I've had some serious setbacks with what I thought would be easy tasks. However, since I am not a good planner, these mistakes and holdups were bound to happen. Slowly and surely making progress but it feels slow. Thankful I am no longer sick but hopeful I can power through to get a roof on this thing sooner rather than later.
Thanks for watching!

Sorry but not the way to build 2 ft overhang first should have ridge board long to nail and left last rafter out and nail your outlooks to inner rafters and top of wall now I would add something to brace overhang

I just learned about ladder gable ends this past year. I haven't seen them on the west coast. When I learned about them I was told that they are limited to a max16 " overhang , at least in Virginia. I have always been a fan of 24" overhang and framed up outrigger gable ends. I have an open mind though. So very close to being covered over.

Howdy had a thought on the installation of the ladders under your overhang. I have never done this method on such a BIG overhang, but I was always taught that you install this flush to the outside piece of your roof frame. It is clearly, and I am sure you understand this now, the birds mouth on your inside ladder piece that is making your struggles so large. I hope you continue to feel better and I look forward to your next video!

Yes exactly. And the rafter I sistered in there was almost a full 1/4” thicker so was so hard getting it in.

@@WoodnessGoodness Kens Karpentry on KZfaq uses this method a lot, he is a small time builder in Vermont that does mainly Garages. He uses it because it is more for aesthetics in his application. Worth checking him out as a reference. I am afraid to say other than a metric ton of clamps and a ton of luck you are going to be hard pressed installing the rest alone. I hope you can wrestle up some help, you wife and child need you healthy.

That was crazy and entertaining. I've never seen anyone try to add the gable roof framing extension AFTER the sheathing was already on.

@HaydenGatesOR
@HaydenGatesOR 5 ай бұрын
Not only that then you repeat the mistake on the other side. I don't understand. You're building in a sag on those ladders, unless you build them before the sheathing they're going to have a permanent structural sag. And be difficult to put up as well. I'm just curious why you didn't learn from the front one and put the back ladders on before the rest of the sheathing?
@HaydenGatesOR

That said, I appreciate you sharing your struggles, this is one of the more realistic build channels in my opinion for diyers. Thank you for the honesty.
@WoodnessGoodness
@WoodnessGoodness 5 ай бұрын
@@HaydenGatesOR well I put a level and square on the one I just did and it’s actually pretty level considering. I will be adding two triangular supports on them and that should get rid of any other sag. I guess I did the sheathing because I found it was nice to have the strapping and sheathing to help support the install. The strapping has kept it pretty stiff sort of like outriggers.
@jnl.

ive seen it done on other channels a number of times. i dont know if its right or not, but people do it. usually when they are rushing to get the roof dried in before winter/rain or when someone only has help for a short time and would rather have the help getting the plywood up.

Really coming together, very nice. For those gable end parts, I had to do my single pitched shop roof myself. I just used scrap pieces on the outer fascia boards to set the angled fascia board on...if that makes sense. Sketchy but worked. Anyways you did it your way and it worked out.

Great work by yourself and your old man. You can tell he is confident on a ladder which is important for this build! Getting sheets of ply on a steep pitched roof is both heavy and awkward. Out of curiosity, how come you haven’t stayed at the building site in your caravan? Family commitments?

Graham, why don’t you organise a working bee weekend with your good mates. Take some tents and sleep onsite. Get all the high/difficult stuff done once and for all. I also recommend you get your chainsaw and clear a 10’ path around the cabin so you don’t keep tripping over all the growth there. It’s a real hazard to you. This cabin is going to be the thing that takes a real toll on you if you don’t work smarter my friend. I admire your tenacity, but you must be sensible in this situation. Warmest wishes from down under. 👏🏻🇦🇺

@@WoodnessGoodness Please do be extra careful Graham; more especially when you’re on your own working on the cabin. Bad things can and do happen on the safest of build sites. Write yourself a solid checklist and don’t leave home until you’ve checked it each time you’re heading out to the cabin. Safety equipment being on the top of your list. Love your work Graham, but you MUST be safe. Not just for your sake, but also for your family. And be kinder to yourself. Sending you a big Aussie hug so you feel 100% better really soon. Cheers mate. 👏🏻🇦🇺🎑

Sorry to hear you were sick. So many people were sick this holiday season. Also, I noticed you were using these metal clips to hold the plywood together. You don't really need them if you are using 16" centres on your rafters. I believe those are used for 24" or wider rafter spacing. Great teamwork with your dad.
