On September 11th, 1857, somewhere between 100 and 140 men, women and children were massacred in Utah at Mountain Meadows.
This is the story of that horrific event.
PS: Yes, we know the audio contains wind noise. This was filmed during the onset of a winter storm and it was unavoidable.

Wonderfully done video. I know that these don't bring the views that the firearm-related content does, but individuals like myself very much appreciate the time, effort, and personality you bring to the InRange channel with this content. My hope is that comments like this are encouraging to you all.

The Mormons were not "fellow countrymen". They were set on establishing Emipre, a theocratic empire, and being separate from the US> Mormon Utah was a Southern Democrat voting state. Keep this in mind when trying to ferret out what was Really going on when Buchanan sent the army to Utah.....He, Floyd, others were southerners and they Knew the Civil War was imminant. Thus Pres Buchannan and Floyd were trying to Weaken the North. It gets deep and ugly.

As someone who grew up in Utah in the 1990s /early 2000s I can attest to this event being largely glossed over in Utah History classes. I think a lot of people in Utah see any criticism of their church and it's past leaders as a direct attack on them without realizing that it's possible to criticize the vile actions of past LDS leadership without hating Mormons of today. I just wish the LDS church was willing to admit many of it's past deeds were less than noble, just as I wish the Catholic Church, US government or any other longstanding organization would admit.

For the most part it seems one must independently study religion to get the big picture. School won't go in depth about religious aspects beyond what is necessary to teach the lesson, because separation of church and state; And, church isn't there to dig up all the demons and share them, but instead to share their mission with you. So, you read all the stuff and read the diaries, see what has been publicly talked about and form a picture. You can get many of the answers from the LDS church, but you likely wouldn't get them at a local church or school. I can count a bunch of misdeeds (nothing like on this scale) that the LDS church has been party to, but almost all of them are history and the church has apologized and provided the truth (or prophecies sometimes) to allow them to move on and be part of today's world. Relatively speaking, pretty great church, though not perfect - Great people in my experience, very kind, caring, spends $40m/annually on welfare/humanitarian causes.

I think the issue is more that people draw conclusions that are far too over drawn without evidence. While it's clear that local church leadership fucked up here (they lead the millitia) it's also important to point out two things: 1) these people were not acting in roles of church leadership, but rather as officers of a civil organization, 2) the main body of the church leadership was unaware of the massacre until after it happened and did not order it. The fact that it happened doesn't surprise me given the history of the Mormon church and it's numerous clashes with locals from Kirkland to Navoo. This isn't the first time the Mormons made a millitia to defend against a hostile government. It is however the first time any such millitia committed a massacre. I think it's unfortunate that the state doesn't teach it better, but to be fair, no one teaches the history of massacre in the US, from any side. Natives of whites, whites of natives, religious massacres, etc. I think that the hesitation to teach such things is that it indicates that we all have a dark side, and maybe even good people can go very very bad.

Yeah man, The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints is super open about its history. You can go to their websites and they have tons of first hand documents that are digitalized and released all of the time. A lot of Mormon people have issues stomaching it because it goes so far against their values, but I would not say it is glossed over. There are professors at BYU that dig into the history and publish new findings on this stuff all of the time.

@@IlIlllIllIlIIIll Well, almost every religion today started as a cult off-shoot of something else. My Mormon friends weren't told NOT to be friends with me, but there was an obvious cultural divide that left me somewhat excluded socially for not being LDS. I don't think it necessarily meets all the definitions of a cult anymore and I think there's definitely a huge cultural difference between mormons living inside/outside of Utah.

Agreed. I learn new things about stuff I thought I had decent knowledge on, such as Karl informing us about 'slavery free' trade goods on one of the underground series. The goods cost more, but you knew you weren't supporting slavery because you bought the expensive 'slavery free' cotton, etc... I especially enjoy the vignettes, but that could be due to living in Utah where the 'wild west' wasn't too far back.

Senior church officials were so upset over this atrocity that they promptly returned the stolen property and kidnapped children to relatives in Arkansas and vigorously prosecuted the militia members for murder and rape (yep, they did that too per court testimony, since they were going to kill them anyway they reasoned). Oh wait, that's NOT what happened! Young ordered the stolen property sold for the benefit of the church, hid the kids, and hid the perps from justice, in most cases forever. Pure evil, the crime AND the cover up at the highest levels. Great video BTW. History isn't always easy or nice, but it should not be forgotten.

Like the Brigham Young letter showing up a day late, and the befitting justice that was issued to John Lee. I also like how you mentioned a little about some of the persecution that The Mormons went through. I love your Old West Vignettes! As a bloke from the Old World I often see a disregard for American history as insignificant, crude and altogether less nuanced than our own. Through some digging, some seminars offered at university and not the least because of your beautifully researched and topically diverse Old West Vignettes it is easy to see what the student of history already knows in his heart: humans act human and do so in whatever context they are encountered. It gladdens my stony heart, all encrusted from wading though the "Bloody History of Europe" for years, every time to see justice done to the nuanced aspects of New World history. To actually hear about the complicated matters, not to drown my mind in a superficial, still somewhat tainted by the idea of manifest destiny from both sides of the pond, simplified narrative. Plus I'm somewhat fascinated with the whole Deseret project of the LDS church since I'm ever so slightly connected to them (once removed, my oldest friend is a LDS follower). I don't post this every time, since it would really be... err... at the very least annoying, but you have my profound thanks for these little intriguing insights! Raoul G. Kunz

Thank you for the video guys. As an European I find this so different I can't help but be drawn to learn more about the frontier. I used to drive by a concentration camp every single day for a year when I was going to school. Really made me think. Probably contributed to my sensitivity. I think too many people around my age (20) are afraid to face the facts as they are and see the history for what it was, raw and not filtered through pages of books and through words of scholars. The numbers and reports are indeed important and hard to swallow sometimes. But actually walking inside a gas chamber and looking at the walls... something like that changes a man. Same with such massacres - being able to visit the place where innocents were slaughtered, it really is saddening, but also gives us the ability to see what we must not ever allow to happen again. Thank you again for bringing us this enlightening material. I do wish I could support you on Patreon, but I really do have a tight budget, least I can do is advertise you to my friends and watch every single video. Thanks again!

Thank you for the fair and unbiased portrayal of this story. As a Mormon it's rare to see people approach this story without a chip on their shoulder, looking to catagorically blame the whole church for the incident and lay the blood at the feet of people who don't deserve it. Clearly blame for this massacre must be assigned, but there is great nuance in this mistake. Would to God those people never suffered, but simple causes for this incident defy reason.
