The Dan Ackroyd drunk Santa with the salmon is one of the greatest on screen depictions of pathos. Iconic.

One of my favorite comedies from an era when parody, satire and context were still utilized and understood. Such a unique concept and a great cast.

Trading Places was Eddie Murphy's second film. He was 21 when Trading Places was filmed. I would also recommend his first film 48 hours, it is a buddy cop film with some comedy. You will probably enjoy it since you liked Lethal Weapon.

One of the things I like about this movie is Dan's response when he's wearing the Santa suit and Eddie is first trying to track him down. "Winthorpe!" "Rrrrrraaaaaahhh!" I guess that moment speaks to me. 😂

This movie is such a fun time! My mom does have interesting taste in movies, but I'll forever be grateful that she introduced me to this.

This movie was huge when it first came out. Ackroyd and Murphy were riding high on their places on Saturday Night Live so everyone expected nothing less than a good time. Great reactions as always!

One of the best films of the 80s saw it in the cinema in 1983 everyone was in stitches watching it. So many funny moments too many to mention. A great film to watch at Christmas time. Cannot believe this is 40 years old this year.

Great reaction this is a class movie. Other than all movies that have already been mention, Eddie isnt know for his serious parts but he can do them. The Golden Child is a classic also within Charles Dance as the antagonist. Eddie plays a finder of missing children. It's a movie I think you guys would enjoy.

The guy sitting behind the desk at the police station that is telling Winthrop about the angel dust is Frank Oz, he was a long time puppeteer for Sesame Street. He did the voice of Grover and he has done the voice of Yoda in all of the Star Wars movies. Also the guy at the pawn shop is Bo Diddley, at the time he was a very popular blues guitarist and singer.

Wonderful reactions to this awesome comedy movie, from the excellent Media Knights. The main cast in Trading Places are incredible, but the two standouts for me are... Not Jamie Lee Curtis, but Hollywood legends Don Ameche and Ralph Bellamy! :)

The short selling they did in the stock market scene actually helped change market rules in 2010 and became known as the Eddie Murphy rule.

Another Eddie Murphy movie I can't recommend enough is The Golden Child (1986) it's an underrated gem, in it he plays a social worker tasked with rescuing a gifted kid with magical powers who can prevent the end of the world. & a Dan Akroyd movie I highly recommend is The Blues Brothers (1980) it's a comedy musical (also directed by John Landis) in which he stars along with the late John Belushi as blues musicians getting their old band back together to raise the money needed to save their childhood orphanage. Along the way, they fall foul of the police, neo nazi's and a rival band. Please react to both as soon as you can :)

"Four Rooms"" from 1995 is for me one of the greatest movies to watch on New Year. I wonder why nobody reacted to it in the past years.

Absolute classic!!! Love this movie. Fun Fact, Don Ameche, who played Mortimer Duke, doesn't like to swear so his scene where he says "F*** HIM!!" was done in a single take because he didn't want to swear.

I had a Betamax player given to me as a kid with two tapes, one blank to record from TV and Trading Places. I now realise why they gave the Betamax away but I’ll be forever thankful for Trading Places, apart from the comedy the classical music was a revelation for me. ❤

You gotta watch True Lies! Jamie Lee Curtis, Arnold Schwarzenegger, James Cameron. One liners, comedy, romance, mind blowing practical effects. One of the best 90s action movie ever. What more could you ask for? It's everything you like so much!

Beverly Hills Cop, 48 Hours, Trading Places and Coming to America are Murphy's best early films, IMO. The Golden Child is also good.

This movie came out in 1983 and was Eddie Murphy's 2nd movie. Hard to believe you haven't seen it until now. He also did his stand up comedy special DELIRIOUS in 1983. His first movie was 48 HOURS in 1982. All this while he was still a cast member on SATURDAY NIGHT LIVE from 1980 to mid 1984.

Best Eddie Murphy movie, hands down, was his first, 48 Hrs. Nick Nolte co- starred, who was a huge leading man in the 80s and 90s. It was also the template for all the cop buddy movies that filled cinemas ever since.

When Denise made the comment about comedy being hard t caught my attention. I have been a long time member of toastmasters and have achieved some success in public speaking. Doing comedy whether in a speech or other presentation can be exhausting! It is a lot of work being funny! When Dustin Hoffman was interviewed about his movie Tootsie. In talking about comedy he even got emotional. One of his statements stuck with me he said "comedy is serious business". SO insightful!

All those early 80s to 90s movies, involving directing by frank Oz, (he always puts himself in his movies...look for the bald guy with glasses!) and films involved with acting writing etc., with Ramis, Ivan Reitman,Akroyd etc., and these monster comedies that first used the ultra serious John Williams for music!!!, was just all comedy genius! Going back to animal House, blues Brothers, stripes, of course the Ghostbusters stuff....it's just all comedy gold! Pro tip, U WILL see a cameo again of the Duke Brothers, in the first Coming to America, also an Eddie Murphy movie! The Duke Brothers are Old School Hollywood royalty! Been acting since black and white! Ralph Bellamy and Don Ameche!

I love how the characters of the Duke brothers used the Koch brothers as inspiration.

Ha! I work in that building! The home of Duke and Duke, the boardroom is preserved as it was in the film, on the 5th floor! Quite the tourist attraction, even after all these years!

Had to watch this for Sociology class a few years back when we were learning about nature vs nurture theories. I'd already seen the movie as a child but obviously never picked up on that as a central theme until I watched it again as a teen.

Fun little known fact about "Trading places". It is a Christmas movie in Italy.

Good comedies are the glue that holds society together, this one does a fine job. The genre hasn't had so much success lately in the main stream, and that is unfortunate.

The cop in booking that finds the PCP on Louis was Frank Oz, the famous puppeteer and voice for Yoda and many other Muppets and characters like Miss Piggy, Fozzie Bear, Animal, Grover and Cookie Monster. He plays a similar role in Blues Brothers. And the the pawn broker is played by the one-and-only rock and rol hall of fame Bo Diddley. There are other Cameos too like, Richard Hunt as Wilson as a stock market trader, Al Franken as a Baggage Handler in the train, a young Giancarlo Esposito as a cellmate when Eddie character is in jail, and Jamie Lee Curtis younger sister Kelly Curtis as a cameo too as Penelope's friend Muffy on the scene in the country club. This is such a fantastic movie for that big social science experiment: what happens when "Trading Places"...... I've seen immigrants come to this country with only a nickel in their pocket but a million in drive and hope and do very well. Extremely kind and generous. I've also found rich people to be kind and generous as well. I think 'new money' are the ones that deserve the bad rap. I got plenty of stories about that.... I appreciated your commentary about remembering our blessings especially during the holidays. People quickly discount having a roof over their head and food in the fridge. Or even worse, their good health. Think again if you don't have one of those..... Loved your reaction to the movie. One of my favorites especially from Eddie. I love early Eddie Murphy. I like some of his more recent work but not quite as much as his classic movies. Beverly Hills Cop is one of his best. The ending to Trading Places is so satisfying 😊

Both Dan Ackroyd and Eddie Murphy were at the top of their game during this era. I second many of the other recomendations made, especially 48 Hrs and Beverly Hills Cop!

The "YEAH!" guy is one of my favorite parts of this film. (I have MANY favorite parts of this film.) At 13:17 when Eddie Murphy comes back with the "yeah!" - cracks me up. 16:01 - another favorite moment that showcases the brilliant acting of Denholm Elliot (Coleman the butler). You didn't include the exact moment in your edit, but I know you'll know the moment I mean. Just before he closes the door on Winthorpe the second time, a flash of pity crosses his face. "My old boss might be a pompous entitled jerk, but he doesn't deserve this crap that my real bosses the Duke Brothers are forcing me to do. I hate myself for the part I am being forced to play." All in a flash of an instant of facial expression before he closes the door. His other best line comes as the re-united gang are planning their revenge against the Brothers, and it's two words: "Egg nog?" Probably fifty years of class warfare and pent-up resentment boiled into those two simple words. Just brilliant. Louie is on his knees at 17:03, just like Billy Ray was on his knees pretending to be a legless blind veteran. Full circle! I've seen this film dozens of times, and had never noticed that detail, until another commenter on another YT reaction mentioned it. Always something new to notice! The opening montage over the credits, you pointed out the brilliant visual story-telling. The rich and the poor, the privileged and the working-class. The landmarks of Philadelphia. Set up the setting and the themes right off the bat, without even a line of dialogue. This was also a break-out role for Jamie Lee Curtis. Prior to this, she was mostly known as a "scream queen," just appearing in horror films. This gave her a chance to prove her ability acting in a different role, as a comedian, and also showed off two of her other impressive assets to a wide audience. This film opened up a wider range of acting opportunities. As a Christmas story, it also does have a taste of that Scrooge story, as far as Louie's redemption arc, and the general class distinctions and inequality being addressed. Most other reactors I've seen comment on the film and the actors and the comedy, but you guys really dove into the deeper issues of social justice and income inequality and sex work and generosity and empathy. Very appreciated, to recognize and comment on all of those things! It really is more than "just" a funny comedy; it touches on all of those social issues, using satirical comedy as the sugar to help that medicine go down.

Fantastic movie!!! LETS GOOOO!!! 💪😎💪 Don Ameche HATED so called "blue humor" (offensive or raunchy jokes) and demanded a closed set for the bathroom N-word scene. He nailed it in one take :)

YAAASS. I love this movie. Hilarious! I love watching it after Christmas and before New Year's. When you start doing comedies regularly, you're in for some real gems from the past, especially from John Hughes. Planes, Trains and Automobiles, The Breakfast Club, Ferris Bueller....

So the short of what happened at the end was because the orange crops weren't affected by winter, then there would large amounts of cheap oranges. The Dukes thought the crops were affected, so instead of selling high then buying low, they bought high then sold low. Aykroyd and Murphy knew the real crop report so they sold high and bought low. The numbers they showed on the boards meant that Aykroyd and Murphy made contracts to buy oranges at $0.29 a pound in units of a thousand, and also made contracts to sell those exact same oranges at $1.42 a pound, making a profit of 545%. Oranges are traded in units of a thousand pounds, with several units per single contract, and you could hear traders talking about buying and selling hundreds of contracts. It's not exactly known how much they invested with the life savings and the money meant for Beaks, but the current guesstimate is in the tens of millions, possibly over 100 million. What was done to achieve such success (trading commodities on inside information obtained from the government) wasn't illegal back when the movie was made, but when it was made illegal in 2010, it was appropriately named the Eddie Murphy Rule.

In addition to Coming to America, I would also recommend the Beverly Hills Cop series (if you haven't already seen them) for more young Eddie Murphy. If you love the story line and comedy aspect of this movie - the switcheroo/fish out of water/rich vs poor - I would highly recommend Overboard with Goldie Hawn and Kurt Russell. It's another comedy where a rich individual gets a taste of the poor life and learns some life lessons in wonderful, comedic ways of course!
