Growing up I have always thought that when you fished during the winter, you would be fishing deep. However, over the years I have found that a large population of bass always stays shallow but you need to have the right ingredients in order to catch them! In this video I give you 3 keys to catching bass with a flipping stick in winter!
BassFishingHQ is dedicated to teaching people how to catch more and bigger bass. I will go over different bass fishing tips & techniques that will put more fish in the boat or on the shore. Whether you are just starting out or a seasoned tournament angler, my goal is to help you catch more bass.

Something a lot of people forget out up north is the underwater springs. In mid michigan I had caught a 22 lbs bag of smallmouth in 6 ft with ice still on majority of the lake. Right at the springs the water temps were ~40-45

As a fellow Michigan angler I can confirm that largemouth and smallmouth will bite through the ice, many times in less than 10ft of water.

This is so accurate. Bass don’t all go deep when it’s cold. In the CA Delta, we are flipping and punching in Dec and Jan and pulling out decent fish

I believe it has more to do with sun penetration in the winter as to why some stay shallow. Think like this. In the winter under a shade its 40 and cold. But if you move out in the sun its still 40 but you get that radiant heat feel from the sun. I really think im onto something here. Just like summer water temps might be 80 but under that mat it feels cooler. Its about feel. They are acclimated to the temps. They dont have air conditioning or heat so theyre not like us a very small change has more effect than it does on us.

Try to find rocks or structures that get a lot of sun near deeper water . Doesn’t guarantee a fish but itlll improve your chances ( I’m in eastern Massachusetts so I feel your pain )

I know you use the Bitsy bug but I wanted a little heavier hook so I got the bitsy flip jigs and they are awesome in cold water or when you need a smaller profile

In the winter near me they hangout near drop offs and deep holes then when the sun hits the water they creep up on a crank bait or some swim jigs and nail them I’ve even caught them in Michigan in December right at the boat ramp

Caught bass on a Rattle Trap in 4', in shallow bays and some hard bottom. They hold the heat, even around 40° water and on warmer days, they move up.

Upper Chesapeake Bay, I catch all my bass this time of year anywhere from 3 to 12 feet around certain docks I've found that hold fish like crazy. Dropshot, Bitsy Bug, Wacky Worm... One spot in particular is 3-5 feet only, no deep water nearby, but its the first dock coming out of a creek they live in the rest of the year.

What tackle boxes are you using? I keep looking for non-expensive boxes that allow for custom slots without having to cut the dividers.

in my Lake Erie tributary called the Black river in Ohio I was catching bass like until late fall! in 2 months I caught over 110 bass of all types. I got a deal on a kayak in August so I watched these videos and I went bass fishing almost every day until late November. I smashed them on a wacky worms in green pumpkin and black and blue flake until October when the water temps hit 60-50 and then I caught them on crankbaits in 1.5 shad colors and flukes and other shad style lures. My question is do the bass leave the river and go to Lake Erie in the winter? I am adding a drop shot to my arsenal now for next year but after 49 degrees I couldn't locate or catch a fish in the river. I think I couldn't get down to them?

Today is December 29th... And although I only caught two Bass at about 2 lb a piece... I caught them on a Tom Mann's baby 1minus, impossibly slowly rolled across the surface in 38° water... That was only 3 ft deep.

One thing I learned a long time ago is never pass over shallow water ( even up north ) there’s a population of fish that always seem to be shallow no matter if it’s middle of summer or middle of winter

Do you find that fish move to winter patterns/spots based mainly on water temp, or more on time of year and length of day? If water stays unseasonably warm will they still go to winter holes?
@BassFishingHQ
@BassFishingHQ 7 ай бұрын
I definitely think it’s a time of year/length of day thing. I have seen in the fall when they are in winter patterns even when the water temp is still fairly warm. I have also seen in the spring where the water temp is unseasonably cold but they are starting to push up

So if I was interested in buying a hat, would such hat guarantee me catching more than 1 fish a season? It's gotta be not having a hat like that, is why I suck at fishing. I have over the past couple of years watch your videos and I have gotten many of the same baits/lures, but no luck😢
@Oldbasshole

Only time on the water is going to help you catch fish . The videos and baits are tools to help but only time out fishing is going to improve your actual skills . Just keep casting and learn from each trip
