He actually hits on a very real truth in this song...I remember my Mum dying when I was just a young un, but with my father being a typical truck driver I was always taught that boys don't cry. I remember having to run a bath and cry under water when she passed, and then when I got out, having to pretend nothing is wrong. It's pretty cruel the way males have to deal with things sometimes.

My family always pushed 2 times when it is ok for a man to cry in front of others. The birth of your first child and the death of your mama. My father was a very stoic man. I only ever saw him cry when my mama died. I didn't even see him when his mama died. I got home, I saw him, we hugged and cried quietly for about a minute, then we got to work on her funeral without another word being said.

Up there with Lennon and McCartney, having the ability to write pop like this or write dark lyrics with a catchy tune, then write dark and gloomy songs like Blood flowers, Fascination Street, Last day of summer. If you like like this, listen to Inbetween days, close to me and Mint Car.

The Cure are my all time favourite band. I got into them in the early 80s when I was 13 and my older sister brought a tape back from her first term at uni. They were a fairly unknown cult band at the time and none of the other kids at my school had ever heard of them. This is early Cure from 1978 when they had quite a raw sound (They formed in 1976 at the height of punk). Robert Smith famously used a mega-cheap £20 guitar bought from Woolworths. Another excellent Cure track from this time is 'Three Imaginary Boys' I'd love to see Brad's reaction to the lyric structure which is very clever. The Cure have a HUGE catalogue of great songs. IMO their album 'Pornography' is their dark master piece. check out 'A Hundred Years' or 'A strange Day'. I'd also recommend a cover of the latter by Grand Duchy (aka The Pixies). One of their later albums 'Disintergration' also rates highly with many people. The Cure aren't exactly known for happy songs, but they do have some more poppy, commercial hits. Check out: Love cats, Friday I'm in Love or Caterpillar Girl. Lullaby is fun too (be sure to watch the video!) Of their later stuff I's suggest: From the Edge of the Deep Green Sea, Disintergration and perhaps Bare. N.B. Fun fact: Robert Smith was also a part-time member of Siouxie & The Banshees for a couple of years. Additionally he formed a side-band called 'The Glove' with Steve Severin of the Banshees while Sioxie and Budgie did their own side project 'The Creatures' who are good too. Siouxie Sioux is one of the most influential female singers in music history so you really need to check them out sometime. A good place to start would be Spellbound. Other tracks I'd recommend are Israel, Hong Kong Garden, Candyman, 92 degrees and Rhapsody. Their cover of Iggy Pop's classic 'The Passenger' is well worth a listen too.

The Cure is almost like other alt rock/ post-punk bands, The Smiths/Morrissey, early U2, REM, and Joy Division.. Upbeat music, sorrow like lyrics. 🎸 Melancholy (moody....happy/sad). Yall called it! This was typical '80s/'90s alternative rock vibe. This was '80s alt rock (late '70s) jangle pop/college rock.. Post punk.. Part of new wave. Goth rock too. Listen to " A Forest" from The Cure! That one is really good. The Cure is one of the pioneers of alternative rock and helped get alt rock from underground to mainstream. I was in school when they started become mainstreamish (early 90s?) Check out other similar bands ( more Gothic, darkwave) like Sioxsee and the Banshees, Killing Joke, Frozen Autumn, Clan of Xymox, Echo and the Bunnymen, etc.

I was lucky enough to see the Cure concert in the 80s and the 90s and when Robert Smith played guitar for Siouxsie and the banshees for a short very short time.... The 80s are the best!!! Thank you GOD for making me an 80s kid.

Genius... bitter sweet melancholy sums up the Cure! You should explore both their earlier darker stuff but also newer 'happy' songs :)

I happened upon these reactors the other night and tonight I may or may not have just spent the last two hours watching and commenting on every single video. The Cure. This is the birth of goth and emo. Total legends. They could still sell out huge stadiums now and they were underground and unrecognized by the radio for a long part of their career. They birthed an entire genre, an entire movement of dress, an entire movement of style. And yes he’s whiny. This is real emo!

My sister used to listen this band back when they were popular! I definitely remember this one. Thanks for reacting. There's a band called Boys Don't Cry and they did a song in 1986 called "I Wanna Be A Cowboy" it's quite funny.

From the cure pop era, sparkly tunes with (spot on brad ) melancholic lyrics. In between days is epic, close to you utterly encompasses them. Robert Smith is married to his childhood sweetheart, I’ve always thought that this is what allows him to tap into song about loss & isolation so well, as it’s so alien to him to be alone. But there is humour to them. Love cats 💗🐈 , caterpillar 🐛 are 2 of the most brilliant poptastic tunes available to the human ears
