This is a review of the Redfish Clamp meter iDVM550. This is not only a clamp meter that can measure current safely with a clamp vs running current thru the meter, but it can also provide power quality measurements. It can provide power factor measurement and break that down in real power, apparent power, and reactive power components. And it can measure Harmonic Distortion. There is a free wireless app from Supco Techlink at measurequick.com that makes it easy to take remote readings.

Very nice meter! A little pricey for the hobbyist. At $275.00 - $300.00 . This is more aimed for the professional, Electrical Engineering & Electrician that absolutely needs safety. It really is a nice meter!👍🇺🇸

Thanks Ronnie! Yes, I would agree. It is inexpensive for the professional level meter for having these features, but for the hobbyist I'll show a more affordable route;) I'll have to do this soon to save some money before they buy this. If I were an HVAC guy, I'd love this meter.

This is very interesting! I was looking for a power and PF meter, this one is very affordable. I will look for it in Canada. It will probably be in a range of 800$ but even then it is cheaper than most other meter in the market and it reads harmonics, with the app, you can’t beat it! Tks for your video.

I’ve been looking to get the DVM550 as I work in HVAC, and I am highly interested in its ability to grab the Capacitor’s stats while under load. You can either grab the three measurements and do the math, or use the app and it’ll calculate for you on the fly. Not too mention its other functions & ability to link up with MeasureQuick! (as well as Supco’s own Redfish data app)

Hi Eddie, That’s a really helpful review, thank you. It’s an awesome meter, for sure. I had seen you use it on a few occasions. The power splitter is a nice touch, as is the app. I’ve seen you use the app on an amplifier test. How does the inrush measurement fair for small devices like an amp? Is it useful or would you stick to the oscilloscope clamp? Cheers, Mark
@KissAnalog
@KissAnalog 3 жыл бұрын
Thanks Mark! Scope probes will have wider bandwidth where this is good to maybe 2 kHz. It is great for amps at the input power and can be used at the load but test frequency should be kept lower.

I would be interested in measuring power supplies with a power factor correction stage and seeing how well they do. The PFC is a switching boost stage, resulting in a DC bus voltage higher than peak mains voltage, not directly related to power factor as we know it, but drawing power from more of the mains waveform than the usual bridge rectifier and bus cap.
@KissAnalog
@KissAnalog 3 жыл бұрын
Thanks for the feedback John! I'll be doing more of this as I go forward. Lots more SMPS stuff to come;) Here's a video on PFC, and then there's a part 2 as well. Also I did one with a GaN FET: kzfaq.info/get/bejne/p7aoZaaIppa7hH0.html

Hi there. How does the meter measure the wattage, VA, PF and Var in the circuit? Does it have internal inductors or ? Do you have a link you could suggest to explain this. Thanks very much Paul
@Paulrogbucksbeach

** I understand wattage. It can measure watts and calculate the power factor with VA. It's more the apparent power ? How does it measure VA in circuit.
@KissAnalog
@KissAnalog 3 жыл бұрын
I think what it does is measure the amplitude of each (probably with a notch filter to single out the fundamental freq.) and then look at the time difference. PF will be a function of both the time/phase between current and voltage, and distortion. I think this is also how it calculates capacitance by measuring current and voltage. If you look up the chips that this uses, the data sheets most likely will explain how they do this. Pretty darn cool!!

Yes H01 is 60Hz [H0x*60 or 50 Hz) than H02 is the 2nd Harmonic. Press the FUNC key again (short press) and enter the harmonic viewing screen Use the Hz% (UP) and REL (DOWN) keys to toggle between harmonics H01r = Total harmonic distortion r (relative to actual effective value) Ho1F = Total harmonic distortion F (relative to fundamental wave) LEAD = Leading phase angle / IND LAG = Lagging phase angle / CAP

Is there no fuses inside the meter incase you accidentally read voltage on the resistance setting ?
@KissAnalog
@KissAnalog Жыл бұрын
Great question! No, there's no need for fuses. This is a current clamp so no current through the meter. Reading Ohms is protected by large value high voltage resistors. So, no need for fuses. This is the safest way to read current. ;)

@@KissAnalog Hi, thanks. Not really. I have tried Amazon and some local shops, but to no avail. The usual brands, sure, Testo, Fluke, AMBEpro and some Chinese brands. But this specific or the Hioki I haven't found. Too bad, because they look quite capable and especially Inrush capacity on the DC is where you pay the big buck.

Hey Eddie. Very interesting meter. I was wondering if it had fuses...I didn't see any?
@KissAnalog
@KissAnalog 3 жыл бұрын
Thanks Steve! No, as it uses the clamp on (magnetic pick up) it doesn't need fuses. I think this is much safer when working around high energy. Also, the fuses in hand-held meters is generally limited to 10 Amps, and this has a 1000 Amp setting, as well as the 6/60 Amp setting. So, the protection built in is for voltage spikes, and it looked very impressive.

I’m a new subscriber. Really enjoying this. My first fluke was a 85 that I used almost 21 years on n almost daily basis. I should send it to get repaired. The ports that the leads plug into finally wouldn’t make good connection. I digress, is there any other clamp meter that has the same features as this does, I like many of the features this has, and haven’t really seen any others that have the capabilities this has, I think some of the Fieldpiece meters do, but that’s about it. The price doesn’t scare me too much I would use it for my business. I currently have a fluke 325 and 376FC that I use to work on 480v three phase motors on a coal crusher. Thanks for any info. Also been thinking of buying an oscilloscope, not sure why, but am interested in seeing more than what a meter shows. I’ve been watching your oscilloscope videos, going over different models at different price points. Thanks so much
