Building off grid comes with a LOT of challenges, but some of them, you cant exactly anticipate. This driveway has been holding us up for weeks, with torrential rains, flooding, endless mud, and the strangest things breaking... we are so grateful to get a win this week!
Buying an excavator with NO EXPERIENCE was a gamble, but we felt it was the best way to make big progress here on our mountainous, heavily overgrown, and unmanaged hunting property. With another baby on the way, we've changed our plans & are building off grid cabin number 2. This cabin will be big enough for us to have live in for years to come, with beds for guests, solar, and a real septic tank (no more composting toilet).

Get you a little pump sprayer and fill it with diesel and spray it on the bottom of that dump trailer before loading it. It will help with unloading. It's how we dirt guys get our loads to clear out. Once it starts building up in the front of the trailer make sure to clear it out because it only gets worse over time. The trick was for getting asphalt to unload properly, but it works for dirt, too. I wouldn't worry much about contamination because you will only be using a cup or 2 over the entire bed. After you apply it, don't walk on it. You will bust your ass. Haha.

Keep a garden rake with the trailer. Turn it upside down and use it to pull the material out of your tilted trailer. Eddie

😂❤❤ Woody certainly had his fare share of annoyance this week ... showing patience big time ... but that was a trial first then now your project with the excavator and he is learning new skills for future maintenance wise not good timing now but an inevitable necessary evil cant wait for more projects etc next week stay healthy and safe

I'd look into a wireless remote for the dump trailer as well as a 12v vibrator to vibrate material out of trailer. That's what we use in big salt spreaders to clear that stubborn stuck salt.

Absolutely on the remote. Dunno if I can justify the vibrator, but we’ll see after 30+ loads for our drive. I may be able to justify it then.

This whole process of developing raw land is rough, and monotonous, and often it’s really not super sexy, but it’s our real journey! If there’s anything I’ve learned from sharing online, it’s that showing the whole journey is a better plan than just saving the cool stuff and pretending the other things didn’t happen. I don’t wanna give anyone false hope either lol

Next time, turn the cab on the opposite side of the blade and curl the boom and bucket all the way in. The thumb is easier to handle and easier to put the pin in.

Tip: when pulling trailer loaded around the house, put the transfer case in low range if it has it. Easier on clutch and everything. Check the material from the burnt house for nails!!! Usually is loaded with them.

For what your doing with the dump trailer it would be extremely helpful to have a wireless remote you can use a wireless winch remote from harbor freight $40 (and a diode if it’s power down) plenty of videos showing how to do it.

Why not dump a few trailer loads and then use the blade on the excavator you could pack it in an level it out at the same time just asking

It’s a lot of distance to cover in the excavator, a lot less ware and tear if we let it stay in the ditch and use the tractor for the spread
