You could have mentioned Oedipus. The film's relation to Greek tragedy ties in nicely with your argument on retributive justice.

I just saw the US remake yesterday and was so disappointed what they have done to the original masterpiece. You barely recognize the movie and its intentions in the newer version.

Terry Pratchet says it best. In his book, the Hogfather, Death tells his granddaughter that as practice humans need to learn the little lies like fairies, magic, and superstition to learn the big ones like justice, mercy, and duty. To the universe such things are folly. Grind it down and sift it through the finest siv and you’ll never find an atom of justice and an atom of mercy. Such are nothing more than the Imaginings of humans to create order in an uncaring and chaotic universe. At least on the grounds of how i agree to it.

One of my favorite directors! Would love to see you make a video about the other films in the revenge trilogy. But my favorite film is Thirst and would also love a video about it.

If person A exerces revenge by killing person B and nobody knows person A did it, family/friends of person B can still exerce revenge... on person C, simply because they need someone to blame (like in Memento).

I've been wondering lately if there's actually no such thing as justice because the pain of the crime sticks with you, if not for life, for a long time.

To address the video itself, it is very tempting to take revenge or get back at someone, but since revenge (especially unjustified) begets more revenge, it is to be avoided; it takes more effort & energy to hate & nurse a grudge that it does to let go & move on with your life.

Depends on the person. For some, whether Justice, or revenge is served has no bearing on the rest of their lives. The initial injustice and grief, and or anger caused by it, destroys them. Sometimes it may depend on your own personal religious or philosophical beliefs. A person that believes God has pre ordained everything, or has caused an event to punish/test them may care little for the human agent in the injustice. Others who believe that God judges ultimately, will want to send the person to that judgement quicker. In this film, it seems that the act of revenge not only condemns the Avenger, but others in his path, and others he may care about as well.

and I'd say here, Oh Dae-Su doesnt have a lot of choice to move on. The life he knew is long gone, he has no family (.....that he knows of....), he's been framed for killing his wife and has been wanted by the law for years. The way I see it, Woo-Jin planned his revenge (and life) to end with Dae-Su's revenge and he had been priming him for it the entire 15 years. Did Dae-Su even have a choice?

I find that the point of the movie isn’t that revenge is bad, the rest of Park Chan Wook’s stuff also addresses that it’s not so simple. What you’ll find in all of Park Chan Wook’s stuff is that he opposes revenge at the expense of one’s self and misdirected revenge. In oldboy in particular, it’s a narrative about truth and where the desire for revenge can take you. It’s not really commenting on the morals of revenge, just showing it’s impact on the human mind and showing how muddied the waters can get once revenge extends into extremes. While I agree with your sentiment on punitive justice, I feel this is more your interpretation as a result of your opinions (which as far as I’m aware I also agree with just so you know I’m not trying to be a dick by saying so). Overall the film shows flaws in revenge but certainly isn’t anti revenge by any means.

Why does an act of justice need to be beneficial to the society?
@damascus21
@damascus21 6 жыл бұрын
When a person commits a crime, all of society has a grievance because that person violated a rule his society has collectively agreed to. An act that redresses that grievance on behalf of society is therefore definitionally an act of justice.

Brilliant analysis but - to quote you - one flaw in that line of thinking: what if the director and everyone involved did not intend the film to go that deep into meanings? This movie could very well be a success based solely on a simpler noir/mystery/whodunit platform. Korean revenge flicks may be just that

I don't really care what the director intended. This isn't a movie review channel. It's a philosophy channel. The movie is just the framework for discussing the real topic.

I liked the Japanese manga much more than the movie. The manga was far more subtle. There's no shock value incest plot. The ending is totally different and something most people won't understand. It's more about social anxiety and loneliness, and I've seen plenty of angry comments from people who couldn't relate, and wanted gross shock value instead.

I think this is one of those rare films, that is powerful enough that it gets some curious, about the manga, that would otherwise never read one. Also if the more intense and "crazy" scenes from the movie are what make it original for the viewer, than the manga might not hold up. How long is the Oldboy manga? I've had friends that love the Akira anime, and I tried to turn them on to the manga, but it was too dense a series for a couple of them. They weren't expecting so much more story from where the film ends.
