Fun fact: the actress who plays Maria is Fernanda Torres, the daughter of Fernanda Montenegro (the actress who played the main character of Central Station). Both are legends.

It’s based on a true story yeah, told by the memoirs of Fernando Gabeira (the character of Fernando/Paulo), who participated in the kidnapping, even became a politician and today is a centrist liberal TV political commentator. Brazil Military Dictatorship lasted between 1964 to 1985 but it had different “phases”. The worst one with the harshest repression and censorship was between the late 60s and mid-70s, so the events of this movie happen when the regime was beginning its harshest phase, stimulating a counterrevolution by communist activists to overthrow the dictatorship. They were usually young students and idealists like the characters of this film. Think that the Cold War had different effects in different part of the world. Eastern Europe was in the zone of influence of the Soviets, so they had a lot of puppet communist governments. South America was mostly on the zone of influence of USA though, which supported military fascist governments in order to prevent communists (who would side with the Soviet Union) from reaching power. Dictatorship ended in 1985 and the first post-dictatorship elections were held in 1989, marking the present democratic regime that Brazil still lives under. Brief history of Brazil for you: Before 1500 - Pre-colonial era, with only some Indigenous tribes living in the territory that later became Brazil. The Portuguese first arrive in 1500. 1500 - 1815 - Colonial era, as a colony of exploration under control of Portugal. Slavery, underdevelopment, resources being stolen to be sent to Europe, that kind of thing. “Brazil” was only only formally founded as a colony in 1549. 1815 - 1822 - Brazil joins the Kingdom of Portugal (not a colony, but a part of Portugal itself) as a strategy to up the status of Brazil and prevent independence movements. Capital of Portugal is moved from Lisbon to Rio de Janeiro and royal family lives in Brazil because Napoleon would kill them in Europe. 1822 - 1989 - Brazilian Empire. Brazil gets its independence in 1822, declared by the Portuguese Monarch himself who decides to stay in Brazil (Pedro I of Brazil; Pedro IV of Portugal). He becomes the first King of Brazil but only governs until 1831, has a Brazilian son born in Rio de Janeiro (Pedro II of Brazil) who is Brazil’s King between 1840 to 1889. 1889 - 1930 - Oligarchical Republic. Abolition of Slavery creates a looot of backlash in Brazil’s elites who overthrow the King and ally with the Military to declare a Republic. Elections are held but because of certain practices they weren’t really “democratic” in that period, just shifting between oligarchies from bigger states of Brazil. 1930 - 1945 - Vargas Era. Getúlio Vargas coups and kinda becomes Brazil president (or dictator depending who you ask) for 15 years. Controversial period because even though the “Estado Novo” had some fascist characteristics of repression; it also marked the start of Industrialization of Brazil (which previously was mostly only designed for rural activities that served a few elites) and Labour’s rights being given to the population, which makes Vargas very loved by many - and a reference to some left-wing nationalists to this day. 1945 - 1964 - Populist Republic. The most democratic period so far, but also very polarized with elections being disputed by populists in the right (UDN, actual fascists) and left (Vargas and his followers), with a centrist party too that governs with JK between 1955-1960. Vargas comes back as president between 1950-1954, now democratically elected but commits suicide in 1954 because of military pressure against him and some of basic left-wing things (like Labour rights) starting to be considered too “communist” with the start of Cold War. 1964 - 1985 - Military Dictatorship. It was established during Cold War’s height with the excuse of “preventing communism”, initially supported by USA, but it lasts 21 years with no elections for president being held. Period marked by repression, censorship, etc but also by large economic growth in the 70s that boosted the regime, followed by economic decline in the 80s that marked the dictatorship loss of support and downfall as well. 1985 - Present - Brazil as you know today. Already broke the record for longest democratic period in Brazil’s history. 90s was more of a neoliberal decade consensus after the fall of USSR. 00s were marked by Lula’s ascendancy to power and more social inclusion of poorer segments in the economy. 10s were marked by increasing political polarization and chaos, with the rise of far-right populist movements sinve 2013/2014 and that culminated in Bolsonaro victory in 2018. And 20s is too early to tell how it’s going to be remembered but Lula defeated Bozo in 2022.

Realidade?...😂😂😂 Ainda bem que esses comunistas não conseguiram instaurar a ditadura do proletariado como o próprio Gabeira e o Jorge disseram. Os malucos esquerdistas que querem isso.

3:55 This actress' name is Fernanda Torres, in real life she is the daughter of actress Fernanda Montenegro... 10:19 Fernanda Montenegro, played the character Dora, in the film Central do Brasil. Fernanda is elected by Brazilians as the best actress in Brazil. Fernanda Montenegro is also in this film here. They both made a film, called "Casa de Areia" it's a very good film, one plays the other's character in three stages of the film.

Another great reaction. You could watch As boas maneiras (good manners, 2017), it's a horror movie. I agree that Alain Arkin, the ambassador, wasn't that good. One of hs best role was in Little miss sunshine (2006), he won an Oscar for it.🖤

Hey, it's me again. Lol The movie is based on a book written by Fernando Gabeira, who is also the main character in the movie. The name of the book and the Portuguese title of the movie translates to something like "What's This, Comrade?" The movie slightly alters some real-life characters, but it remains essentially faithful to the true story and is very well done. The book delves more deeply into character development and showcases various aspects of Brazilian politics during the dictatorship. Fernando Gabeira is a well-known journalist today, quite different from the Marxist idealist portrayed in the movie. Nowadays, he is more of a liberal journalist. The book accurately depicts the reality of the time. For example, communist guerrilla movements weren't just attracting Marxists; they included many people who were fighting for freedom against the dictatorship - including liberals. Oh, and if you Google it, you can find the real pictures of Fernando Gabeira at the time. A lot of the pictures were recreations.

Brazilian art and popular culture have been vilipended and demonized in recent years. It's nice to know that brazilian movies are being watched in Lebanon. Here are some movies that you may find interesting. They are not necessarily the ones I think are "the best", but just a few that I could remember. I hope it can help you. The order is purely alphabetical. - A Casa de Alice [Chico Teixeira, 2007] - Aqueles Dois [Sergio Amon, 1985] - Bicho de Sete Cabeças [Laís Bondanzky, 2001] - Eles não usam black-tie [Leon Hirszman, 1981] - O Caso dos Irmãos Naves [Luís Sérgio Person, 1967] - O Dragão da Maldade contra o Santo Guerreiro [Glauber Rocha, 1969] - O homem que virou suco [João Batista de Andrade, 1980] - O Pagador de Promessas [Anselmo Duarte, 1962] - Os 12 Trabalhos [Ricardo Elias, 2006] - Os Fuzis [Ruy Guerra, 1971] - Rio, Zona Norte [Nelson Pereira dos Santos, 1957] I saw you liked "O homem que copiava", of Jorge Furtado. So if you want to watch a short, I recommend three of Furtado's shorts: - Esta não é sua vida [1991] - O dia em que Dorival encarou a guarda [1986] - Ilha das Flores [1989] This last one was, at least in the 1990's/2000's, a bit of a classic in schools. It is a fake documentary: the text in the screen at the end is important, because there you read that "Ms. Someone is in fact Ms. blablablah", "That place is in fact blablablah" etc. --- I don't know if you are familiar with the cinema of other latin american countries, but you find very interesting movies across the region. Some countries, like Argentina and México, produces a large amount of movies (since as far as the 1930's). If you are not familiar with it already, I strongly recommend you to take a look.
