1973 I was in 9th grade and heard "Let's get it On". I was mesmerized! Fast forward to 1997. I interduce my 5 yr old son to Marvin on the ride school. Like father like son. Friends and family have passed on. Marvin Gaye has always been there 4 me. God bless

I’m 57 yrs old and Cry like a baby every time I hear this Song. My old Man! My Father, my Pops. Did H! One time as a kid, I walked in on him in the Bathroom, needle in his arm, eyes in the Heavens. Scared me to death. Nicest Man in the World. Sweetest man in the World. Always picked me up when he got out jail. Give me money and 15 mins later came back and asked for it back.(I would just hold on to it because I knew he was coming back for it) But he loved me. I miss him. Lost him at 21. Found him overdosed. One day I will be with him again. Greatest song ever for me. My Dad’s life!!

I overlooked this song the first time I heard the album as my attention was gripped by the more lauded tracks but by the second or third listen it hit me like a truck. Here is a desperate man on the brink of despair with no way out. Heartbreaking and prophetic. I've had forty years with this album and it's poignancy never diminishes.

Marvin is my all-time fave artist. PERIOD. His songs touch my soul...and in this one when he hits "stupid minded, so stupid minded...." I will forever sink into the tracks Marvin layed down. I grew up on this music so its hard for me to listen to most of the new stuff. The bar is so incredibly high.

That is one deep song from his heart I lost two brothers one in 75 survive Vietnam to come home to OD on his meds and alcohol and H I was 17 my other brother on Fentanyl that was in 2023 so I know what Marvin is raping about , to all those who lost someone to that evil drug my they RIP❤

He's talking about his own addiction. "Flying High" is a metaphor. "Self Destruction in my Hands" are the drugs. It all about his drug addiction. Drugs make slaves out of men.
