All scrap yards I deal with take the electric motor copper as #2 with strings and all. I put the copper windings with my #2 solder/dirty/painted copper.
@Okiescrapper3 жыл бұрын
I asked my yard about the strings and they to me they had to be removed, I do let a few go though, and yes it is #2 copper as it has a thin insulation on it. Thanks for stopping by

Hi good video. The guy you got the tool idea from is Scrap farm. Also another way to deal with aluminum is bolt cutters. I have a 42" set of Ridgid cutters and I clean a lot of aluminum up with them. They will go through thinner cast and other aluminum like nothing. Great work I love the air hammer method!

Love taking motors apart! Any ideas on how to get the copper out of the large size motors?
@Okiescrapper3 жыл бұрын
if you are talking about the big motors with the cast iron shell, I have done a few of them years ago, and I would take a 8 lb. sledge hammer to them and break the cast iron to get the stator out, some videos where they use hydraulics to crack and split the shell. like a hydraulic shop press, and a splitting wedge.
@kluafoz3 жыл бұрын
Hey Okie what do you do with that part in the middle of the motors that's half cast half steel?
@Okiescrapper3 жыл бұрын
I put them in with my short iron
@Fusako82 жыл бұрын
I do have an air chisel. I prefer hammer and chisel for precision. Almost never get out the pneumatic tools. Besides, I'm going to be doing a bit of blacksmithing, so getting used to swinging a hammer for hours is useful.

On that first motor I would have hacked that shaft in an instant with the angle grinder and a cutoff wheel.

Some electric motors (known as 39 frame type) used in a/c and air circulation were wound with aluminum, starting back in the 70's and 80's. Not sure if they'd be worth the time to scrap out.
@Okiescrapper3 жыл бұрын
not if a guy was trying to make good money from scrap, but for the hobby scrapper they just like to get all they can and work for pennies per hour,
@TheStarforce22 жыл бұрын
I tried cutting heavy wire wraps of a transformer, it aint easy to cut that shit with a grinder and I have a big one
@Okiescrapper2 жыл бұрын
yes some stuff is hard to cut, the 7 inch grinder disk are much thicker then the 4 1/2 inch cutting disks, that could be why it was harder, may try a sawzall, Thanks for stopping by
@TheStarforce22 жыл бұрын
@@Okiescrapper I'll try the smaller one. Or bar.clamp it.to my.table and try the sawzall

Are there sometimes motors come across that are worth NOT scrapping? I'm told some motors are capable of MAKING electricity when moving in its opposite operating direction. People who live near streams or moving water could easily cut power bills from their lives forever, not to mention cut pollution down significantly with a good working vintage elec motor.
@Okiescrapper3 жыл бұрын
I was told the motors from treadmills make good generators, I think it is the motors that have the magnets that they use, I am sure there are videos on KZfaq that show how to make them

Are you in Oklahoma? I am in need of 4 motors (DIY electric car) so you get the idea of size and torque I need. I would be interested in travelling a modest distance(from OKC) to pick them up if you could set aside some motors you think might be useful. I'd pay you, lets ballpark it at 3x your predicted scrap value. I'd request 8, considering some may be burnt out, but I would take them all and do my own testing. I'm just assuming you're in OK based on the name "okie" and the red dirt on your property. *Edit*(9:13 And words, I hadn't gotten this far before posting. You should be able to contact me within KZfaq, or just reply here and I'll see it in my email; we can go from there. I found your channel a couple days ago looking for furnace designs and find your content very interesting and helpful. Thanks for your consideration. P.S. If you are not interested, a quick reply of "no thanks" would be appreciated so I'm not holding my breath.
@Okiescrapper3 жыл бұрын
yea I am in Blanchard, OK. what you are needing is dc motors and good size one's. you never know what I may pick up, people get and hang on to all kinds of things. I don't have any on hand but will keep an eye out for some good dc motors

we will have electric bicycle before we all have electric cars. they will pinch gas off or catch very high price
@Okiescrapper3 жыл бұрын
yeah I look for the very high price for gas. so for scrapping I would have to build a 4 wheel buggy with 2 electric motors, two wheel drive, and pull a light trailer. some of the electric bikes do 30 mph.
