots? I'm an ex-USAF weapons guy, and I was just wondering. I was there 2 years ago, and I would have given anything to get in there, and see the cockpit. But seeing my old bird, the F-111F from RAF Lakenheath was good enough for me. I am well familiar with that aircraft. Took it to Desert Storm in 1990-91.

Probably none on this airplane. The aircraft actually built were intended for research, not to develope a weapons platform. There had been momentum to build a 3rd plane as a YB-70, that would have been intended as a bomber prototype, but that never happened.

With the visor up, do the pilots have any forward view at all, or is it expected that they will be entirely on instruments?

@@ShinVega those weren't prototypes. They were built as research aircraft years after the plane had been canceled as a weapons system. They were not tested as bombers and never carried weapons for demonstration. These were no different than any X planes.

I wonder why we cant build anything like this any more, except the B-2 which is the only truly American genius plane we have now. Hope GEN 6 fighters are better than the F-35 and the F-22. $1TRILLION was wasted on the F-35. Too bad we can't reincarnate Kelly Johnson ffrom the LOCKHEED SKUNKWORKS fame, he was the best of the best.

We could build aircraft like this if we wanted to. We've been building great airplanes for years, and also disappointing ones. But almkstvall have been horribly expensive. If we had put this plane into production, the costs would have made it the F35 of its day.

@Stanley Jedrzejczyk It just wasn't needed. By that time we had decided to rely on ICBMs. We never ended up using those, either, but they had the task covered.

@Stanley Jedrzejczyk I understand that, and we ended up using B52s for ages to keep only a few of those advantages. However, at the time, that's why the Valkyrie was scrapped. Sad.
