I honestly liked the show, I see why is problematic and stuff but it was funny. I don’t think it was mean to be serious, I think it was clearly a satire and I thought it was funny how every episode had a complete twist form the previous. I’ve watched other videos on the show and all they do is watch the FIRST episode which is stupid because they show is literally so so different in almost every episode...

Amen. The “problematic” and “cancel culture” that’s risen in the last few years really bothers me because I don’t think anything good or positive can come from absolutism. Life is all nuance and if we strip nuance out of our evaluation of culture/pop culture then how will we apply to our own lives? It’s kinda maddening and was happy to hear your thoughts on it. @Scott Teresi... Absolutism vs. Relativism = truth vs. lies... how can I say this? Essentially truth is just as real as lies, but only the truth is true. When someone tells you a lie, that is a real event and if you believe it, it becomes your reality, just like when someone tells you the truth, it is real and if you believe it becomes your reality. But in one scenerio your reality is only real and completely untrue... in the other scenerio your reality is actuality.

Thanks for outlining the positives of this show. I didn't think that it was as terrible as everyone was making it out to be. @shadypalmtree29895 жыл бұрын
Wasn't expecting to see you here. Though I'd have to disagree with you. I think both the premise and execution were perfect, it's to the time period that it came out it that was wrong. 10 years ago, Insatiable would have been a hit. It's exactly what Olivia said, all these arguments were coming out of left field because it's a time of high sensitivity and extreme pushing for equal representation. Not that equal representation isn't wrong, but it's just simply not something that can occur in every show... but it's ironic because this show had almost everyone in it., and people were still complaining. Imo, the show is great, funny, and actually has a good message, if people stopped just looking at the face value of the show and actually thought about it.
@liswane3 жыл бұрын
@@shadypalmtree2989 the time it came out isn't wrong, it's not like the creators had no idea what the general public thought. And do you really think 10 years ago people would've ever praised a show with a lesbian relationship front and center? No, it would've been criticized just as much, but for other reasons. Also, including minorities in the story doesn't equate to equal representation; just because the show had one trans character that only appears in one episode, as a disposable character, doesn't mean anything. The premise is good and intriguing, but the execution was sloppy at best. The message of "skinny isn't magic" gets drowned out by the fact that patty, the main character, keeps getting away with all the crimes she commits throughout the show. If skinny isn't magic, why is this girl getting away with murder and getting help from a man that only noticed and cared for her because of how pretty she was after losing weight?

They love to call bisexuality "heteroflexible". The reason? Because bi are sometimes with woman and other with men. It's like they think we should always date both genders at the same time, if not we are not really bisexuals.

I'm bi and have been told before that "bisexual people don't exist" including by my mom, who told me that people are "either straight, gay or confused." I was actually super excited about the Bobs' storyline and even happy to hear that line because clearly the writer's aren't biphobic (otherwise they wouldn't have written in a compelling bisexual character), they're actually acknowledging bisexual erasure, which is awesome. AND, he's not only bi, but also open to polyamory, and it's presented in an over-the-top and comedic way (fitting the tone of the rest of the show) but not mockingly or critically. In fact, it seemed quite positive to me, even if the thruple didn't work out. This is the kind of representation that I would LOVE to see more of. In terms of positive reprentation, polyamorous bi/pan people pretty much only have Sense8 and this subplot from Insatiable.

i actually watched this show from a purely analytical standpoint and these were my takeaways: 1) the show does have some damaging themes but not in the way people like to say, it’s mostly by just not discussing those themes. it doesn’t actively take a homophobic or fat-shaming stance or anything like that, and i wouldn’t even say indirectly. but for example, you watch someone have an eating disorder and there isn’t any significant amount of information provided about eating disorders when there are ways to incorporate information organically (see certain scenes in netflix show “atypical”) 2) it’s just not a very good comedy. it’s mostly just sexual innuendos and words that sound funny and jokes you’d imagine seeing on facebook. idk, i don’t know why they decided to incorporate comedy. it would have been good as a drama. sure, comic relief, but it’s categorized as a comedy, which i just have to disagree with. however, several jokes did land and i noticed most of the jokes i laughed at were from bob armstrong. 3) a lot of the characters WERE written well. and they approached the topic of being gay very well. that’s all i’m gonna say here because you covered it lol 4) the ending is really intriguing, but i did find it sort of hard to get through every other episode of the season. i will watch season two, though, simply because i believe it’s taking a turn and could pick up from here. essentially, i think season one was the set up to what could be the more central plot. anyway, i don’t think the show deserves the hate it’s getting, but i don’t think it’s a great show either. i do hope the writing can get better because i don’t think the writing was stellar. but i think this could be a diamond in the rough. thanks for coming to my TED talk lol

That show is not melodrama, it's farce. If it were melodrama the complaints about it might be valid, but as farce it's not supposed to make sense. It's showing the absurdity of how life is by overstating that absurdity.

thank you. i really needed this. i hated feeling guilty for enjoying a show that everyone shat on me for enjoying. this is what i would try to explain to people and you did it so eloquently... thank you for verbalizing my thoughts.

I wrote a paper about this show and why I think people *actually* hate it (misogyny against its protagonist, but who's surprised?), and I must say, these are some of the best talking points about why the series is important and interesting! I think the most important thing is that the viewer is clearly not supposed to take any of it ~seriously~ because it's purposefully SO far over the top. How could anyone take any of this content literally, when every resident of the town dresses like a neon cupcake? Even Patty's bullies are cartoonishly evil, and you're right -- we are never, ever meant to be on their side. Great job of explaining and dissecting that sheet cake scene, too! Loved this.

I didn’t like insatiable too much but I feel like any complaints about it being any sort of phobic or racist or lacking in diversity are kind of unwarranted. It was a while ago but it seemed like there was more diversity than most shows I’ve watched. If anything it was excessive and in your face about it to the point where it sort of took away from the show, although I guess that was the point, it just wasn’t for me. I’ll probably get a lot of hate for saying that but I’m not a huge fan of over dramatic shows and this just wasn’t my cup of tea.

I haven’t seen the show and have no intention of seeing the show, but I feel like I definitely get why people would get upset about it. Call-out culture has become such a huge thing the last couple of years, and I will never stop preaching about how unnecessary, extra, and harmful it can be. Thank you for addressing this. I was also just wondering if the accusations were true, but I don’t like Netflix originals enough to give it a shot myself and now I don’t have to!

If you don’t skip the credits on the birthday episode they actually continue the audio so you hear patty crying as she continues to eat. I liked that touch because I feel like it showed how patty felt spiraling back into binging.

I love that the show never sugar coats its topics. There were a lot of things that made me laugh and cry when I related to some of them, especially that they never pulled away from the real pain people feel going through in these situations unlike what most tv shows due usually so that they won't cause any controversy.

i think it's possible to like debby and dislike insatiable. my main issue is the writing and production of the show. it kinda sucks. jokes fall flat and the satire misses. the tone and delivery of jokes don't mesh well with what is meant to be taken seriously. i think there is potential but it isn't there yet. to me its a trashy sitcom who's trying to be too serious and too goofy at the same time.
@yanaprodanova27605 жыл бұрын
blinkfilms1 honestly i agree completely. i never really cared about it being "problematic," it just seemed altogether not written well and the storylines felt very convoluted and uncohesive. i got bored after 3 or 4 episodes.

ia, i feel like my issue is one minute it seemed like satire with jokes about paedophiles and such, then you had more heartfelt moments like her struggling with body image and binge eating and nonnie with her sexuality...i think i would've preferred it if it was a more serious show overall and the storylines flowed better, because i think they tried to fit way too many into 13 episodes.

I watched the whole thing and I was like "It's not bad but kind of crazy and all over the place." but now you pointed out things that opened my eye that this show is exactly about how crazy life could get but you still have to understand your situation to move forward. It shows bad examples to reflext on the things you shouldn't do and it really does communicate with people. Now I'm impressed. (also sorry if I write something wrong I'm hungarian and not really good at speeches especially in languages othee than hungarian) I loved the video and you did really well in protecting the show.

omg. thank god I watched this video. I was weary to watch Insatiable, as I'm currently recovering from an eating disorder & I didn't want to trigger myself back into a relapse by watching the show. But after seeing your video I decided to give it a try. I'm only 5 episodes in, but the way they handle various social topics (eating disorders, LGBTQ+, etc.) is amazing and honestly very empowering. It really does bring to light that no matter HOW someone looks, they can be going through various mental obstacles (like binge eating even though you're "thin"). It's so important that topics like this are talked about, and I encourage people to give the show a try!!!

I'm glad that you made this video. I was getting sick and tired of just hearing negative things from people who seemed to not have seen it. Sure, it has it's moments, and it isn't perfect, but there is far worse out there, and I enjoyed how crazy it got. It was supposed to be crazy and dramatic and satirical and nonsensical. Thats the charm of it.

i watched this show 4 years ago and i still think about it a lot as someone who struggles with restrictive and binge eating disorders. It was the first time I saw a former fat person-now skinny-still struggle with binge eating, despite their weight loss. id never seen it before and it really spoke to me. i understand why people dont like the show and thats fine, but it will always have a special place in my heart.

Wow thank you for this, it's so good. I watched Insatiable when it came out because I love Debby Ryan and i wanted to see if it was worth all the hate. There was things I didnt agree with in it, but there was so many good things in it. No one I know has watched it, so I havent been able to discuss the show. But also Donald choy was the underrated start of insatiable, he deserved so much better🙏 Love your content Olivia ❤

As a recovered anorexic (pls read in ContraPoints voice, if you know her), when I saw all the mad comments under the KZfaq trailer for the show I was just smh. Even if the only content of the show was her becoming skinny through a liquid diet real fast it still wouldn’t cause eating disorders. People who are easily triggered already know they shouldn’t watch this and if they are this easily triggered (which I won’t judge) they shouldn’t be on the internet at all bc if you’re that unwell still you will be triggered by pretty much any slim person you see. Just my 2 cents and great vid!

I literally binged watched Insatiable in one day. I didn't do the homework I was supposed too. I'm not even sorry. (It made me listen to twenty one pilots less that day and that shows how BEAUTIFUL Insatiable is.)

I'm so glad you brought up the birthday cake scene. As someone has dealt with a similar issue I found that scene heartbreaking cause I could feel and understand Patty's pain. It was that scene that made me fall in love with the show and everything it forced people to watch and notice. It was uncomfortable because it was the truth. And I will be repeating "skinny isn't magic" till the day I die.

Your description of the *TW* binge eating scene made me think of that one scene in the movie A Ghost Story, where one of the main characters is grieving and there is no music and she just sits on the kitchen floor and eats like an entire pie or something is also very real and I think it’s portrayed very well too. The themes of the movie aren’t related to that but I do recommend the movie (it’s very slow but about time passing and existential questions for the most part).

I pretty much agree with most of this. It's not the greatest show I've ever seen but it had me laughing harder than any show has in a long time (especially the three-way thing with the two Bobs and Alyssa Milano). Even if it is problematic, it's okay to enjoy problematic things, as long as you can recognize the problematic aspects.
