She tapped her teammate when she made it around so her teammate would know she made a full lap ahead of them. Genius.

And to further confuse the rest, her teammate picked up pace to "compete" the leaders so they forget that one was already 1 lap ahead.. Everyone was basically thinking that 1 chinese player was behind the pack while the other was "challenging" for first when in reality second place was the true goal. Genius play.

@@henningtsNo, if you look closely at 2:36 all other players stretched out their legs to cross the finish line thinking they were in the FINAL LAP but her team mate didn't. This just goes to prove that she knew that there was 1 more lap to go and they are racing for the second place. So when everyone lost momentum her teammate went ahead and got the second place. I am sure it is a strategy they come up with early.

How do you get to olympic level of sports and you just forget someone took an early lead. My head would explode as a coach. Probably one of the dumbest moments in this sport
@djjorge87
@djjorge87 2 ай бұрын
It's called instinct so when you get to high level of play in any sport. What you learn is you can use people's instincts against them because you go into autopilot mode. And you're not actually thinking you allow your body to just use its muscle memory to do all its things when they hear the final bell. They completely because it's never happened them in training don't. Even take the time to realize they've been lames. At high levels of any sport intelligence matters more them. Physical attributes cause everyone is nearly on the same level when it comes to physical attributes.

Exactly.. To be that fast and have that much endurance that you easily catch the pack and then stay with them almost completely.. You didn't win the race with your mind, you won by being way faster and better. I ran track in a school event (I was NOT a track athlete, everryone just had to do it) and I was running the 800m or something and full sprinted to the lead because I heard my sister cheering me.. I got to the lead and eased off.. and this was maybe 1/6th of the way through the race and I was so dead and exhausted halfway through I had to practically walk the last 100m.

Their job is to follow their race plan, it’s a strategy, the others racers will either go fast like her, or do what they did, and stayed at their own pace. She tried to push, but they didn’t budge, it worked in their favor, but…. It might not happen the next time, they might be ready for that the next time, and actually challenge them.

Because there has been a popular strategy called "teammate sacrifice". One person started earlier to mess up everyone's rhythm, and drop off halfway, while her/his teammate will remain in rhythm and eventually win. The new strategy here is that the "sacrifice" is not a sacrifice. She remained in the game, while everyone probably thought that she had dropped off.

Hard to understand what exactly was happening since I don't know much about Ice Skating. So what Yingru did was she quickly completed a lap ahead of everyone and tapped her teammate who was behind to let her know (I'm thinking the reason she was also behind was that others don't quickly catch what's going on) then her teammate surged towards the leading pack. So then at the end the bell rang the moment Yingru passed the starting line for her last lap, but then everybody INCLUDING the spectators, commentator thought this was everybody's final lap as they cheered, and so everyone began to sprint towards the finish line and when they got to there they slowed down thinking it was over but Yingru's teammate knew it was wasn't and was the only one who didn't slow down which gave her the edge and she ended up comfortably winning second.

This was a well designed strategy and my hat is off to Team China. From the very begining this play took off. Watch both of the Chinese skaters closely and you will see their movements are entirely based off the pack behavior. Including when the team mate made her subtle atteck to throw off the rest of the pack skaters. How they forgot what happened early on is beyond me. Why no other skater attempted to attack when yang did i can't explain either. I won't even guess. What i will say is that as they approached 4 laps to go and the team mate (i cant recall her name, i think lin) is primed and ready to finish the foly and continue to skate out that final lap. It's up to the other skaters to continue the attack and as we witnessed,the foly worked and China rose to the top. It's a simple and great play.

Its not strategy. It's a competition so everybody should move as fast as they could. Even After moving so fast and lead 1 lap, she still able to keep up with others pace with ease. So, she just too fast and since she realize no one try to chase her or follow her pace, what she did after that was just skating savely to finish.
@Dark_Lantern_
@Dark_Lantern_ 10 күн бұрын
Any plan before a game is called a strategy. "Skating as fast as you can" is also a strategy. But that wasn't the strategy. She was not "too fast that no one tried to chase her". The others simply forgot to chase her and forgot that the "final lap" was not the final lap for them. Because traditionally, you're supposed to sprint at the end to reserve stamina. You can clearly see everyone pushed their toes forward on the "final lap" and slowed down while the silver medalist (who was also chinese) was still racing properly. That was the real strategy.

@@Dark_Lantern_ I've roller skated for years and ice skated a little. It's incredibly obvious that in the first few laps, the other skaters were all going too slow. ice speed skating from now on will be very interesting to watch. can't wait to see the next time they race again. We will see more athletes doing the same strategy. Can't wait to watch next one.

Something randomly interesting is during the Chinese national anthem she seemed to be mouthing the words of the anthem. That part of the anthem essentially says “get up and fight”

Now everyone will be alert of such strategies but you will always have the risk of someone speeding up the pace at the beginning, so yeah it takes just one person to try to get one lap ahead to make everyone sprint the entire race lol, she definitely changed the sport

It sure doesn’t look like something that is out of the realm of possibility. Yet all other teams forgot that the Chinese skater was already one lap ahead. Nice move.

It doesnt seem like the main thing in the strategy is that everyone forgets that she lapped them, its that literally noone does anything to prevent her from lapping them

Yang doesn't need this strategy to win the gold medal. The strategy was to secure the silver medal for the other Chinese skater

It's a shame the commentator completely forgot she did this by the end of the race, as he also thought it was the last lap for all the skaters at the same time and thought the race was over for them all.

In 2:34 the skater from the bottom felt on the ice, she could be the 4th. In 2:36 all the coaches felt when they are trying to say that the run was not over.

How? Does anyone actually have the strength to compete in an impromptu sprint then have the endurance keep up with the other skaters that decided not to run a 200m dash in 1500m race
