The Sinquefield Cup sees Magnus Carlsen and 11 more of the world's best players compete in the Saint Louis Chess Club from 17-28 August 2019. The event is the fifth leg of the 2019 Grand Chess Tour. In addition to tour points the prize fund is $325,000, with $90,000 for 1st place.
Players receive 130 minutes for the entire game, with a 30-second delay from move 1. A tie for first place will be decided in a 2-game rapid mini-match (10 min + 5 sec delay), in case of just two tied players, and if necessary an Armageddon game (5 vs. 4) on 29 August at 13:00 local time. 4:00 -- Black's other good option here (and one preferred by the engine all the way out to depth 30, when the played Rxg5 reaches parity) is Be7, which saves his knight thus: Be7, Qe1, then either Qxe1, Rxe1, (knight moves, and the the White g--pawn is doubly attacked), or Ng4+, Kg2, Qxe1, Rxe1, Nh6 (and the retreating knight cannot be taken because the pawn is pinned). 4:19 -- Qg6 is better than Qh4 here, as it avoids the queen-trade after Qh4, Qe1. (The Black queen will also be out of the x-ray of the a4 rook.) 5:22 -- Nxc5 in this position would be a game-losing blunder, as it is met by R6xd5, and White's rook-pair now have access to Black's rear. 5:42 -- Maxime captured the pawn too hastily, IMO, as a simple Kc6 threatens the White rook while preventing Rd7. This would gain him a tempo versus impending rook-infiltration (as, say, Rd8 as opposed to Rd7 doesn't immediately threaten anything, as giving him time to play f6, and if Rf8, then Bg5, and Black's fortress is unassailable while only White can really blunder). 6:22 -- MVL missed Ra7 as the better move, and Maxime can now more easily salvage a draw.

I think it is a better move, but only slightly, and probably not in a meaningful way. The main problem is that, yes, white could have eliminated the a-pawn (can do so with Rb7+, too instead of c4), but at the cost of the white c-pawn. The doubled e-pawns will end up on e5 and e3 protected by the bishop from f4, which will also protect the black h-pawn. I don't see any way white can crack that open and win with the lone h-pawn. The engines agree with me.
