on off switch wiring, is the ever elusive toggle switch or rocker switch type that can stump the best of us when it comes to wiring. We have found a way to simplify that with this on off switch wiring video just for you guys. they've been called rocker switches toggle switches, kill switches, and so many more things. In this case, Topically, We are just talking about the standard on off switch. It makes no difference if its going in a Lamborghini or a ferarri, a honda or a bently. So, its pretty cut and dry and while we have made many many videos like this. It still seems to be catching people off gaurd.

Thank you for the informative video, however I have a weird issue. I'm using a 3 prong LED toggle switch to control a Bluetooth Pyle AMP on my Golf Cart used to stream music. Weird issue or at least to me is that when I turn the switch to OFF the LED light comes ON and if I turn the switch to ON the LED goes OFF? that makes no sense. So basically when I turn the AMP OFF whilst parked the LED is illuminated /ON surely the LED should be ON when the AMP is ON and the LED should be OFF when the switch is turned to OFF - what have I got wired wrong? Thanks in advance for your response.

This could be several things. What id suggest, is finding out what "power/gnd" is lost when "on" and what "pwr/gnd" becomes active when "off". That will guide you to the answer the fastest way.

Can you install a 3 prong toggle switch like this but into a ground wire? I understand two prongs open and close the circuit and the third “ground” prong helps power the LED. If my two prongs are opening and closing the “ground wire” to another device, Would I just need to create a new ground for the switch for the LED to work? Or do I need to tap the “ground” for the LED into another positive wire instead since the rest of the circuit is controlling a ground wire?

Thanks for the great explanation on the 3 prong rocker, very good and basic understanding Here is my Question: I have a none OEM rear view camera install and it working great. What I want to accomplish is How do I connect the 3prong to view the backup camera without putting the gear in reverse so I can view it anytime I want and when I shift the gear in reverse will still work as usual.

So the radio has a (neg) input. For the "reverse" trigger. That tells the radio to flip into the cam image. You would essentially take a grounded wire...run it to a switch, then out of the switch....into this reverse trigger. This wire would work perfectly. But NOT with an LED lit switch. (Cause its a negative leg).....it would need to be a standard switch. (Because an LED lit switch generally runs the LED via a 12v+ pass through, not (-). Also, this would leave the existing reverse trigger in place. So the shifting into reverse would function the same as it does now still, as well.

I have a 2 pronged toggle switch on my treadmill. I moved the machine and pulled the internal wires off the contacts. I have a white wire and a black wire but only one contact or prong to connect to. Which wire do I connect to the switch and what do I do with the other wire?

Ibroke the key to my kymco agility scooter. I don't get all the schematics. So there are 2 green 1 red 1 black with white stripe that hooks into a blue wire with a yellow stripe. I just want to know what wires go where on a toggle switch

I have a question. I am using a switch like the round toggle switch you showed in the video. I am using it as a remote on off switch for my 1000 watt power inverter. The switch worked fine turning the inverter on and off, however the led won’t light. I have a positive and negative wire from a light that I tapped. Negative wire is on the brass terminal. Positive from the the hot wire is on the outside and the middle one is to my inverter. I actually tried swapping those wires around. Still just shuts on and off. Any ideas? Maybe I did something wrong?

It all sounds about right. Except for 1 possible little thing, lol. 🤪 Most vehicle interior lights use a 12v constant and a (-) trigger. This means the groung isnt always ground, ONLY when active. I would suggest you spike your own ground into the metal somewhere. Use sand paper or something to scrape off the paint so ur connected to direct exposed metal.

@@myonlinecarguy1 the power inverter has a separate chassis ground so I actually tapped into that. Still will not light that led? I’m just wondering if I bought a bad switch?

Hi there can you help me with my car I have a 2015 honda civic exl it's on limp mode I've check lots of things to fix the prob a di would like to let you know that this start when I install a sound system on my car and the alternator is not giving enough power to supply my system and I haven't notice that until when I'm driving and turning my ac and it didn't work also my cruise control so I replace my alternatlr with a high output alt. now the Alt is supplying more tyan enough and I thought that the limp mode will be gone but it's still loosing power when I push the rpm close to 3k rpm. Can you help please

Then install the toggle on the(+) leg for your device. And use the output pin to serve (+) to both the device AND the additional LED. Ground the additional LED on its own n ground the actual device on its own as you would anyway and ur all finished.

So I have that same low profile rocker switch. It’s a 20 amp and I only use it for a kill switch on my wrangler for the fuel pump. My issue is I have to replace the rocker switch like every 1-2 months because the switch stops rocking back and forth. Is this because it’s a cheap Amazon rocker switch or is it because I don’t have it grounded? I don’t care if it lights up or not as it is a hidden kill switch. Thanks for any advice!

Its just a pretty cheap switch. The gnd/led wouldnt effect any mechanics. One of my absolute fav switches is like that. Excellent switch until it falls apart. Lol so dumb.

Sorry if I’m wrong for asking you but you seem to know about wiring and ive been looking for a video about certain wiring. I want to build a desk lamp which is simple enough but I also want to add a wireless charger and maybe even a USB port to the base. The thing that I want to know is if there is a way that I can take all the devices I want to add and combine them so I don’t have 3 separate power cords coming out the base to the outlet. I’ve seen videos that actually are what I’m looking for but none of them have explained the wiring aspect of it. And unfortunately I can’t get a reply from any of those guys and I’ve been looking for a few months now. If you can help that would be great or maybe even if you know of a video that goes into the wiring that I need that would be awesome as well. You have already helped me with adding an on/off switch. Thx for your time.

When it comes to house electric, i tend to try and not have someone DIY it. But it honestly spunds like you just want a power strip for your desk. 1 plug for the wall, that will give many plugs on your desk. For me, the price of a power strip will definitely out weight the advantage of trying to build your own power strip. You could even do a power strip and use a bluetooth switch on the wall side of the plug, this way you could turn everything on the power strip on/off from your phone all at once, lol.

But as far as your ACTUAL question, yes. Youll see each device will have a white and a black wire, simply marry all the whites together and blacks together. When you plug the lamp in, itll just share the circuit .

It’s going to be for me and not selling it or anything so it’s ok if I mess it up. It’s all trial and error for me but I’m ok with it. But thx again for your time

I need help. I'm trying to install a 3 prong illuminated switch to trigger my cooling fans. If I bridge the 2 wire cooling fan switch connector with a paper clip, the fans kick on. How would I wire the 3 prong illuminated switch to trigger the fans like a regular 2 prong switch? I want the little led to kick on when I flip the switch. I'm stumped, don't wanna short circuit anything. When I jump the connector it completes a ground from what I hear. It's a 3 prong illuminated switch, power, negative, and accessory. The cooling fan switch connector has two wires green and black. Bail me please Torretto lol . Thanks great vids.

So, in the 3 prong.....there are 2 prongs that ar jist passthrough....u have to identify those 2. As they will connect to the 2 wires u stated would activate the fan, when touched together.

That will get the fans going. Far as the 3rd prong and the LED portion of the switch, ....generally is the power that passes through, thus the 3rd prong would typically be a GND. ...however, its possible also to pass through a negative lead to turn on n off the device. If thats the leg your working with, then the 3rd prong has to be positive for the light to turn on.

So, 1st things first, the 2 wires that will turn the fan in when twisted together, thise go on the 2 pass through wires. Once u identify those 2 out of the 3 prongs.

Thanks for responding. So my 2 wire cooling fan connector hooks to power and accessory on the 3 prong switch to act as a toggle switch, correct? Then my 3rd prong on the switch which is ground, needs to be grounded in order to illuminate the switch, correct? Toretto STOP RIGHT THERE lol. Thanks brother.

Probably best to use an actual light switch , like for a house. The ampint of power you are askibg about isnt safe for a rocker switch.

Hey bud I have installed a ARB Compressor working fine however it has one of those switches that goes on or off the problem is that the led light is always on using up my cranking battery ...did I wire it wrong or need another switch? ps it also has a relay built in.

Hi I have installed a 12 inch sub with amp in my car, now I want to install a toggle switch for the amp to turn on / off when I want , could a 2 prong toggle switch placed on the remote turn on wire that goes from my pioneer head unit to the amp work ? Just to keep the wiring simple. Everyone feel free to share your advice.

Yeah it would work. The issue with a toggle like that. Is that an amp should see a "slow on"..thats what the remote wire does, on the headunit. A toggle would eliminate that and give an instany rush of voltage, causeing a probable "pop" that is not healthy for amps, or for subs. But yes. Electrically what ur asking is very possible.

@@damienramnarine511 there are specific, slow on/slow off switches and relays that would do EXACTLY what you need. You just gotta find em. Make sure they are 12v dc . And you'll be good to go. You'll have an on/off switch as well as the slow on/slow off. Keeping the subs and the amp safe.

@@damienramnarine511 also, the blue or blue white wite behind your radio is a slow.on/slow off that is built pretty.much for turning the amp on and off safely ONLY when the radio is on and turn the amp off when the radio turns off. But if you jeed more control then that. Then the slow on/of toggle or relay is the way to go.

Because thats unbelievably specific. That video would get 1 view a year, lol. I might be able to help. But ill need an explanation of the function/purpose of each of the 3 switches, each LED and their function and the plastic key. As their function/purpose defines the wiring. I would also need to know each of the switches timing and the reason for those timings. (Firing order).

Hey brother can you guys help us out with this crazy switch in my eyes that I just received it today green is the horn, when pressing it doesn’t stay switched, red is the light switch, which is one I need to use for my led on my bike, which stays on and off, and there’s another blinker switch, all I want is the on and off switches hooked up, I currently have the two toggle switch which is connected through the negative side due to your help and video if it wasn’t for this video I’ll be blowing up numerous amounts of glass fuses, having that said that’s why that has brought me back to your video asking for help, only trust y’all as past experience in searching video, others videos isn’t detailed and straight forward as y’all, cheers guys hope to hear from ya soon

I see.....ok so inside that "module" are several buttons. Diff styles of switches. When you wire it up 1st find power and gnd for it.....once thats identified ther will be 1 output for left blinker, 1 output for right blinker, 1 output for horn and 1 output for led headlight it seems. Generally these outputs are (+), youll need to double check this as the manufacturer controls this and there are no rules. Assuming each output is (+), that means that each device, will need to bw grounded local to a piece of sanded down metal near the device. This might be the best i can do here though. As that "module" isnt just a switch. Its a momentary button, its a double pole double throw latching switch, and it also has a single pole latching on/off button too. Whoever manufacturers this should have pretty simple instructions for it somewhere inline.
