Amazing how we have become so used to constant noise in our lives, that we feel a need for it when on a trip like this. Great video, thanks for sharing.

Great video. I have spent countless hours paddling KPP, some tandem, some solo. One of my favourite places in Ontario. Heading back in May.

Thank you Larry! I didn't know if I had what it takes to do a solo trip but I really enjoyed it. At the end of the day I still prefer to go with friends to share the experience with them. Cheers!

Hey Alex, Just found this video - it is the exact trip that I did in fall 2015 with my sister...even stayed on the same sites you did. We did a loop to Gail Lake and back...a great adventure! TY!

Murray lake was beautiful, and it would have been easy to portage our tandem up to paddle on it, but the day was late, and as it turned out we needed to turn around in order to dodge wind and waves and reach Camp Widgwa before dark.

Regarding Charlton Lake, that and a lot of other peripheral lakes around Killarney have been raised by dams, maybe because of old logging and recently because damming filled creeks like Charleton to make them navigable. This is discussed in my blog. The dead trees you saw may be a result of lake raising.

Thanks, loved your videos! You know all this stuff (watching your latest stuff including your Wabakini trip) and this isn't meant to be any criticism at all, just a few observations and comments for your viewership based on this video: 1) Kudos - for batoning wood with your knife. Looked like a Becker Knife & Tool? This is so much lighter than taking a mid size (boys) axe and for a personal fire, a stout knife and pocket saw are all that you need. This will save you 4 lbs. Your choice was great here! 2) Mountain house dehydrated meals - they are convenient and great (my wife and I prefer to dehydrate our own), but on longer trips, I find that weight savings are better had by cutting open the foil bags they come in and putting them in ziplocks. Heat with a titantium pot. One titanium pot weighs less than 3 mountain house containers. So there is a diminishing returns on this one. 3) Wine - love that stuff, what a great choice for the woods! But, if I were doing those port's, I'd be packing some 40% rum and mio drops. Heck, though, we all have our luxuries and preferences. Thank you again so much for sharing your trips and experiences. I enjoy them so much. I've done all the eastern part of Killarney and a good chunk of the northern areas but haven't done the Nellie loop to the west yet. You have me intrigued and thinking of exploring it. Keep up the great work and keep those strokes clean (you have such excellent technique!). Ken

Thank you so much for taking the time to put this together and share it. Very helpful for trip planning. Did you have to pay Widgawa Outfitters for the use of their dock? Did you have to check in at the George Lake office?

I did pay Widgawa for use of their dock and they also have permits so no need to stop at George Lake

😭😭 no one planned you a party so you had to camp alone! 😭😭 I've done a lot of alone time in the woods. Nothing better much of the time, but not always. I think it was a great way to spend a bday. Get a little reflection, and time with yourself. It's surprising what you can learn about the person you think you know best.

Often slept in our cars. You only wear your life jacket during portages? I occasionally let my wife do without, but when it got windy and wavy on the way back from Murray Lake, we both had them on. www.songofthepaddle.co.uk/forum/showthread.php/40090-Killarney-From-the-Backside-and-Other-Views

@@NorthernScavenger Thanks for the reply! I looked at booking a spot on Grace Lake and realized it's all booked up for my vacation time off so we planned a different trip near Temagami instead this year. Next year we'll be doing this route to Grace Lake though. I know this video is 6 years old, but just a heads up - the new owners of the lodge you took off from said they've been working on new routes that lead to spots that are on Crown Land so they can offer more camping spots rather than just the paid for sites.

Oh please do learn to do a J-stroke.... it will help you immensely as well as repairing your damaged canoe-cred.
@NorthernScavenger
@NorthernScavenger 5 жыл бұрын
Haha at this time this was all I liked to do for a "J-stroke", this one is known as the pry. I now use the conventional J-stroke in turn with this one just to keep things fresh. Also the pry is much more effective when paddling whitewater. Thanks for watching!
@garydebacher9870
@garydebacher9870 5 жыл бұрын
Actually, hardly anyone knows how to do a j-stroke properly. And probably you don't either. Try watching Bob Foote's video on the forward stroke for solo canoeing. For tandem, a pure j-stroke isn't as effective in opposing the bow paddler as is a pry, and extraction of the pry is cleaner than can be done with the j-stroke. For solo, I kneel in the middle and only have to do a bit of a J every 5 or 10 strokes. I can start from a dead stop and run straight without a J or a pry stroke.
