A lot of reactors did not recognize Oikawa in his causal clothes and glasses due to this some fans thinks this is proof that the Clark Kent disguise for Superman really works.

Iwaizumi is RIGHT THERE in a jean jacket over a hoodie absolutely SERVING LOOKS and Oikawa in glasses is what gets the attention. 😭The minute Iwa stepped over the row and dropped down beside Oikawa is the moment I forevermore became an Iwa stan. (I do also love Oikawa in glasses but Iwa in a jean jacket changed me as a person)

An interesting thing about Shirabu (Shiratorizawa's setter) is that he did what Kageyama wasn't able to do. He got to Shiratorizawa on academic merit only, got on the volleyball team, and by his second year he's a starting setter. On sheer determination. You got to give some props to him for that.

This is why I love Sarah's reactions. Most Haikyuu reactors I've seen don't understand or give much notice to Shirabu's plight about his "mistake". They're usually "Oh that's old school coaching" or "It happens" and than move on. But with Sarah having seen it with her own eyes knows exactly how that feels like. It's rather refreshing.

What I really love about this series is even with the questionable (borderline unrealistic plays) there is almost always a follow-up to ground it back into reality. Most sports anime devolve to fantasy-like moves that are purely impossible LOL! I'm glad you called it out though, because even as a non-player the first time I saw that I asked "Is there really enough time to do that????"

There's actually a story about Oikawa getting those glasses: he was at some store, thinking about Seijou's loss to Karasuno and how it's not the end for him or anything, ended up accidentally thanking 2 girls whose conversation he accidentally eavesdropped on for helping him realize it, and then pretended to mistake them for staff by taking those glasses x) That's when he also decided to go watch this game after all

I'm DYING at Sarah thirsting over Oikawa with glasses, oh my god 😂🤣 Also, I'm really glad you acknowledged what is honestly probably Hinata's single biggest strength. It's not the freak quick; it's the fact that he literally works harder than anyone else on the court, every single time. It's been a while since they really highlighted it, so it gets easy to take it for granted, but his stamina, effort, and dedication are way more integral to his value as a player than his jumping ability or skill. And Suga was right; there's no need to worry about Ushiwaka's comments getting to him by this point. By now, if he were the type to let comments like that get him down, he wouldn't be here.

I was wondering what your take will be on Shirabu, the shiratorizawa setter. Not wanting to control everything - interesting attitude isn't it? Does any setter at the pro level have this kind of attitude? also shout out to Oikawa and Iwa for coming to match, passion for the sport and competitive spirit!!! All the strategies that go into this game, especially with Hinata's blocking this episode, I am always amazed at Furudate sensei, how is he able to create this deeply character driven story but at the same time design the game/points in such a way that it's a gradual improvement in the level of game, in the techniques shown by different players of different levels, yet keeping true to the sport and not overwhelming the audience, especially the non volleyball audience. He is a great author!!

The episode title doesn't specifically say that it's Karasuno vs Ushijima. Shiratorizawa is a team of strong individuals, while Karasuno is a team that mostly relies on combinations and teamwork.

I think that Shirabu’s backstory is trying to highlight that he gained this mentality as setter because he admires and sees Oikawa an ideal setter. His team couldn’t rival with Oikawa’s well-orchestrated team. But getting to see that the sheer strength of Ushijima could win over Oikawa was what made him aspire to be a “supporting” setter for such strong individuals in Shiratorizawa. Love your reactions! They always make my day :)

This season of Haikyuu is not only peak anime, is peak sports tv. If you're feeling goosebumps right now, all I can say is that you're in for a T R E A T.

I do really appreciate how Haikyuu appreciates how much teammates affect each-other. I've definitely been on teams where some teammates would make condescending remarks doing games and it is sad, because they were just making the team worse. Haikyuu showing that this can also be applied in the opposite direction is very encouraging.

I think the interesting thing with Shirabu's mentality is that while you said it wouldn't be the attitude that you would want in your setter, if you look at the kind of team that the Shiratorizawa coach, Washijo-sensei, likes to build, Shirabu is actually an excellent fit. He may not be the right fit for any other team, and definitely wouldn't be the right setter for Karasuno or Seijoh, but he fits the Shiratorizawa system and mentality absolutely perfectly.

While Tsukki's moment from last episode is probably still my favourite part of the series completely (Despite having read and finished the manga too) there are definitely some moments in the next season that are just as impactful.

Thank you Sarah for explaining Karasuno's strategy of aiming their serves at Reon to restrict him; even after reading/watching this arc of Haikyuu so many times, as a non-volleyball player, I never really understood why they did so, just accepted it. This is why I love watching your reactions. Not only do you immerse in the story and in each and every character's backstory and development, but you also take the time to explain volleyball concepts and strategies to us

The "Slap yourself" that Shirabu does actually works in real life ngl. I slap myself as well sometimes when I feel less motivated. Kinda clears mind like some tunnel vision.

I enjoy your breakdowns, and useful info on volleyball. But you getting invested into the characters growth and enjoying THE OTHER TEAMS backstory. Someone getting as emotional over the team becoming tighter knit! Makes me feeling like getting emotional over it is just fine haha. Excited for more reacts, and you get to see more awesome moments, this anime is so good.

The stage play (sort of like a theater performance) of Karasuno vs Shiratorizawa was as incredible as the anime! It's so epic especially the opening, the character introductions, and the ending.

That was a great show of Hinata being number one decoy, and also Tendou almost guessed it wont be Hinata hitting but Tanaka instead. Kageyama's "dont you dare get worn out now" was also pretty damn epic, and it made me tear up.

I was looking forward to your reaction to Oikawa's appearance, and it did not disappoint in the slightest. :) I love when Ohira tells Goshiki those encouraging words; I know that when I played, team encouragement went a long way to building my confidence (especially at that time in my life, when I had very little confidence in myself to begin with). The haiku in Haikyuu! will never cease to be my favorite of Furudate-sensei's uses of wordplay. I'm so impressed with how they seamlessly weave in literary humor into a story about sports. As someone who loves sports in general and is a former literature student and former volleyball player, it makes me feel seen as a reader. Even among my scholar peers, there's this air of "sports aren't much," and I really dislike it immensely, and Haikyuu! as both literary and visual text is proof that you can love both and live in both worlds.

Ushijima is straightforward. Haha, like Iwaizumi and Oikawa in season 2 where they were frustrated that Ushijima is right about only one team going to national and it pisses them off. Or when Hayato (Shiratorizawa's libero) pointed out Ushijima was being genuine after Goshiki challenged him and all he replied was "Do your best." In that flat tone of his...does cause people to misinterpret or be mad about how blunt he is because how would anyone reply to straight facts?

Hinata’s jump, passion and positive thinking are great. But the most scariest thing of Hinata is his stamina. Basically he has endless stamina. He’s surely a monster.

Btw, the whole "Ushiwaka" nickname is because of a famous samurai (Ushiwakamaru) known for a certain legend in which he jumped from boat to boat on a battle. Ushiwaka is strong and has high jumps (so it matches those aspects)

I think Shiratorizawa is a really interesting example of how teamwork can manifest in may different ways. When we're told about Shiratorizawa and we hear about their simple 'addition' of strong players and their reliance on Ushiwaka, we assume this will be a one man team who wins even without strong teamwork or bonds between players, but that's actually not at all what we get. In Volleyball, no matter how good the spikers are, they can't spike without a receive, and their spikes are limited by the quality of their set. It's not really possible for a team to be good because of their Ace alone, even if it can look that way on the surface. When Shirabu is talking about 'power volleyball', he's more referring to overwhelming an opponent head to head rather than going around as a setter, if that comparison makes sense? Kageyama can set well enough to give his spikers incredible power, but his greatest talent is his ability to set anyone from anywhere; a talent that literally carries Karasuno through every match. However, this not only puts a huge amount of strain on Kageyama, it also makes his setting unpredictable for both his enemies AND his allies. Rather than simply set for Asahi when in a pinch, Kageyama is much more likely to try a trick play using Hinata or his right side, or even go for a dump. That's not to say he DOESN'T use Asahi that way, just that it wouldn't be his first instinct; Kageyama is a super agressive setter who believes (quite rightly) in his own ability to tear apart blocks with incredible combination attacks. Shirabu is equally assertive, but in that he will always ALWAYS let his hitters do the shining, not him. He won't force everyone to jump as decoys, won't set up trick plays in a pinch. He'll simply give Ushiwaka the best possible set and watch him obliterate the opponent NO MATTER WHAT they stack up against him: overwhelming them head to head, see? On the surface that sounds almost cowardly, but part of being a team player is understanding the needs of your teammates. This strategy would be fatal for Karasuno, but relying on trick plays would be fatal for Shiratorizawa. The two teams are very different but both are made of players leaning on each other to get stronger, just in different ways. It's quite a poetic and mindful mentality to accept your lack of control over a situation. At the end of the day, you can only do your best and see what the outcome is; if it's a success, then great! If it's failure, you at least know you did your best at that moment, and you can analyse what can make your best 'better' at your leisure.

Another reactor I watched called Keishin a trash coach compared to his grandfather and instantly wanted Gramps on the court as the coach instead. For some reason I felt attacked lol. Thanks for pointing out what a great adjustment Ukai made, he's doing a fantastic job in his first year of coaching.

I think, in some ways, Ushijima sees Hinata as an opposite. Shiratorizawa's team is built around him because he is the focal point of their power and what their main game plan revolves around while, in his mind, Karasuno is built around covering Hinata's weaknesses.

I think the steps are a few more than normal for Hinatas block but just a couple extra steps works really well for verticality in basketball when going for a block. If you jumped like a block for volleyball you got dunked on mostly so its not completely unrealistic besides the time you have to physically do it

I got a bit of whiplash when I first watched the show when set 3 just zoomed by in like half an episode, lol. And Sarah's disgust at Tendo's "Miracle boy" celebration made me actually laugh out loud.

I don't know how this show is so good at setting up play after play. You really feel the momentum building and stopping and the fight from each side. And they animate them getting more and more exhausted. At a certain point you just get engrossed in this animated match happening.

Actually, I think we can pretty much say for sure that there was nothing more to Ushijima's remark to Hinata, simply because Ushijima doesn't have a brain for mind games. My boy takes even jokes literally, there is no space in his brain to think about mind games :D I love how the manga skimmed through the third set in like 3 pages or so, showing that if this was a best-of-3 match, Karasuno would be destroyed. Also, fun little fact about Shirabu - he's the only one on the team who is at Shiratorizawa on an academic scholarship. The rest has sports scholarships.

Ushiwaka would probably never do the mind game thing since he is actually that blunt about things. He doesn't shit talk and won't try to get into the opponent's head. Only people who aren't confident in their own skills would play games like getting into opponents' head. Ushiwaka is not that type of person or player. The reason Ushiwaka said that is that he was very disappointed in Hinata. It's like he said, after the move Hinata put on him when they first met, he EXPECTED Hinata to be good at blocking and receiving, due to his dexterity. So Ushiwaka REALLY was looking forward to playing against Hinata. However, after seeing how "clumsy" Hinata was as a volleyball player, Ushiwaka was disappointed. He expressed DISAPPOINTMENT. I feel like Ushijima told hinata that he sucks because he was disappointed on him. The first time they faced each other Hinata just jumped higher than him and stole the ball from him. I think he was expecting Hinata to be a powerhouse like him and was left unimpressed when he saw how clumsy hinata is

To me watching this match, Shiratorizawa plays like a modern men's team. They're all about nice open sets to the outside hitters with the occasional quick or pipe to shake things up, and let the big outsides smash the ball for kills. They are a power team. Karasuno plays more like a modern women's team. They use slide hits, multiple attackers, angles, etc. to score. They are more of a finesse team.

4:32 I'm japanese and I think its really rare to get hit by coaches etc now days in Japan but maybe in areas like Miyagi, where they're from (Shiratorizawa, Karasuno etc) would be a bit more common than it is in Tokyo if that even makes sense
