Old West Vignette: Wyatt Earp murders Frank Stilwell

March 20th, 1882 -
Wyatt Earp chased Frank Stilwell over 100 yards over train tracks at the Tucson Train Depot and killed him at point blank range with both barrels of his shotgun.
Wyatt killed this man under the belief that he had been culpable in the murder of his brother, Morgan Earp, although there were no charges nor specific evidence to enforce that belief.
Wyatt Earp and others were indicted for murder in regards to this killing, and you can read the indictment here:

There are a lot of well written books on the subject and there is a minute by minute round for round account of the shooting from folks that saw it from a building across the street. The Book store in Tombstone has it all.

It's actually impossible to judge. We cannot go back in time and live the events. Stilwell may have run off his mouth around town, Earp may have gotten a good look at him during Morgan's murder. Context is everything and in this case, its missing or distorted by time. There has always been a thin line between justice and murder. It's really not my place to judge unless I'm drawing jury pay.

Exactly. If you see someone kill another person and then kill him later, without him posing a direct threat, you're still a murderer.

I work with a lot of developers as part of my job and it does seem to attract an unprofessional and "money over everything" kind of person. Usually people that already have money and see it as an easy way to get more..... and it really is as you can buy a track of land, spend a few bucks to get it subdivided, and sell for easy profit. That being said if you find a good developer/builder keep them close as they will be far more willing to take chances and create interesting spaces and communities.

I love your Old West Vignettes. My opinion of Wyatt Earp has somewhat shifted from these two videos about his killings. Regardless, now I want to see a video on firing both barrels simultaneously of a SxS shotgun. Great video. By the way, Bob Boze Bell is awesome. I remember him from the History Channel series Wild West Tech.

I love this content very very much just found it today but this is definitely something you should do more of! so many good old west stories and events, I personally have limited knowledge on these western topics but have always loved them and it started with Clint Eastwood the good the bad and the ugly when i was younger with my dad! awesome stuff karl as usual thanks man for putting effort and love for real history into your work.

When I think of Wyatt Earp, I remember the 1960's TV series with a clean shaven (i.e. no mustache) Hugh O'Brien as Wyatt Earp. A group of male singers singing a cappella at the beginning of the show and after the show, off camera, in the background, singing the theme song: "Wyatt Earp, Wyatt Earp, Brave, Courageous and bold; Long live his name and long live his glory and long may his story be told." He also had a tall sidekick deputy, called "Shotgun". Because the man's chief weapon was what looked like a 10 gauge double barrel shotgun. :-)

At the point where you do it by the book, dig Wheeler style grid squares, record the stratigraphy, document all the finds categorically and have them stored with references in the local heritage association for future research. You might also need some permits.

Context. Digging up recently deceased? Is it Forensic Archaeology for a purpose or is wanton looting for valuables? Digging up centuries plus old graves? Same thing. Like everything in life, context matters, and an identical act that is acceptable under one situation may not be under another. You know, like shooting someone with a double barreled shotgun. Is is self defense, or murder?

Except when a university now goes on a dig all items must be held and stored in-country. We're no longer living in the 19th century where it was a matter of splitting it 50-50 with colonial overlords. Also looters are not held to account for where they found what and in which condition, things like provenance and context don't really matter when all you're doing is hawking it to the highest bidder.

Once the surviving Earps moved away, they stopped getting into gun fights. The surviving Cowboys on the other hand continued to rob, rustle and get killed in gun fights. It was a war between two factions in tombstone. Trying to list either party as innocent or murderers is inappropriate.

Karl i really like your old west vignette series but i would like to make a request: when you made your first video about Wyatt while it defenetatly was interesting and informative,but as a European(Greek) most of the info got over why head, later i researched more about the events and now understand the videos. The request is if possible on old west videos to do a quick overview of the story behind the video's topic, assuming the total ignorance of topic from the viewer(for example saying as who Wyatt and Doc were what the cowboys were doing etc etc). Thanks again for those cool informative videos!

For his part, Ike Clanton claimed that he and Stilwell were in Tucson for a court appearance and that Stilwell disappeared from their hotel room that night and was found dead the next day.

A fascinating story. and some what poignant as my husband passed over on March 20th 2008 - exactly 100 year later. He had a passion for Cowboy films and stories even though he was British in the UK, as I am also a Brit. We have spent a brief time in Arizona and passed through Tuscon on the Amtrack Railroad. Interesting ... !

Murder is such a harsh word. The Cow-boys swore to kill the Earps and their friends, so, this was just a pre-emptive strike to prevent their own untimely deaths. Case closed. Great video as always.

These Old West Vignettes are always a highlight to have pop up on the feed! Apparently you had Co-Conspirator help with production on this one? Less tripod and more handheld adds to the storytelling. In my opinion the double barrel insert at 4:40 would've worked better with just the first angle, but it still a good idea in adding flavor. Thank you for the interesting content! Looking forward to Finnish Brutality videos, the match was awesome and it was good meeting you there.
