I don't care what anyone else says; I still love "The Wizard". Yes, some moments are pretty corny...but its not the "prolonged Nintendo commercial" folks have been made to believe. That aspect of the movie is mostly just a backdrop; the actual story is a genuinely emotional one. Hayley and Cory use the Video Armageddon competition to prove Jimmy doesn't belong in a psych ward...but Jimmy's desire is for simple closure about a personal tragedy.

@@JoeyMartz Yep; I've been a fan of this movie since the early '90s when it first aired on TV. The video game aspect of the film is cool, especially for us retro types who actually grew up in that decade...but the actual point of the story revolves around family. You have Sam and his oldest son Nick, who can barely speak to each other without arguing. Cory is the middle child, who has empathy for Jimmy but doesn't know how to channel it very well. And then you have the outsider Hayley, who sees this whole adventure as a chance to reconnect with her own father, who we never see but he's mentioned a few times. Jimmy's stepfather is an opportunistic weasel, who even Nick recognizes as a jerk...but it all pales in comparison to the completely off-the-rails Putnam, who makes his living by retrieving runaways and is sleazy to boot.

Speaking of Malcom in the Middle, I remember an episode where Huey was watching TV and an ad for a tickle-me-Elmo knock off came on TV, and it was like "BUY ME AND YOUR SIBLINGS WILL PLAY WITH YOU AND HANG OUT WITH YOU! YOUR PARENTS WILL THINK YOU'RE THEIR FAVORITE!" and stuff like that. I don't know why that particular scene came to mind, it's just one that really stuck with me I guess. :\

I was 6 years old when this movie came out. At the time I thought it was awesome, and today I still do. I have it on DVD and I've probably watched it upwards of 30+ times. Is the script good? Not really. Are some of the characters over the top? Of course. Is it a commercial? What kids film isn't? I like it for what it is. As a kid I was like 'oh cool these kids get to go across the country having adventures and playing video games.' There were times I wished my dad was as much into video games as Beau Bridge's character was, or that I could be part of that game tournament. My favorite scenes have to be the ones with Sam trashing Putnam's car. On top of this the soundtrack is great. Real Life, the BoDeans, Paul Carrack and more, topped off the film well. This movie introduced me to the song Send Me An Angel which to this day is one of my favorites. The other day I heard a cover by The Megas on KZfaq, and they spliced in clips from The Wizard. If it wasn't like reviews like these I wouldn't have noticed Tobey Maguire playing one of Lucas' friends. A treasured film from my youth that will stay with me forever.

I'm just hoping that the Warcraft movie will be good. I don't even play the games but I just seriously want this 'videogame movies always suck' curse to end. I mean, how fucking hard is it to make a good movie out of a good game? We can make movies out of tv shows, comics and novels, so why are video games so hard to adapt?

Never had video games as a kid, only my friends did. Nintendo was everywhere, so I never saw this movie as a commercial, I just saw it as having stuff that was big at the time in it, cultural relevancy or whatever. But as a non-gamer, it worked far better as an ad for Universal Studios to me, as the main thing that stuck with me was the appearance of King Kong and Frankenstein while they were there. Impressed a desire to go there that's never been fulfilled. Oh, and I remembered the breast stuff because I was a pervy little kid.

This movie defines "brilliantly bad". It's so terrible yet still so watchable... just watching this video is making me want to waste another 90 minutes of my life watching the movie again. I remember asking "Santa Claus" for Mario 3, because I knew that with all his magic he could bring me the game before it was out, haha! Man, what a trip it would've been if my parents had actually got a hold of a Japanese copy of the game and an adapter to make it happen... I probably would've literally peed myself with joy.

I thought it was neat that the girl ended up becoming the lead singer of Rilo Kiley. The "he touched my breast" scene through me for a loop as a kid. I saw this on the Family Chanel when I was like 10ish, around the year 2000 without having any idea what it was about initially. I thought it was awesome as a kid because I grew up with NES and still had one in the basement although I hadn't played it for a while. As soon as the movie was over I had a a massive urge to get it out, hook it up and get playing SMB3.

Hell, I played games like crazy. Made older boys cry when I would kick their ass in Street Fighter.... XD I was 6. Also, I use to get challenges, like beating A Link To The Past on SNES WITHOUT dieing. So far, I beat all the Zelda games, (old console, like N64, GB, GBA, SNES, NES,) without dieing. XD I still have yet to complete that quest with the newer gen games. I also beat Ninja Gaiden 2 game... O.O HOLY HELL, TWAS HARD. The 3rd one just pisses me off! XD I also beat Metroid, of course the 3 Mario games, ect. I was ALL about games and comics when I was young, Wasn't really a girly girl... still not. I STILL have my NES. Hopefully, one of these days I'll post a vid. ^_^ GAME ON!

Come by and reminisce about the good ol' days. This is a poem I found about chicken tenders Solar7 Solar7 FINAL JUSTICE Date Posted: Feb 6, 2015 Advertisement Gimme gimme chicken tendies, Be they crispy or from Wendys. Spend my hard-earned good-boy points, on Kid's Meal ball pit burger joints. Mummy lifts me to the car, To find me tendies near and far. Enjoy my tasty tendie treats, in comfy big boy booster seats. McDonald's, Hardee's, Popeye's, Cane's, But of my tendies none remains. She tries to make me take a nappy, But sleeping doesn't make me happy. Tendies are the only food, That puts me in the napping mood. I'll scream and shout and make a fuss, I'll scratch, I'll bite, I'll even cuss! Tendies are my heart's desire, Fueled by raging, hungry fire. Mummy sobs and wails and cries, But tears aren't tendies, nugs or fries. My good-boy points were fairly earned, To buy the tendies that I've yearned. But there's no tendies on my plate! Did mummy think that I'd just ate? "TENDIES TENDIES GET THEM NOW, YOU FAT, UNGRATEFUL, SLUGGISH SOW!" I screech while hurling into her eyes, My foul-smell bowel-dwelling diaper surprise. For she who is un-pooped on is she who remembers: Never forget my chicken tenders.

Armando Antunez Thank you. I'm glad someone else acknowledge's that female gamers have always existed. Including myself and my girl friends (when we were little kids) who had Gameboy handheld consoles, the Atari 2600 they played "Kid Icarus" and "Kirby". My guy friends shared their Nintendo Power Magazines with me and introduced me to "Mortal Kombat". They made mix tapes (on Cassette) for me of CD based videogame soundtracks. It's a generational thing not a gender thing. If you are Generation X or Generation Y you grew up with this.

I'm sorry to see that the "That Guy with the Glasses" experience is over. No more British movie reviewers. No more comic book guy. Two music reviewers both gone. Lindsay Ellis. The only guy I can even find on the internet who got his start there is Angry Joe. But then he's been doing his own thing for a while now. Sorry to see your all that's left Doug. But then like I said, the whole thing really died when the TGWTG site shut down.,..

I always found that an issue with the Wizard as you said is the tone conflict, but in a way that wasn't actually unique to it. Keep in mind other "Kids" films from the 80s and early 90s... they'd be lucky to get a 15+ rating today, as so many didn't exactly treat us like idiots when it came to subjects. I mean Goonies for example had that inbred guy that they befriend, the Explorers is all kinds of fucked up by todays standards (but sweet Jesus I /STILL/ love that movie), then there's that one with Cher, forget the name but she had that kid with the decease that caused his head to grow abnormally ... the whole movie is like "don't judge someone based on their outward appearance" motif to it, but then right at the end rather than a happy ending the guy dies. I mean that was a bleak and truly tear jerking movie, even as a kid. Think about it the only person really making "Good Feels Only" Movies was George Lucas, with things like Willow and An Ewok Adventure... yet even both of those had much darker and adult tones to them than a children's movie today. Watched the new Paddington recently right after Willow on Amazon On-Demand, and like that shift of one of the greats from the 80s compared to what is for todays standards a pretty decent (but silly) kids movie is just so jarring to a degree. Still the issue wasn't so much the tone clash as it was how serious it took everything. See looking back there was actually an incredibly movie in there, the problem was it was just at this time when movies were being "Dumbed Down" for Kids (see: Super Mario Bros, Mask, etc...) which sure sometimes it works, but in this case because the actual subject matter was fairly bloody grim (again trend from the 80s) balancing the two takes a massive amount of talent. We have a then very fresh, new director and writing team who clearly wanted to make a really good Movie... who are then given their big break to make basically a 120min advertisement for Nintendo. Kids going to see it was for the video games, when the actual story really wasn't about them; rather it's the "side aspect" like the Gambling in Rainman. So obviously as a Kids who was going BECAUSE of the games, you end up disappointed as it feels like this WTF story is getting in the way ... while for adults, that corporate cling to said advertising being painful and blatant pulls you out of an interesting story that isn't properly developed as well as it should've been. As such it's painful and bad as a movie, because of all these clashing aspects... yet at the same time it is a bit of a treasured classic that you are happy to sit down and watch because buried in there is a great story trying desperately to get out. It is a product of literally the times, which were changing. Thus it is trapped between the more adult tone of the 80s and more "Wacky / Cool" tone of the 90s. Hell it's no wonder Tim Burton OWNED the 90s, as that's his bloody sweet spot.
