Skullz reacts to Opiate by Tool for the first time
Tool is an American rock band from Los Angeles. Formed in 1990... due to Tool's incorporation of visual arts and very long and complex releases, the band is generally described as a style-transcending act and part of progressive rock, psychedelic rock, and art rock. The relationship between the band and today's music industry is ambivalent, at times marked by censorship, and the band's insistence on privacy....Tool has won four Grammy Awards, performed worldwide tours, and produced albums topping the charts in several countries.

So glad you listened to all of Opiate EP! If you're looking for more songs to listen to before tackling Fear Inoculum, I definitely recommend you check out the rest of Salival; there are some great tracks on that one such as their cover of Led Zeppelin's "No Quarter"; its one of those covers, similar to NIN's "Hurt" sung by Johnny Cash, where it is arguably better than the original. Hope you give it a listen!

"Opiate" is most likely a reference to the Karl Marx quote "Religion is the opiate of the masses" and early MJK was very hostile towards religion in general (he mellowed as he grew older). So while a lot of later Tool songs have double or even triple meanings behind the lyrics, this early stuff is pretty straightforward. It's a screed against people who trust in their invisible sky friends to get through life and how they are taken advantage of by religious leaders. I don't think the drug definition is used here other than the reference to Marx. The hidden track is much more drug forward :)

That pretty much happens to everyone, almost. You start as a militant Atheist, then you wake up one day in your late 20s/30s. That youthful 10ft tall and Bulletproof feeling is gone, and you start having friends and classmates die. Ultimately, the idea of Religion (that you perhaps found intriguing) starts creeping in more and more. That is how it went for me at least. I started in a Christian Reform School Kindergarten as a Kid and decided to go home at recess one day (we lived right across from the Kindergarten/Elementary). I just wasn't feeling it. I transferred to the regular Public School System, and didn't look back. I still have the Bible they gave me. I found the Book of Revelations fascinating, and always loved Movies like The Sign, Stigmata, Constantine, etc.

I love this song. It sounds like Ænima era Tool and probably could have made the cut for it. It's funny but can also be listened to seriously. The musicianship is immaculate but still has that anger. Almost like the metamorphosis and cleansing they've endured (Ha! Get it!) coming to fruition. I love the use of religious imagery in this song. So many biblical idioms all used to call out the disgusting practice of blaming people's misfortune on a lack of faith. Preying on the desperate and broken not by lifting them up and supporting them but to point the finger at the victim. I'm not sure if I'm over thinking it but the line "he has needs. Like I do. We both want. To **** you" sounds like a shot at predatory people of faith. It feels like a stretch though as the theme starts to loose focus Great reaction again. It's been a real treat to see someone have as much enjoyment from this group as I have

Opiate has always been my favorite song on this EP. It really hit home for me, especially in my teen years. Religion was never a big part of my life and I identified myself as an Atheist when I was around 8 years old. At 12, my family moved from the SF Bay Area to a small town in the Northwest US where most people belonged to one particular religion. I was never shy about being an Atheist and we all know how mean 12-13 year old kids can be. I was bullied mercilessly for nearly 2 full years because I wasn't in their church. This song spoke to me in a way no song had before. In a way it made the bullying more tolerable. It helped me laugh at them. Its amazing how a silly song can make such a difference in a kids life. Its one of the many reasons I love music and especially Tool as much as I do.

The look on a millennials face when they discover "hidden track" is priceless. See, that end was the hidden track. In the 80s and 90s, band would include these usually after 5 minutes or so of dead air after the final track on a cd as kind of a wink to the fans. Some bands would do something tricky where they'd have a bunch of dead air tracks at the end of the cd followed by their hidden track. It's typically something fun and kooky and not at all serious or fitting with the tone of the CD. Check out the hidden track on Green Day's Dookie CD. Not all CDs had them but when you found them, you felt like you found some really cool secret.

Here goes. Good song, but I'm missing the writing Maynard found in later songs. It's hard to pin it. I get the message in Opiate, but I don't feel it. Maybe too straightforward. When Maynard yells, "...to rape you!" it's jarring, but expected like a jump scare in a horror movie. He's also singing directly to "you" but it doesn't feel as universal, relatable, deep, or as engaging. When I listen to, "WHY can we not be sober?" I could talk 10 minutes on the delivery of "Why?" The different angles of suffering in Prison Sex derives empathy I never fully considered. Or the sweet, "Twice as clear as heaven... Twice as loud as reason." Followed by "Half as..." when the undertow hits. Forward. Let's go!

Christ defined as the symbol of the Cross. Not as an instrument of torture, but as the intersection between Kairos and Chronos; to have the internal experience of revelation be bright enough to blind. That’s REAL apotheosis. Not some middleman spewing out his rhetoric. It’s a song that is always relevant. To me, that’s the most important element of their choosing this song to rerelease.

I am surprised you didn't mention Maynard's relationship with his mother during this reaction. Perhaps his anger and disdain for organized religion (in this case his mother's Christianity) and how it can chew people up and spit them out has something to do with the lyrics here; that's my take at least. Sure, he later came to understand what she got out of it (which is about where I am at with regards to my religious mother, via a similar journey to Maynard's), but back then he absolutely despised the church she belonged to, and probably extended that feeling to religion in general.

This is where I started. Maynard hating religion, and taking quotes from the atheist Karl Marx. The betrayal he must have felt from the people around him professing “the faith” must have been traumatic. That’s the only explanation for this bitter straw man. Lateralus came out, and I believed he had turned a corner. Reflection is certainly a song about faith. Then came Judith from APC. A song mocking those close to him. He’s such an asshole sometimes (most of the time). But wait, 10,000 Days come out, and he invokes the Father and the son to carry his mother home??! Man, even if he calls the congregation Judas that’s an improvement! Fast forward to Fear Innoculum, and he is “exorcizing” and calling out evil. It took a long time, but Maynard came around.
