CLIP DESCRIPTION:
Bernie (Hugh Bonneville) and Anna (Julia Roberts) make small talk about their professions. Bernie does not realize Anna is a successful actress.
FILM DESCRIPTION:
Can a beautiful and internationally famous American actress find happiness with a frumpy British bookstore clerk? She can -- at least for a while, it seems -- in Notting Hill. William Thacker (played by Hugh Grant) is a bookseller at a shop in the Notting Hill district in West London, who shares a house with an eccentric Welsh friend, Spike (Rhys Ifans). One day, William is minding the store when in strolls Anna Scott (Julia Roberts), a lovely and well-known actress from the United States who is in London working on a film. She buys a book from William, and she is polite and charming in the way a famous actress would be with a star-struck sales clerk. Their relationship would logically end there, if William didn't run out a few minutes later to buy some juice. While dashing back to the shop, he bumps into Anna on the street, spilling juice all over her blouse. Since he lives nearby, William politely offers to let her stop by his house to clean up; since William seems harmless enough, Anna agrees. When Anna has to stop back to pick up a bag she left at William's house, they kiss -- just in time for Spike to show up. A romance slowly blooms as his friends and family (not to mention the world at large) wonder out loud what he's doing dating a movie star. Notting Hill reunites Hugh Grant with producer Duncan Kenworthy and screenwriter Richard Curtis, who previously worked together on the international hit Four Weddings And A Funeral.

He simply didn't recognise her, he then treated her like everyone else. Senior bankers work very long hours and as a result can be oblivious of people who are in the spotlight. The only point i would make is senior bankers are not generally crass or nieve it would have been more realistic if he had spent the whole dinner party oblivious as to her being famous. The other issue being English he was just doing small talk and trying to find things they had in common just to keep the conversation going, it should be noted she didn't do any effort in that regard. In so much as the film was set in Notting Hill a number of bankers earn in excess of £15m a year and would have been unfazed by it anyway. However thats the film business.

When you ask someone their job, you can more or less gauge how much they earn (so you can also later act accordingly for example inviting them to a place both of you can afford), their principles (for example, if you’re talking to someone in the army, they value discipline or authority etc.), their habit and interests. I’m not saying you will have a perfect understanding of them but a general idea will keep the conversation going.

I think this film is so enjoyable because it feels the most realistic. Celebrities are normal people tool, they feel pain and love. They're just rich and famous. So this type of film is easily relatable

I gave an employee a good raise on her one year evaluation because she deserved it. I had only been in the supervisor position for a few weeks. She told another employee who had been working there longer, but wasn't making as much. That other employee went to human resources and complained. I was not in charge when that employee was given her last evaluation, so I don't know how her wage was decided. She had worked there longer, but wasn't as good as the one I gave the raise to. I was told to give the whiner a raise, and two other employees who were in a similar situation got raises as well. From my perspective, employees talking to each other about how much they make is a sure fire way to make them get lower increases on all of their future evaluations for acting like jerks. I probably would have given each of those employees increases that fit their skills and energy. Just ripping pages off of the calendar does not justify an increase in pay. I'd happily pay newer people more money if they were better employees.

@deezynar
@deezynar 3 жыл бұрын
@@Raison_d-etre I'm always impressed by people who can write, but can't read. How do you do that? I'd really love to know. Oh, you won't be able to read this, I'm just wasting my time asking you that. Maybe some time in the future you'll learn to read, and you'll read my first reply to you. If you do, you'll see that I was a great boss because I believed in paying generous wages to employees who did their job well. Folks like you live in a fantasy world where the boss is evil and all the employees are perfect little angels who get screwed. You've never seen employees who have to be prodded to do their job, but expect to get paid. You've never seen employees who do low quality work, or employees who intentionally break things. Employees start off as unemployed people. They see an ad for employment and come in to an interview saying they will be the best employee the company has ever had. They say that AFTER the salary and the job responsibilities have been explained to them. Then they start working and realize that the pay and the work are just like they were explained to them. Then they become unhappy and swear that they are getting screwed. Instead of finding a job that is better suited to them, they stick with the job they said they'd be great at, and they suck. They suck because they suck at everything. They don't get a better job because they are losers who are not qualified for a better job. So instead of doing a great job at the one they have, they screw their employer. And in response, their employer pays them the least they can, and hopes to replace them as soon as possible. But those who do a great job will often have a boss like me who gives them the maximum raise possible, even though that makes them higher paid than people who have been there longer, but worked under a different boss. I am guessing that you belong to a labor union that tells you how you are getting screwed by your employer in every monthly meeting. Good old unions - spreading dissatisfaction, ingratitude, and envy, everywhere they go. Unions also protect bad employees. Isn't that surprising. Unions are businesses that make money off of telling workers that businesses screw people. Meditate on that for a while. Businesses are typically not saints, but when you hear the salary, and what a job entails, it is on you to say, "No thanks" right then if that doesn't satisfy you. Only low-lifes take the job, cry about it, and do bad work. But, you won't understand any of that because you have a disability.

@jdrancho1864
@jdrancho1864 5 жыл бұрын
@@begobolehsjwjangan2359 Not actors specifically, just high earners (movie stars, recording artists, star athletes, corporate CEOs). A lot depends on the structure on how you receive the money (if a high pay-off is preceded by several years working towards it with no income, you used to be able to spread out taxes over those years, thus reducing taxes due for each individual year). This also assumes her being a California resident. Some US states have high personal income tax rates, others like Texas and Florida have none. That is why a lot of celebrity athletes maintain their main residence in these states. Bottom line, gross income is as meaningless a figure as the touted jackpot in a lottery. It may be a high number, but it only applies if the winnings are taken over time. Any immediate cash payout is greatly reduced, made even more so when taxes are deducted first. That, at least, is the situation in the USA. It probably varies greatly in your jurisdiction.

Might be good cinema but my wife and I saw the real thing at Deerfield, MA. Very crowded parents day. A waitress asked a family if they’d mind sharing the table with...Michael Douglas! She didn’t mention his name, and the family was very polite. While their school-age son sank into the floor, and we watched from the crowded bar, the father asked, “What do you do?” He said he “made movies”. They proceeded ask if they might’ve seen any. Fatal Attraction and Black Rain had come out maybe a month before. Never heard of them. Douglas looked around, caught our eyes at the bar and proceeded to roll his. Obliviousness exists.
