CLIP DESCRIPTION:
Betty (Sally Field) is yelled at and almost arrested for showing a small amount of hair outside her hair wrap.
FILM DESCRIPTION:
In this docudrama based on true events, a mid-'80s Michigan housewife finds her life turned upside down when a vacation to Tehran with her Iranian husband turns into virtual imprisonment for her and her young daughter. Betty Mahmoody (Sally Field) is reluctant to visit the wartorn homeland of her doctor husband, Moody (Alfred Molina). But, depressed about the racism of the American medical establishment and pining for contact with his family, Moody convinces her to join him for a two-week jaunt. The Islamic fundamentalism and strange customs of Iran bewilder and frighten Betty and her daughter, Mahtob (Sheila Rosenthal). But nothing prepares her for Moody's announcement that the family will be remaining in Tehran indefinitely. Despite beatings and more pervasive psychological control from her husband and his relatives, Betty makes it to the Swiss embassy (there is no American ambassador at the time). There, she learns that as the wife of an Iranian, she is now automatically considered a citizen and that she has absolutely no parental rights over Mahtob in this country. Betty then endures several years as a virtual prisoner, escaping only with the help of Westernized Iranian friends. Based on the book by the real-life Mahmoody and William Hoffer, Not Without My Daughter was coincidentally released during the long build-up to 1991's Gulf War.

I remember a female coworker of mine dated a Muslim man for several years. She said that he was very nice, smart, and handsome. He had a great job as a professor at a major university. She said that he told her he was a Muslim but not a practicing one. He said he didn’t believe in having women wear the hijab and never went to a mosque to pray or anything. Well five years pass and their relationship was getting serious, and my coworker said they were about to get engaged, move in together, the whole nine yards. Well she said that one day he asked her to start wearing a hijab. She said no because she was raised Christian and didn’t believe in it. She said she got into an argument about it but he reluctantly said he respected her wishes. Then a couple months later when they were discussing their relationship he said that he wanted her to convert to Islam and he wanted her to wear the hijab, go to Mosque, pray to Mecca, everything because he wanted their future children to be raised Muslim. She broke up with him shortly after.

One of my grad students was from Saudi Arabia where they're nuts about the dress code for women too. One day his wife went out on their front patio without her headgear on and the local gestapo happened to be driving by. She got arrested right then and there. Took him over 3 months to get her out of jail (he was terrified she would be killed in there). His family said "you need to go" so they came to Canada. He said to me proudly: "My wife has not worn hijab since we come to Canada!" They hate Islamic culture and have grown to love Canada and the freedom it's offered them. People like that I don't mind them coming here.

Brenna Ryan her story and book was full of shit and lies. I am Afghan and the Afghan and Iranian cultures are similar in a lot of ways and this movie is a incomplete and exaggeration of the Iranian culture. Don't forget the setting of this movie is in at least 1979 or the early 1980's a time when the Shah of Iran was overthrown and there was alot of anti-American sentiment in Iran and also alot of propaganda by the American government because they opposed the Iranian revolution. In this move they depicted Muslim Iranian men as hating Americans and them all beating their wives. This movie was completely biased because of American propaganda and doesn't truly reflect the Iranian culture, it's people or the religion of Islam. So do your research before you open your mouth and talk out of ur ass. You're basing your information on a completely biased movie and some idiot woman who was trying to get rich by really over exaggerating her life story during a time of extreme tension between two nations.

+Adam Tajyar Please don't lie, anyone can image-google "Iran before and after the islamic revolution" , the difference in women's dress code is sooooooo different. Before women were all free to show their hair and wear modern fashion but after the revolution the women are all covered in islamic robes ... Also, this movie is set in the mid 80s during the years under Ayatollah Khomeini, not 1979. Under the Ayatollah, anything that is western influenced is considered un-islamic and forbidden for example western music .. homosexuals were execute en masse. Its a well known fact that Khomeini hated western cultures a un-islamic and he is a deeply religious man ... Over the years after his death Iran may have become slightly less stringent with women showing a bit of hair under their head covers but most are still wearing head scarfs, just google "shopping in Iran" you will see the women still have their head and arms covered ... Thats the reality of it... I implore you to please stop lying .. you're a human, show some compassion for the suppressed people ..

88feji Whether or not they are "suppressed" is a matter of opinion..... It's hard to understand other cultures but different cultures have different standards of beauty. For example the women in Africa who put rings around their neck to make their neck really long or Pierce their lips with huge discs.... Or the Chinese women who bound their feet..... I sure as he'll wouldn't do that but I'm sure those women wouldn't have silicone put into their breats...... People shouldn't be FORCED but they live in the land where the Abrahamic religions originated..
@88feji
@88feji 5 жыл бұрын
+JusticeForTheSilenced Its a fact that some cultures are more oppressive than others ... you're being ignorant when you bring up the chinese culture of "bound foot" like its a culture still happening silly, its one of the most painful, most oppressive act on women in human history, try to google some images and tell me if you will not protest against this "culture" ... a lot of these women are forced to have their feet fractured and bound up since childhood... if you think a child can consent willingly to such horrible mangling of feet you're delusional .. such practice is no longer enforced on chinese women these days silly ... but its a horribly oppressive "culture" on women , you're really ignorant to talk about it like its a "good" culture to have ...cultures change ove time darling, some cultures disappear over time because its too inhumane, and rightly so ... so should many of the oppressive cultures within islamic society like face veils and full body covering .. Pls read on the history of foot binding, its was protested against and finally die out as a "culture" due to the protests against its inhumanity. Ask any chinese woman today if they think such culture should be allowed or if they find it desirable or if they think it should be prtoested against ... nobody in their right mind will allow such culture to exist in modern humane society. The thing is some women may embrace certain suppressive cultures imposed on them but thats due to the overall ignorance pervading throughout the society and the "honour" aspect preached by certain religious preachers or "morality" preachers in the society. Its such bad influencers in society who try to make such oppressive cultures seem "right", but educated people like us who can see how many of these women who are suffering by being forced or pressurised into it ... its our duty to speak up and protest against it .. The thing about oppression is how the society exerts an undue, suppressive requirement unfairly on one section of the society compared to other sections of society. You think only of some women on tv who say they like the "fashion" of islamic head and face covers, but you ignore to research on how in many parts of the world those islamic women who finds it uncomfortable to wear these things are forced or pressured to wear them against their will. I don't think you understand the word oppress or suppress ...

However, when I went to Morocco with a pal, it was pretty sketchy - at least in Casablanca (Marrakesh was much much better, felt way safer). I'd never been in a Muslim/Arab country before. Even though they're pretty progressive as far as Muslim/Arab countries are, it was still an odd experience being two single American girls. Many restaurants wouldn't serve us because we didn't have a male escort, or because our heads weren't covered. It's not required to have covered heads there, but they definitely didn't seem to keen on seeing our hair. This was Spring of 2012 so it may be different now.

As the Government came in to power after the U.S replaced the constitutional monarchy with a *TOTAL* monarchy around the Shi, And what i notched in my studies is that ever single time the U.S puts new sanctions on Iran the Iranian people support the government more and more. Thing is Sanctions can at the least cause discomfort for the people who live in that Country and at worse cause people to die, Let it be due to a lack of medicine for the sick or some Iranian not getting a type of brand of camera he wanted to buy from the west. Iran will never in our life time be a western ally of course. The reason why is because it’s a way of ensuring that the women are not loved for their looks rather then their personality, kindness, ect. And the men are covered they aren’t allowed to take off their shirt in public they must be respectful, all the same rules as the women. There’s even a chapter (?? I think that’s what it’s called in english) in the Quran where Allah subhanataala ensures that men and women are equal.
