This is film has been a pleasure for me to make as it concerns one of the most loved and enduring parts of the history of my home town of Barrow-in-Furness.
Furness Railway No. 3, more fondly known as ‘Old Coppernob,’ was one of the first four engines purchased by the Furness Railway Company in the mid 1840s. It is the only survivor of the four and is kept at The National Railway Museum in York. These engines hauled all the traffic on the railway over the first years of operation.
This is the story of Furness Railway No. 3 from its arrival by sea into a still quite rural Barrow and on to the present day.
If you now wish to watch the longer film about Furness Railway No. 20 please follow this link • 'The Great Survivor - ...
(The Furness Railway opened for goods and mineral traffic between Kirkby Slate Wharf and Barrow Pier on 3rd June 1846. Passenger traffic commenced on 24th August 1846 between Piel Pier and Dalton and on the Barrow and Kirkby lines in connection with steamer sailings between Piel Pier and Fleetwood.)

As a kid I loved old Coopernob, and I still love seeing it now. The only downside is that it doesn’t look quite at home in the great hall as it did in the station hall.

This is fabulous. I'd like to think my 3rd Gt Grandfather travelled on a similar engine and carriages from Maudland St, Preston to Kirkham station with the Preston Ringers for the opening peel of the new bells of St Michael's church 27th of May 1846. I've also an ancestor who was manager of the Brock Mill forge, Wigan where they built engines for locomotives in the 1800s.

Absolute awsome Sir, loved the 'creaking' and 'groaning' sound ambience at the disembarkation sequence. Magnificent, thankyou kindly.

Its been a while since we spoke!! Thank you for getting to this so soon and I'm very pleased that you are the first to tell me that you enjoyed it. If you have seen my last few film uploads you will know that Ive been getting involved with the Furness Railway Trust here in Preston. Im not very good at logging in here to see comments so you may have already commented on my FR No 20 film. I'll look now. BUT... I haven't shared the No 20 film anywhere yet myself, its just picking up views from the trust sharing it. So I deliberately made this coppernob film to be a lead in to then watching the whole of the Number 20 film. Thanks for this message. Please share the film wherever you like. Regards, Gary

Very interesting and well presented video. Would be helpful if you included the URL for the 'FR No 20' film.

Hi David. I shall send you the link in a moment for the FR 20 film. Your suggestion is correct, I should have included the link at the end of my Coppernob description for those who had taken time to read to the end!! My reasoning was this... I made the FR 20 film first and was going to include in it a short section on Coppernob. But Coppernob I soon realised needed its own film. The FR 20 film is longer and more detailed so I decided to put Coppernob out as a first taste teaser before I start to share FR 20 next weekend. Its been up for a while and been collecting views on its own and with the one share I did make to the Furness Railway Trust in Preston. Thank you for your comment and i hope you enjoy Furness Railway No 20. Link below

The subtitles could do with chucking out. Number 1. Then perhaps replacing with greater accuracy? How much is that to ask?

I didn’t put any subtitles on this film. Maybe subtitles of my narration have been generated for you by KZfaq without any input from me. So yes they are probably crap. If you refer to the text in bottom left corner of some photos they are Creative Commons photo credits. So, other than that an enjoyable film then.

after a little investigation you may have clicked a box in the bottom film bar which is labelled CC.This opens captions which it says are autogenerated by KZfaq. So click it again to turn them off. Or click the settings icon to its right to turn them off there as well. So KZfaq seems to create captions as it wishes for all films whether we like it or not. Hope you enjoy the film better now,.
