Joe, I sure appreciate it when you go cheap and don't bother with the labels. When I pull in at the gas station and pump my daily $3-4 in change into the tank. I am always able to throw the bundles into the bed of my truck while the pump runs and there is always alot less questions when I sell them to the campgrounds, if the bundles dont have those pesky labels! Again...much appreciated!👍

Joe, I really enjoy and appreciate your channel, and I like your philosophy about your firewood business. You are an eccentric guy, and thats a big plus in my book. As you probably know the world is pretty much into the "sustainability" thinking. Like it or not, but its there we goes. I would like to see some bundling machine with like hemp rope lines instead of the plastic wrap. Would like to hear your thoughts about it. (then the clients can smoke the rope too...)
@ohiowoodburner
@ohiowoodburner 6 ай бұрын
haha... I agree with you and I find sustainability and its creative problem solving fascinating. Yes plastic wrap runs counter to that but is where I am now. I think rope would work, I would have to better understand the process but i will be sticking with the wrap for now.

As my retirement gig.lol don't worry lm no thert to you as I'm in Aiken SC. (NUBBYS wood shack). But i had a thought about your new bundler. After you start loading it with the first few sticks, what if you pulled the wrap across then stacked the rest on top and it should hold it self.

Hi Joe - it's Big Rodders in Ireland. I'm surprised on a machine at that price point that it doesn't have an auto stop for the wrapper mechanism. I'm intrigued by the swivelling back where the logs are placed. Does it serve any specific purpose are is it just the inevitable result of the overall design. If you can't get a wing nut to fit the wrapper tension bolt you could easily weld two ears onto the existing nut to facilitate hand tensioning. Finally, you could G clamp a suitable receptacle to the top of the machine to hold your labels. In the meantime - Keep on Bundling!

This is my observation. It may or may not be accurate. Firewood processing is the vehicle that carries all the ancillary goods and services OWB provides. Yes, a profit can be made with stacked cellulose, but it's the accompanying stack of offerings that provide the highest margins. This is true for rock(or wood) stars who have expanded their audience. Love your channel.

Joe, I found it interesting that you talked about the tension of the wrap to the bundle. I worked for a Fortune 50 beer company for 35 years and in the 90's we installed high speed wrap machines that wrapped full pallets of beer. Our corporate budget for rolls of wrap was in the millions. I was assigned to research ways to reduce the amount of wrap we used. What I found was it is important to measure the "force to load" of each wrapper. That "force to load" pulls the wrap so it is tight to the load and if the machine is calibrated correctly, I found you use less wrap per pallet because the wrap is being stretched, which resulted in a reduction of the number of rolls we had to purchase yearly. The wrap is designed to be stretched to its max. Although your wrap budget would be relatively small, because you are using "bundles" as a side hustle. However, a person making only bundles and buying his firewood by the cord and producing bundles for sale, would most likely find that it would be beneficial to make certain he is stretching that wrap to its max. The process is simple to measure the Force to Load of the wrap. Sorry for the long business practice dissertation but wrap is very expensive because it is a petroleum-based product.
@ohiowoodburner
@ohiowoodburner 6 ай бұрын
I loved your post Larry. I am totally aligned with your insight. I have gravitated away from blown wrap and now use cast and also I kept trying lighter gauge wrap. I am now using 90. I find it stretches with less torque on the arm of the machine and I use just three wraps per bundle. I notice others on YT and they all seem to be more than 3 wraps.
@paydrow707
@paydrow707 6 ай бұрын
What brand of wrap do you use? I tried a lot on amazon. I usually use 90 but trying to find the best bang for the buck for the firewood bundles. Some i have to use 5 or 6 turns.
@larrysmith2481
@larrysmith2481 6 ай бұрын
@@paydrow707 You might need to increase the tension to stretch the wrap out more. Stretch wrap is designed to stretch out then it contracts making a very tight bundle. With stretch wrap more is not better, less wrap with the correct "force to load" will not only save you money but it will give you a tighter bundle. Just a thought...

Hi again Milo, I am always amazed. I owned a video/teleproduction company thirty years ago. Productions took a really huge investment in equipment and a full crew to operate it. And editing suite costs were astronomical! I am just blown away by the quality of the videos you and others are capable of producing nowadays with just a GoPro and desktop editing software! And talent? We used to have to hire AFTRA union actors, but you do as good of a job as any on-camera actor I've ever seen. And you do it unscripted! Inexpensive equipment and youtube have shown that the days of big buck produtions, that excluded all but the well-heeled, are a thing of the past. You, my friend, are doing a superb job! Keep up the good work, buddy. 😊 Shalom/gw PS your comment about the sun's position, with respect to subject is spot on.

Talk about selling bundles,…that’s what my thoughts have been, in regards to selling firewood. I haven’t started my firewood business yet. My plan was to start out by delivering bundles, and also selling them at a roadside stand along with loose stacks. I honestly don’t know if I wanna get into doing bulk deliveries. The people in the area sell firewood too cheap for me to think about competing with. I’ve already gave plenty of thoughts about selling to the campgrounds and the local stores that you mentioned. The couple of bundle sellers that I’ve seen, use plastic shopping bags to “bundle” their wood in. It’s all split for the most part,…but of varying lengths. Like you said,…it’s all in the details. The presentation will speak for itself. I think that most people just want something that is consistent, from someone that they can depend on when it’s all said and done.

@@ohiowoodburner it’ll probably be a while. We bought 11 raw acres up in the White Mountains of Arizona. Planning to build on it, and use an OWB to heat with. But it’ll take some time to get set up to start selling. I just need a decent saw, splitter, and a bundler. The logs will be delivered,…therefore I won’t have to go out and source it from the forest. I’m really looking forward to it. I feel like it’s something that’s fun to do, and make a little money on the side. I will definitely keep you posted. I appreciate the content that you put out as well.

Winter sales are alot better than summer. I give kindling bundles to new people who order firewood from me so they call me when they need firewood again. I sell some smoking wood chunks in bags and some as bundles. I take firewood to 8 different campgrounds but most often they want loose campfirewood. I tried convincing one owner to sell my bundles instead of my loose firewood but he rather sell it loose even after I showed him how nice my bundles are made. I use...and am a strong proponent for 90 gauge Cast wrap. Don't use anything else...trust me! I also think .75 cf is the best size. These in the vid today are somewhat larger

Move your shrink wrap towards the motor. You can see in the video that the wrap isn't centered on the firewood.

Hi Nick. Here is a recent vid I made discussing this topic kzfaq.info/get/bejne/kNtdfqaezLGwe2Q.html One of the machines I bought came with a case of blown wrap. I hate it! but since these bundles were not having the labels inserted I just used the blown to get rid of it. Thanks for watching Nick

So, question is, at time of delivery to the store do they pay you? Seems obvious, but some places may want to do a commission on each bundle sold...?
@ohiowoodburner
@ohiowoodburner 6 ай бұрын
I have no consignment agreements. Retail places call that "Pay on Scan." The prob there is I would be eating the theft etc. Whatever you want to do is ok but the places I do business with cut me a check

I'm not good with numbers but my calculations are 40 bundles is darn near a 1/4 cord. I can buy a cord of firewood up the road for $180 so that is approx $45 for the wood

So why plastic wrap? Here in VA i have noticed that people here have been buying more of our wood in the mesh bags. The reason for the switch is got tired of them retaining water and they look nasty after a rain storm.

Approximately how many bundles can you make per facecord? I can get $5 a bundle near me. If I can make 35 bundles per facecord then it would be worth the extra time and effort verses bulk where I can get $125 per facecord.
@ohiowoodburner
@ohiowoodburner 6 ай бұрын
In theory you should be able to make 43 1cf bundles or 57 .75cf bundles. That is never the case bc you always will have sticks that aren't wrappable, knots, crooked, rotted etc.

Why don't you add some of your kindling pieces so that the customers have a ready to light and burn bundle. That would set your bundles apart from the rest.
@jontimmerman8208

My thoughts also, include enough for a couple of fires. When you use labels you could have on them “kindling included”. Of course you could charge a premium price

I don't want to sound flippant but there is no reason to add anything to a bundle. They sell fast and there really is no need to offer anything like an enticement etc to get them to move. Thanks Beenthere!

@stevenm.2796 6 ай бұрын
You're missing been's point, kindling would make it a light and burn bundle. Without kindling, a wad of paper, or charcoal lighter fluid you have no chance of having a campfire with the campfire bundle you just bought. You could make some with and some without kindling. I myself, given the option, would buy the one with kindling over one without kindling. even if it were a buck or two more. @@ohiowoodburner
