I guess this scene had some potential, but it's a lot of flash with not much substance and it fails to make sense at multiple points.

I maintain that the best possible version of the Obi-Wan show would not have had Obi-Wan and Vader meet at all. Let their encounter on the Death Star be their first real meeting since Mustafar and skip all this nonsense. Let Obi-Wan see Vader's aftermath and go through the emotional journey of finding out Vader's still alive, then blaming himself for Vader's actions because of his perceived failures, then resolving to help fight the inquisition before returning to his duty protecting Luke. Let Obi-Wan lose, almost get detected, and use all of his cunning to escape. Set up a broken hermit in the desert waiting for Luke to be old enough to fix his mistakes. Leave him with a drop of hope that by taking out an inquisitor or two, he's making things easier for the few Jedi who survived. But he'll never know if he's having that impact or not. Let it be introspective, thoughtful, and emotional. That sounds much better than what Kenobi turned out to be.

Shit, let Obi-Wan kill some Purge Troopers and make Reva the main antagonist instead of making her some offside, lesser antagonist. In the final duel, it would be Obi-Wan vs Reva, and he would have to choose between killing her or sparing her after she receives a near-critical injury.

The problem with this entire series is that yes, we all knew there would be a giant duel between darth and obi-wan. Despite there being zero stakes because neither them Or leia for that matter can die. Making obi just decide to leave bc he’s doesn’t want to kill dath vader. There could have been a more believable end to the fight that isn’t just “oh noes i dont want to kill the person i said i would kill bc im sad bc hes my friend”. I honestly would have accepted the snow speeder to deus ex machina themselves out of nowhere causing darth to retreat over this because that would at least not kill the entire purpose of the show.

Yep. The writers forced Darth Vader into the show for no other reason than fan service. It could have been so much more interesting if we saw Obi-Wan have an entirely different adventure, grow and change as he grapples with his failure (but without being completely destitute like he is in the show at first), but no... we can't be original can we.

I take so many issues to how Vader's fighting style has been choreographed in this god-awful show, but also the Sc.38 Reimagined fan film. While Vader's chosen lightsaber form is fundamentally still the Djem So variant of Form V, he layered it by taking elements from all the other lightsaber forms, and most of all, Vader in the majority of comics and novels is portrayed as taking a deceptively defensive stance, to make the opponents overextend while studying and taunting them, occasionally pelting them with the Force, going fully aggressive only when the opponent is relentless or truly gets to him (this was more likely earlier in his career, much less by the time of the OT). Sc.38 Reimagined makes the mistake of portraying him as a raging bull, while this show just makes him utterly inconsistent : one moment he's holding the saber with one hand as if it's just a joke but still fights aggressively, then with both as if he's under pressure. He uses the Force to put out a fire and ragdoll Obi Wan, but then can't put it out again. Same for Obi Wan. He's meant to be the master of Soresu, Form III, which is almost purely defense oriented. Instead, they make him all flamboyant and aggressive. Just dumb spectacle with no meaning, no rhyme or reason, no visual storytelling about these characters through their tactics or fighting style. Just consume and get excited because fanservice.

Although I agree with all of this, I will point out that some of the flourishing was actually purposeful. For example, the ‘behind the back’ lightsaber block you see Obi-Wan do vs Vader, we’ve actually seen him do that exact move in the past already; Obi did this in his first fight vs Maul. This move is possibly a subtle call back to that moment, but it is actually a real defensive block in Form III (Soresu) called the rear guard.
@yrooxrksvi7142
@yrooxrksvi7142 Жыл бұрын
@@user-vr5zk9ox8d I tried to keep my OP as normie-friendly as possible, but yeah, I know Obi Wan's fighting style is more of a hybridization of Soresu, Ataru, and bits of Shii Cho and Shien. So it's perfectly fine for him to be acrobatic and flamboyant, but he's never been the aggressor ever since he was knighted. Obi Wan is a subtle subverter, something that, ironically, Vader replicated.

@@yrooxrksvi7142 Fair enough, and very true. At least, it should have shown him being more patient and looking for openings like he did vs Grievous and Anakin on Mustafar. I mean, even in the show when he’s training with Anakin Obi-Wan is disciplining Anakin on this very matter, and is the one reason why he’s able to out maneuver his opponents.

Why did the show with the biggest characters in Star Wars look, feel and sound like a fan film. ROTS, a movie thats over 15 years old looks way better and sure it had a bigger budget but thats another issue, why did they under fund this show so much. Disney are so out of touch with this sort of thing, they give Andor, a show about a side character from Rogue One, a better budget and better direction aswell as writers. I was so excited when this show was announced, Vader and Obi-Wan, 2 of the biggest and most popular characters having a show solely based on them or so we thought until we got a welfare Trilla character in Reva and be expected to be invested in her in a show we are watching to see more of Obi-wan and Vader. Hugely disappointed when I watched it and saw how badly they butchered this show. Good video, You deserve way more views and subs.

Am I the only one who thinks that thinking of Leia should not have given Obi-Wan a power boost? Light siders users have emotions and attachments sure, but the way they wield the force is by meticulously controlling their emotions so those emotions cannot interfere with their ability to use the Force, because light siders draw their power from balance, not passion. Dark siders draw their power from strong emotions. Therefore Obi-Wan thinking of Leia should weaken him, not strengthen him. We even saw Maul use this to advantage when he had his first rematch with Obi-Wan during the Clone Wars. He repeatedly taunted Obi-Wan about killing Qui-Gon, and Obi-Wan got visibly enraged, and Maul promptly beat his ass. Maul even said "Your rage has unbalanced you." Whereas in their final fight, Maul tries to taunt Obi-Wan to no effect. Obi-Wan learned from his mistake and remained calm and balanced, which gave him a decisive victory.
@meghdeepray9464
@meghdeepray9464 2 ай бұрын
No it makes more sense that it did so. The Jedi way was overly obsessive about the removal of attachments to where it backfired on them. That is part of the narrative of the original and prequels both. It's why in a lot of books and later stories in the extended universe, Luke's Jedi order is much more liberal with attachments and sees them as natural. That is precisely because the Jedi way was unbalanced. Obi-Wan wouldn't have been able to tap into the strength that comes from embracing a healthy attachment before because of his Jedi training and discipline, but here, when he is in the process of rediscovery and while still vulnerable, he allows himself to feel those attachments and that is what allows him to gain a connection to the force that was much stronger than anything he was ever able to accomplish prior. It was only because he had not fully reintegrated himself into his old Jedi training that he was able to tap into the force to such a degree.

Screw this series. Vader orders the entire ship to turn around for Obi-Wan, letting the rebels go, (instead of using a magnetic beam, or sending tie-fighters, or just keep firing...)... but ends up getting into his shuttle and flying after it himself , thus missing out on the rebels for no reason at all. Obi-Wan trusts Leia to some random rogue who has already seeded his transmitter... The duel with Vader is miserable. They wave their swords like baseball bats in episode 9, and the Force has generally turned into an anime - they crush rocks and make craters in the ground, but they can’t break each other’s bones in the same way ... they can withstand the blows of multi-ton boulders ... Obi-Wan, without jokes, becomes a god thanks to the power of friendship and lifts weight much more than Yoda ... at some point he hits Vader with the HILT of the sword ... cuts his back, but that doesn’t paralyse him ... and most importantly, he doesn’t finish him off for the second time, although he himself said his friend is dead... Vader does not call the cruiser to shoot down Obi-Wan's ship, but it turns out that he has a hyperdrive, which makes the whole last episode even more pointless, since he and Leia could fly to Alderaan on it all this time already at the end of episode 4 .. . Owen and Beru do not set any traps for Reva in the doors, they only shoot her one at the time, do not catch up with her on a speeder, do not evacuate on the speeder, do not call the local police, the same Jabba the Hutt (with the promise of money), and Luke is advised to run on foot into the desert, to the Tuskens... Apparently Vader just left Reva a ship…Reva with a hole in her HEART can easily fight, run and carry weights ... And finally, she, who cuts off the hands of all those who disagree, throws knives at people, kills everyone in her path, hunts the Jedi trying to kill them, tortures a 10-year-old child , suddenly cannot kill Luke, because he sees himself in him (but not in Leah) ... by the way, why? Does she know he's Vader's son? How? And Obi-Wan forgives her, although he saw what she was doing and Tala died because of her... Now the whole Empire knows that Bail Organa communicates with Obi-Wan, they are looking for him all over the galaxy, but at the same time Obi-Wan quietly flies to Alderaan to chat with Leia... Obi-Wan communicates with Luke, although Owen told him in A New Hope that he died at the same time as his father ... Qui-gon, it turns out, can appear without any meditation, but the whole series did not do this ... As a result - Obi-Wan, Owen, Beru, Bale failed their missions to protect children, and they are only alive because the Empire and Vader are even more incompetent, and Reva suddenly became kind ... and now we are waiting for a series about her ... Thank you Disney, now you've ruined every single character in the original trilogy. Star Wars is long dead, and there's no more room for nails in the coffin.

5:09 I wouldn't say that Vader's lightsaber being at head level in the next frame is a bad thing, it's pretty common for action scenes to set back a fist or blade by a few inches in order for a blow to feel even more powerful. The only problem really is that Obi-Wan isn't in the same position, which ruins the whole illusion of having a stronger blow since it distracts the viewers from it. Every Frame Is a Painting covers the concept in his "Jackie Chan - How to Do Action Comedy" video and he explains it far better than I did, so if any of that sounds interesting then I'd check it out.

This fight would be way cooler if they were trying to hit each other, and not just aiming for the opponent’s lightsaber. Once you notice it, it’s blatantly obvious. And it really pulls me out of it. When the characters are actually trying to hurt each other (instead of pretending to try), it makes the fight a lot more “realistic” and intense.

I didnt watch the series as a whole, im not going to spend a lot of energy in attempt to defend disney star wars. But some of the stuff you complained about seems forced. Vader is angry. Seething. Fully steeped in pure rage and hatred. How many angry people do you know that have shakesperian dialogue? Vader seems excited at the prospect of obi wans strength returning because he wants to earn the victory. But the 'weakness that remains' refers to the jedi way. Vader knows that obi wan is wise and masterful, but has always refused to use strength for strengths sake; no matter the stakes. Obi wan giving him a prolonged assault, with the force no less, is his way to tell vader that he is very wrong about his assumptions and strategy. Obi wan will 'do what he must' exactly as he said before the duel. Obi wan had an advantage and siezed it with authority, leaving vader battered and beaten by his hand, again. It might not be good, but it does make some sense, i thought. Edit: he didnt do what he must, obviously, he walked away. Because hes struck with emotion. Grief. Part of that is denial. He doesnt want to believe something like 'vader killed anakin' he wants to believe anakin is suppressed by vader. It still makes sense. What could vader go on to do? Destroy the jedi? He already did. The ones left are in hiding, may as well be dead. Vader hunts husks of the jedi way, as a husk of a jedi.
