Skullz reacts to Part of Me by Tool for the first time
Tool is an American rock band from Los Angeles. Formed in 1990... due to Tool's incorporation of visual arts and very long and complex releases, the band is generally described as a style-transcending act and part of progressive rock, psychedelic rock, and art rock. The relationship between the band and today's music industry is ambivalent, at times marked by censorship, and the band's insistence on privacy....Tool has won four Grammy Awards, performed worldwide tours, and produced albums topping the charts in several countries.

The two parts of him talking is the duality of the human mind the shadow and the ego, the ego wants the person to hold on while the shadow is telling them to let go, hence “it’s time to die a little give it up.” = ego death (that’s the sacrifice)

This band is a part of me, and this album in particular brings out so many memories of my teen anger and anxiety, now I can listen to it from a way more mature perspective and it just grows even better, better than one might think.

Finally !!! You said exactly what I've been saying for 20 years. I've never heard a band completely reinvent themselves album to album like these guys, and I've listened to A LOT of music in A LOT of different genres. The sound of the album, the artwork on the albums, the lyrics, everything is it's own entity.

Cold and ugly (live) the next track after this is the first tool song ever recorded, Maynard had some lyrics from his old band (C.A.D.) that he used on sober, but the first ever tool recorded track with all original material was cold and ugly on their Demo tape from 91 (72826) that happens to be the only studio version of it they’ve ever done, same with jerk-off, but I prefer the live versions then the demos surprisingly haha

Some would say this song is Maynard talking to his "member". Another theory that Seb made during his reaction was that it's about ego death, or the act of wrestling with one's own ego.

I think you're right about the drug addiction. While I like this EP a lot I've spent very little time pulling it apart (except Opiate. That song really feels like the beginning of Tools DNA). The "I know you better than I know myself" reminds me of when I smoked. I was an angry or a sad smoker. When I put my mind to quitting I found I would start pushing my own buttons until I'd upset myself enough that I'd give myself a reason to smoke. It was literally the morning I realized this that I quit. I was at the intersection on my way to work where I either turned left to the servo (Gas Station. Servo is an Australian slang for gas station) and buy cigarettes or turn right and go to work. I started digging at my insecurities and digging at things in my life that got me angry. Then it hit me. I realized that the addiction knew all of my flaws and strengths. It knew how to make me cop out and not just give it what it wants, but to convince me its what I want. I imagine hard drugs are that but much worse. That's what I love about Tool. They speak to a primal part of humanity that is always going to be there. It's written with a sense of the classic in mind Sorry I'm late I got busy and forgot you had put a video up

This song, and the title track Opiate, are pretty much the only songs from this album that they continued playing well into their career as a band. The version of this song on Opiate is pretty great.....but, over the years they reworked it quite a bit for live shows. It's worth checking out. Their later live reinterpretation of the breakdown/bridge especially.....is gorgeous. Adam totally changes it up and it's quite beautiful.

The word opiate for this EP comes from an old quote (I forgot the name of whom) but it goes something like, “Religion is an opiate.” it has less to do with addiction and more so organized religion and thinking for yourself, that’s why there’s an alien type thing in a priests outfit/suit on the cover art

I’m pretty sure it was Karl Marx that said “Religion is the Opiate of the Masses”. Unfortunately, it’s an observation that was used as a mass manipulation tactic many times; the tools of religion can be used to subvert and desensitize people to the reality of things.

Opiate is titled that way from the song-don't want to be a spoiler as you'll get to it. I would recommend doing the next 2 songs within one video, as they are live and blend into/ go together Edit to add I always thought of this one as a breakup song of sorts. A good friends' band opened up for TooL back in these days and he asked James what he was on and he replied outright "I don't do drugs". Of course, this was early on and he likely dabbled with psychedelics after meeting up with the likes of Alex Grey etc

Well now that you say it that way....... tool is a open discussion; experience.... staying true to what they’ve always meant. Life........ the things, the every things we can all understand, from certain life routes. But we get it.... I’m vague, but i get it.... we sings our views and perspectives..... leaving puzzled but understand that to some... I guess that’s the light we can wake by

I always thought of this as less about drug addiction or anything like that, and more like a story of a person talking to their past self, one that they despise, one that maybe was ignorant or judgmental or 'holier than thou'. They are spitting back in its face, not wanting to be that anymore, saying you thought you were so smart, so righteous, "how about I 'sacrifice you' so I can move on - because you're just a part of me, one that I can amputate and discard." Maybe even Maynard discarding his own childhood experience with his religious upbringing and the 'god' that had betrayed him and his mom (probably a stretch).

Nice comp with YYZ. If you’re looking for another song with shades of that, Mastodon’’s Pushing the Tides has it in spades. Part of me, on one level, is much simpler, thematically, than you might think. Of course all tool song work on multiple levels, but Part of me, you might say, is a precursor to Maynard’s Dick. “You don’t speak. You don’t judge. You can’t leave. Can’t hurt me. Just here for me to use.” If you look up the early artwork, the main image was a wrench. A very phallic wrench. Sometimes a tool is just a tool. Sometimes, well…

I’ve always seen this as very possessively abusive like control issues and trauma. It very much reminds me of prison sex. Like the almost as If the singer isn’t singing it but that it’s what the abuser says do him. Whether that violator is the inflicter of the abuse or is his own abusive behavior or addiction is up for debate
