Raw unedited film clips of NYC's Third Ave Elevated Train (El) from 1955 by Ben Calvo, Head Photographer for Woman's Day Studio. There are three 400-ft 16-mm reels in the series - this is Reel #2.
The IRT Third Avenue Line, commonly known as the Third Avenue El and the Bronx El, was an elevated railway in Manhattan and the Bronx, New York City. Originally operated by the New York Elevated Railway, an independent railway company, it was acquired by the Interborough Rapid Transit Company (IRT) and eventually became part of the New York City subway system.
The first segment of the line, with service at most stations, opened from South Ferry to Grand Central Depot on August 26, 1878.
Service was extended to Harlem in Manhattan on December 30. Service in Manhattan was phased out in the early 1950s and closed completely on May 12, 1955, and ended in the Bronx on April 29, 1973.
The Third Avenue El was the last elevated line to operate in Manhattan, other than the 1 train on the IRT Broadway-Seventh Avenue Line (which has elevated sections between 122nd and 135th Streets and north of Dyckman Street), and was a frequent backdrop for movies. Service on the Second, Sixth and Ninth Avenue El lines was terminated in 1942, 1938, and 1940, respectively.

I grew up on Washington Ave and 168th street in the Bronx in the 1950s&1960s.The third ave el was one Block east. The rumbling sounds of those trains was in my blood. Used to take it up to the last stop on Gunhill Road. Used to take it down to the last stop on 149st third ave.As a child I took the El with my parents, grandparents and great grandparents. After arriving at Ellis Island in 1895 from the Danish West Indies,my paternal great grandmother and her two sisters all took their first train ride on the El from South Ferry up to 143rd st in the Bronx. To settle in with a sister of their recently deceased father. What memories. It felt so weird to walk up to third ave and not have those elevated tracks above my head.It felt so weird not to hear that rumbling sound anymore after 1973.I felt naked

Great memories, my dad would always let me go to the front car so I could look out the window.

Wonderful and astounding-- like you're really there. Obviously a work of love for the El.

Every so often, my father use to take me to my uncle who lived on E 119 St via 3 Ave "el." Wow! That was a long time ago.

My bedroom faces 3rd Avenue and reflecting the fact that an Elevated line ran through is fascination. I was born 5 years (1960) after the line in Manhattan was discontinued and removed on May 12, 1955

Uncolored, silent, powerfully moving documentary which speaks volumes within each creatively composed frame about a legendary New York City infrastructure that was needlessly destroyed by a few shortsighted and selfish individuals. At least the film maker had the foresight to document it for the future generations who may one day seek to emulate it for the betterment of our society.

To know that the Manhattan section of The 3rd Avenue El wouldn't exist by 1960, while its sister line in The Bronx would be in service till 1973....WOW! Meanwhile, as these shots were taken, the Myrtle Avenue El was still in service in Brooklyn, The Ed Sullivan Show was nearing its first decade on TV, and a black man named Elston Howard was starting his baseball career with The Yankees! 🇵🇷🇺🇸😎

The Myrtle Av. El is reputed to have been the last wooded rail line to run in North America for revenue service.

@@louisa1421 That is absolutely true! I am a New Yorker. The Myrtle Ave el was the last el in the city to have an el from Downtown Brooklyn to Maspeth, Queens funniness on the surface for half a mile to Metropolitan Ave. It was also the last one to have joint subway and el trains to the terminal at the Queens terminal . There were also joint el and and subway lines since 1905, the first one was on the 2nd Ave. El branch on Westchester Avenue in the Bronx. NYC joint el service was from 1905 to 1969 ended on October 1969.

Speaking of "last" things, they were the last service with the old "Cage" cars. I remember riding them back in the 50's.

I wasn’t born when the Third Avenue El operated in Manhattan and much too young when it was torn down. But I did remember and rode the Bronx part. And growing up in Brooklyn, I remember and riding the Myrtle Avenue El many times (the Myrtle Avenue El had a distinctive “rhythm” whenever it would roll on the tracks).

Your heart swells nostalgically watching this reel of vintage trains that once graced and operated in NYC's subways in the 1950s. It was a decade when trains were a necessity for travel and commuting purposes in the Big Apple. Isn't it comforting that rail passengers were leaving contently after their station stops, knowing they were safe without worrying about getting robbed or unknowingly assaulted, unlike today? 8:28 The spacious exterior design of this station is majestic to behold, like admiring a 14th-century Cathedral from below. What a shame a structure, as picturesque as it appeared over 60 years ago, is obsolete. Heaven only knows if such a mechanism takes me back to 1955, I can take a delightful trip riding a camouflaged green train with its slow whirling ceiling fans and straw-sewn seats.

I remember as a kid in the late 60s to the very early 70s, there were still some old trains in service: with the old wicker-like seats, the old ceiling fans and the incandescent light bulbs overhead, especially on the LL (Canarsie line).

We need the El restored, but for NYCTA busses running on rubber tires! It would alleviate traffic congestion on 3rd Avenue!!

Would be great to see someone take these films and upgrade them like the other old films with AI stabilization, color, sharpening and time correction, although, looks like that's not a problem in these films.
