I think you're on to something. In the "old days" you'd only see this rarely. Usually in the form of a television show doing "Man on the street" interviews asking general knowledge questions of passerby. The advent of the Internet has helped reveal just how widespread this lack of basic knowledge and life skills really is and probably always was. If there's a silver lining, it's that the problem has now been identified. Whether or not it can be fixed remains to be seen.

To the contrary, I don't think it's a new problem; merely one exposed through the advent of the Internet. The miracle (and possible ray of hope) is, despite this being the norm, society has somehow managed to limp along semi-functionally. There's a great quote by Dr. Jordan Peterson where he says he's amazed every day he wakes up and steps outside his front door that everything isn't on fire with riots in the streets. That it's a miracle the lights are still on.

I used to teach geology 101 labs, and we saw this all the time when teaching topographic maps. A lot of folks had the hardest time understanding that North does not equate to "up" or, perhaps more importantly, higher in elevation. I have a terrible sense of direction. My husband used to think that I was lying and did know whether to go right or left at the stop sign kind of bad. However, if you put me in the woods, on foot, I can always find north and get back out. My family taught me to look for the sun and if it isn’t there look at the trees to find north. Maybe she didn’t play outside enough as a child?

While I completely understand the concept of the static direction of the points of the compass I myself have no internal compass. My Dad can tell me which direction we are pointing in to almost 100% accuracy whereas if I spin round on the spot I may forget 😂. I’m not as daft to think that whatever way I’m pointing is north but I really wish I knew without a compass!
@JohnDoe-zl6qw
@JohnDoe-zl6qw 8 ай бұрын
Some research indicates it's innate, like a 6th sense. I don't mean that in the woo-woo, pseudo-science, metaphysical kind of way. I mean it in hard science, empirical studies done on migratory birds and fish kind of way. That there are anatomical and physiological "compasses" built into the brains of these species. I think it's also true of humans, though we have yet to identify its locus. I, like your father, couldn't get lost if I tried. I always know my cardinal directions, even if you were to spin me around while blindfolded. I can walk through a wilderness I've never been in before and find my way back without a map, even if I don't backtrack along my outbound route. I have a photographic image in my head of every tree, and rock, and stream I've walked past; a complete 3D map projected in my mind of my surroundings. And not just for that moment, or a day, or a week, but for a lifetime; everywhere I've ever been. Yet it's so "normal" for me, I assumed everyone was capable of the same when I was a child. Exercising the skill improves it, but it's something I've had since I was a little kid before learning about compasses and orienteering. It's such that I don't even carry a compass because what's the point? It's just dead weight for me. So it's definitely innate. And - woke political-correctness and accusations of sexism notwithstanding - it's been my experience it's more prevalent in males than females. Which isn't to say every male possesses it, either. My own father prides himself on his orienteering skills. And rightly so; with a map and compass he can find a needle in a haystack. Deprive him of these, though, and he's lost. So his skill is a learned one relying on external tools, while mine is an innate one I was born with. I could not imagine what my life would be like without this ability of knowing exactly where I am in the world at all times and possessing that internal map of all the places I've ever visited. If I were to lose this ability it would be as devastating to me as losing another sense, like hearing or sight.

Hear me out, in orienteering, the quickest way to get started is to take out you map and orientate your body to face North(with a compass) so when looking at the map it is in the correct position. So North will always be straight ahead and West is to your left. Just got to double check the orientation on the map also.

So, hear me out. I know that north is a geographical concept. When I am home, I know that directly north of me is Norfolk, Virginia, the Chesapeake Bay, and then Delaware. “Northern Virginia” is actually northwest from here. But sitting on my couch, I cannot point north. I’m not one of the many people blessed with some sort of internal compass or magnetic draw to north. Whatever it is that people, like my husband, can always tell where north is no matter where he is standing. I envy those people. 😢 I ask my husband how he knows and he says, “I don’t know. I just KNOW.” 🤷🏼‍♀️

yeah....kinda hard to explain indeed but ill try...for me it was knowing where is north from home to begin with...then judge all other places in relation to home and where home is facing...its kinda like we have an internal thing that calculates that for us...also we are awesome at reading a map...and we also ''register'' the north side of some buildings randomly in our heads kinda like landmarks to help us ''keep north'' basically......some of us also know the hour of the day in relation to the sun....that one i have really no idea how we do it its like its just a feeling

Why would anyone living in a city even need to know where north is? Your navigation tells you to go right or left, directions are given the same way. And when that doesn't suffice, we use streetnames. To genZ, knowing where north is is just as useful as knowing how to use a rotary phone.

As an almost 50 year old woman who is directionally challenged, I get it. I know it's wrong, but North is always dead straight ahead. I also have trouble with left and right. To be fair though I've always felt that this is one area where men and women are different. Men seem to have an innate sense of direction where a lot of women don't, much like a man's ability to tell the difference between two makes of cars even though when I look at them they look exactly the same because they're the same shape and color.😂
