Mike Calabro is here with a look at Guillermo del Toro’s lifelong obsession with humanoid fish creatures, and how ‘The Shape of Water’ is the culmination of del Toro’s decades-long dream.

The Shape of Water 2017 is shaping up to be one of Guillermo del Toro’s finest movies yet. But Guillermo del Toro The Shape of Water isn’t the director’s first attempt at an aquatic humanoid fish-man. There have been plenty of Guillermo del Toro monsters throughout the years, but he’s always had a fascination with the Creature from the Black Lagoon and it’s star, the gill-man. The gillman was a revolutionary step forward in special effects for 1954, and monster movies would never be the same. As a boy in Mexico, Guillermo del Toro couldn’t understand why the Creature from the Black Lagoon never ended up with the girl at the end. He wanted the monster to have a happy ending, but first he’d have to become one of cinema’s new masters of horror. He got his first chance with Hellboy, starring Doug Jones as a sentient merman named Abe Sapien. The state-of-the-art Abe Sapien makeup was ahead of its time, and it got even better for the sequel, Hellboy 2 The Golden Army, also by Guillermo del Toro. Doug Jones was the perfect actor to play Guillermo del Toro monsters, and not just because he fit into the suit. He brought real charisma and acting skill to every character he played, even the terrifying Pan’s Labyrinth Pale Man.
But now, David Harbour Hellboy 3 is no longer in Guillermo del Toro’s hands, and the Universal monsters Dark Universe looks dead in the water, so we’re probably not getting the Creature from the Black Lagoon remake anytime soon. So, like always, Guillermo del Toro carved his own path, and created a brand new monster for The Shape of Water: The asset. Also played by Doug Jones, the Asset is a different kind of fish monster, and he’s a perfect foil for the case of The Shape of Water. Doug Jones The Shape of Water, Sally Jenkins The Shape of Water, Michael Shannon The Shape of Water, and the rest of The Shape of Water cast are creating a modern fairy-tale set during the Cold War. The Asset Abe Sapien, the Asset Creature From the Black Lagoon, the Asset the Gill-man, none of them are the same creature. Guillermo del Toro Doug Jones brought a new take to the newly designed character, and while he might not be the Creature from the Black Lagoon that Guillermo del Toro is in love with, The Shape of Water the Asset is the next best thing.

I absolutely fell in LOVE with Abraham Sapien, the design of the character, the makeup, the detail, the characteristics, and the romance, that connected to the love label character. Me being a drawer, I am at this moment drawing Abe Sapien from Hellboy. We love you Abe and keep singing “I can’t smile without you”.

The concept of humans being in love with someone who isn't human is a concept that has been in many different movies, shows, comics and games as well as in folklore as there are stories about animal-girl brides. Del Toro was offered to do a Gill-Man movie for the Dark Universe but after the failure of the Mummy (2017) this never came to be. Del Toro obviously was influenced by the character of the Gill-Man and the character of Abe Sapien is another one too.

Because Del Toro is interested in the unknown and seeing as man has only discovered 6% of the sea, the rest is left to the imagination of what's truly in the deep sea. But Del Toro has the special afinity for monsters and looking at Pacific Rim, with the Kaijus being from the centre of the universe, the sea is a perfect choice. Abe Sapien though is awesome 😁

Guillermo del Toro has on numerous occations explained that he wants to create a lovecraftian movie worthy of said Lovecraft, so it doesnt become a blooper like so many other lovecraft movies* that usually are just "inspired", besides his favorite lovecraft story is just "The shadow over innsmouth" so ofc, he wants to make one that can be remembered as a masterpiece and not junk! :) *There are plenty of Lovecraft movies out there, with The Resurrected from 1992 the most storylike (The Case of Charles Dexter Ward) then there are: Cthulhu 2010 (has nothing to do with cthulhu at all really) Bleeders (Hemoglobin) 1997 The Lurking Fear 1994 (Sad adaptation) The Curse 1 + 2 etc etc etc...

Del Toro reuses themes all the time. The reaper strain vamps from Balde II are very similar to his vamp designs for the Strain. The Tooth fairies from Hellboy II are very similar in concept to the creatures from Don't be afraid of the dark. The royalty aesthetic and dynamic for the Fae from Hellboy II (again) is also very similar to the Fae Royalty from Pan's Labyrinth. Chronos and both Hellboys (again) share the whole living clockwork theme. He was clearly interested in exploring a mixed race love interest with Abe and Princess Nuada in Hellboy II (again), so it's no real surprise he'd go on to explore that in its own film sometime later. Del Toro seems to just get themes locked in his head and often revisits them with his own movies if he doesn't feel like he explored it enough in the other IP's that weren't specifically about that one theme.

I think the biggest mistake was doing PG-13 action fests instead of gory R-rated dramas. Again, they did the Dark Universe to cash in on MCU, so they try to keep it accessible for the whole family. Bleh. But hey, with the success of Deadpool, Logan and the new IT, maybe R-rated blockbusters may come back. God damn it, once almost all action films were rated R.

That's exactly what I thought! If they would have given the entire project to a person who genuinely loves and understands monsters they'd be siting in a huge award winning pile of cash right now. Instead, they decided to have focus groups and board meetings call all the shots on . Way to shoot themselves in the foot.

Actually, Zennim, portrayal of stuff from the sea as evil, distasteful, frightening, etc. is an extremely ancient tradition & can be found in almost all cultures that had access to the sea. An ocean or sea is the ultimate wilderness: places which have all traditionally been seen as places not for humans & inherently antagonistic to us. The sea is the ultimate place on Earth in which humans & humanity do not belong... & even more than a forest or a desert, the sea conceals its contents very well. Miles & miles of blackness are beneath you when you're out on the open water, & who knows what might be down there? That's why Lovecraft gives reference to this ancient tradition of fearing the sea & its creatures in his writing. For instance, one of his great fishy gods is Dagon. This is a name pulled right from the Bible. Dagon was the head of the Philistine pantheon (a people who are unilaterally vilified in the Bible); a fishy god of the sea.

According to Abe's backstory he was found in a water-filled capsule in a basement in 1978 while this movie takes place in the early 1960's. Even though the date April 14th 1865 was written on Abe's tank it isn't confirmed that date has any real significance to him exactly (As in a birth-date or something like that). Meaning that Ape could have been at most 18 when they found him if he was conceived in Shape of Water

We are fully aware of that. And I think Guillermo is also fully aware of that and fully aware that his fans will speculate. Guillermo might be making a not so subtle but completely legal nod to a connection. Also, we are just having fun so lighten up dude!
@Cernunnnos
@Cernunnnos 6 жыл бұрын
PersonaX it's very likely that Del Toro would make an unofficial prequel and just leave it up to the fans to make the connection. That's well within his wheel house, both legally and mentally. *spoiler* It's never explicitly stated in the film that the two would have or even be able to have kids. It's not even clear is she actually survives at the end or if that was simply the guy's hope being played out in front of us. But it's certainly possible those two could conceive a child and that child could be the Del Toro Verse Abe. The timeline fits.

This is amazing. I had to wait until I was 78 years old to even know who Guillermo del Toro is. I had no association with Hellboy, passing it off as comic book stuff, and, therefore, was totally ignorant of Hellboy and any other Guillermo del Toro film. It was only the shape of water that caught my attention, my mind, and my heart. Of course, once this happened, I decided I knew the shape of water and, , Philly Sam's all there was to know about del Toro. How silly, but I apologize to Mr Del Toro and all of his fans who were clearly knowledgeable, but until last few days of seeing these channels on KZfaq such as yours, I had no idea exactly how ignorant I am. Anything I commented on 24 hours or so before this, please accept my apologies from a very senior woman's narrow range of vision in this specific genre, and thank you Mr Del Toro and you also.

You say "the studio" didn't want it known that Patrick designed the Creature, but in addition to being not exactly true (I'll get back to that), let's not be afraid to name names. It was Bud Westmore, head of Universal's makeup department at the time and known egomaniac, who deliberately conspired to keep Millicent Patrick and her contributions buried by history. In fact (getting back to the first point) Universal actually DID want to market Patrick as the Creature's designer. They proposed a publicity tour with her titled "The Beauty Who Created the Beast" but of course, Westmore wasn't having it. They changed the title partway through to "The Beauty Who Lives With the Beast" yet even still, Westmore's jealousy was so great that he got Patrick fired upon her return from the press tour.

and yet they wont get him to do the creature dark universe.. which is a shame because he'd probably fight for practical effects. I also expected more mention of Lovecraft in the video.

According to Doug Jones, when Del Toro first saw the Abe Sapien costume, he dropped to his knees and said: "You are so beautiful... and I am SO FAT"

No matter what I will be using this as my own imaginary abe sapien sequel anyway and I will just have to fill in the gaps myself.
