At the 1974 NFL Draft, Oakland Raiders quarterback George Blanda, completely out of nowhere and completely unprompted, took the time to bash one of the quarterbacks coming out, Kansas quarterback David Jaynes. And there truly was no reason for this bizarre outburst. As for how it turned out for everyone involved...

By this time of his career, Blanda was pretty much waiting for God. I heard that when he would play on a grass field, he would yell at players to get off of his lawn. As an old fart, I give him a pass

Jaynes had been arrested in college for urinating on a busy intersection. I wonder if Blanda knew about it?

If I was that kid's father,I'm going looking for Blanda immediately after that article came out. He had no business sticking his nose into that. You don't sabotage a kid's career that you don't even know

I remember David jaynes-when he played at Kansas and got drafted by the chiefs in the 1974 draft-I don’t know why George blanda pocked on him for no reason-maybe he knew something about jaynes that other teams didn’t-he wasn’t good enough to play quarterback in the NFL! I imagine that’s the reason! The world football league wasn’t the only explanation because jaynes didn’t want to sign with them! 😮😮😮😅

Man I didn't realize the Raiders had Stabler, Lamonica and Blanda at QB depth at that time. No they were not looking for a QB 😅. And you are correct saying Blanda was one of the greatest players of all time. And I am in no way a Raiders fan, but I respect the players they have had in the past.

They got rid of Blanda after the 1975 season. They said he found out because he came into the facility in 1976 & didn’t have a locker (that was on TV in the 1980s). Raiders won the Super Bowl in 1976.

George Blanda signed with Houston Oilers of the AFL when the NFL thought he was over the hill. The AFL ended up being the passing league and George proved he could play. Also was a influence on the younger QBs same as Case Keenum is today for Houston. After 20 yrs. Of playing pro ball, I'm positive the old man knew pro talent. He had been there and was a student of the game. Learned how to kick so could keep playing when he wouldn't be a top QB anymore, I say this so you would know, Blanda was football smart. He saw something he did think would work well in the league and said so. He was proven right. Blanda ended up in the Hall of Fame, he knew pro football and had championships titles to prove it.

George Blanda holds the NFL record for throwing the most interceptions in a season in 1962 with 42. He was actually in the AFL but the NFL counts the AFL records. He was QB for the Oilers. Amazingly the Oilers went 11-3 with Blanda as their starter and made to the AFL title game against the Dallas Texans (now KC Chiefs) which they lost 20-17 in double OT.

Blanda was renowned for being very free with his opinions and expressing them with a minimum of diplomacy. As an old AFL guy, he wouldn't have liked the conservative wishbone-heavy college football of the early '70s. On the other hand, the clips of Kansas with Jaynes look like more of a pro style offense. Maybe Blanda saw a flaw in Jaynes' technique. Or he was jyst being his notoriously cranky self.

The best story in the 1974 draft was actually in the NHL draft. The Buffalo Sabres drafted a fictional player out of boredom and spite.

You mentioned his name, and i had never heard of him before, so i am guessing Blanda was right. So just waiting to see if Blanda was just a broken clock, which is correct two times a day, or Blanda was knowledgeable.

Thumb down this video, George Blanda had an opinion, people asked him for his opinion. George Blanda was honest and brave about the QB, people today are to afraid to say the truth about anything for fear of the left wing mob canceling them. Maybe if Al Davis listened to people or had someone like Blanda around he would not have drafted JaMarcus Russell.

He wasn’t asked his opinion on Jaynes. He was just talking about the state of the college game with reporters and how he didn’t enjoy watching the Orange Bowl. That led to him bashing Jaynes for some reason. Trust me- if he was asked a question, I wouldn’t be making this video. This came completely out of nowhere

Did the chiefs have a good track record for drafting QB's? Like ever? Until Mahomes who were the successful qb's they drafted? We do know now right coach, right system and those two things alone could make or break a qb. Yet the disconnection of college to pro skills is very relevant. I remember any qb that scrambled was guaranteed he was not going to do well in the pocket passer pro style of the time. Heck players that didn't play in college a pro style offense were passed over for draftees that did. Helped with the learning curve in those days yet still was not a guarantee for success.

Not after Lenny Dawson left. Two QBs that I remember they had I believe both of them were drafted by the Chiefs were Ken Fuller in the 70’s and then in 1983 they drafted Todd Blackledge yes the Todd Blackledge who was a color commentator for college football. Those are the only two guys I remember the Chiefs drafted at QB.
