This video came from my stream on May 13th, 2022. Catch me live every weekday from 9AM-2PM PT here: / northernlion
Shotgun Chess is GENUINELY a cool game that also happens to frustrate me a lot, which is my own cross to bear. It's a bit like chess meets XCOM meets Into the Breach, and it shows. Check it out!

@lucianoariasduval
@lucianoariasduval 2 жыл бұрын
@@Bongyes might be wrong, but there seem to be certain rules: the white king always starts on e1, d1 is always occupied by the queen, unless there is none, in which case a rook takes its place. If there's a second queen, it always starts on the other side of the king - on f1. I'm not so sure about how bishops and rooks work, I haven't payed enough attention, but knights seem to have the lowest priority, since when the back rank is filled up with pieces they start showing up in the second rank. In any case, you always start in front of the opponent's queen or rook. He should've known better, but as a chess player it feels really weird. Edit: I actually bought the game yesterday and within 4 hours of play time I beat every difficulty level except for the last one, which seems nigh impossible of you don't take it slow. The only difference between "very hard" and "king" difficulty is that they add an extra bishop and pawn at the start. Doesn't sound that bad, but "very hard" already has you fighting an extra knight and pawn, 1 starting shotgun shell, less ammo and no soul slots, so it's already pretty tight. On top of all that, King mode allegedly doubles the boss' health too, which I've yet to see. What I've come to realise, though, is that, as I initially suspected, queens spawn as close to e1 as possible with a bias towards the queenside (d1-a1), followed by rooks, then bishops and finally knights. When the back rank is full, they start taking the second rank with the same rules, staying as close as possible to e2. I almost wish the rooks had a bias towards a1 and h1, and as further rooks get added to the white king's army they would take g1, b1, f1 and so on to further resemble a chess board.

I feel like he limits himself so much by holding onto his soul cards too long. You can move around the board and not let enemy pieces pile up to trap you by using them proactively instead of saving them for when you've got no other options. There's no reason to hold onto them and only move one square when you get a new one after every kill
@JimJamTheAdmin
@JimJamTheAdmin 2 жыл бұрын
There are only two usecases I can see for holding on to them. The card that free turns them so you can chain soul cards or the unfaithful steed/additional soul slots combo that allows up to 3 additional movement per horse card by jealousy guarding them and only using them when you can immediately replace it with another knight soul. I have done both builds to varying success and I will say the Knight soul card builds slap but you have to consider if you might not just be better suited doing stuff that guaranteed additional damage and range.

took me about 5 or 6 tries for my first win. a few key things to look for that are super helpful -do NOT upgrade the enemy pawns unless you have to -weaken rooks, king, or both preferably -always take extra turn after soul use(extra souls with this, even better) -always take the respawn I know alot of that is RNG but there are certain things to avoid like the plague. like adding a bunch of pieces, they may be easier to kill but with so many on the board you get mated to easily weakening the queen(s) to 3 spaces is also amazing or 1 space for first 15 turns but that can catch u off guard. rooks are more annoying imo anyway as it is easy to let a bunch pile up on the board they are hard to kill by default

"the better you are at chess, the more you're held back" I think that's true for a lot of things in life, but maybe not this particular game

For as much shit as we give this man in the chat, he was pretty damn good. Got the game and laughed my ass off making every mistake in this video at least as often. xD

I for one love watching NL play this game and I like the content. Chat's backseating is doing more stress damage to NL than the actual game is, and while entertaining I wouldn't mind seeing how NL approaches this in a vacuum without them.

I can't believe NL found the only game where he could get backseated harder than actual chess

In the past, I had an Atari ST FM. On that system I used to play an absolute classic game called 'Battlechess'. The pieces would all have their own individual weapons. And each piece had their own intricacies and mannerisms. It was brilliant, and much better than this game here. I wish they would bring 'Battlechess' back.

Chat was bad but NL was only marginally better. The bit where he went off on chat for queens not being able to die only to forget himself they could only move 3 spaces even with chat telling him that and him reading it out multiple times was priceless.
