On this episode we take a first look at the new for 2020 Seiko Prospex Alpinist and my pick of the release goes to the black dialed SBDC087 on Stainless Steel bracelet, no sporting an upgraded 6R35 movement with a 70hr power reserve, as well as showing it off via a new display case back, while still retaining it's full 200m of water resistance, this latest Alpinist is more than just a visual update, it's a full upgrade adding substance to match its refreshed style. There'll be more in depth comparisons to come but let me know what you think about this piece so far and my current take on it, thanks guys!

😅 This is like my 7th time watching this video within the past 3 days 🙈 got mine on order from an AD in Germany and I can’t wait for it to finally arrive! I fell in love with the SPB117 Alpinist thanks largely to it’s sportier character and the amazing versatility that this watch has over the other alpinists. I’m really interested what the watch will be like, I’ve heard so many good things about them and Seiko in general, however I’ve never had any personal experience with the brand before, being mainly focused on Swiss brands... nevertheless over the past year or so I have been slowly falling in love with Grand Seiko and until the time comes to purchase some of their offerings I have decided to pull the trigger on this puppy as an introduction to the Seiko brand so to speak and I’m extremely excited to see how it’ll turn out! Thank you for your video, I think this is certainly one of the most detailed and best reviews currently out there 🙏 keep up the amazing work!

It's beautiful. I think I like this version the most out of the new ones. The fact it is the only version that comes with a bracelet that adds bonus points as well. My only reluctance to getting another alpinist is the fact the compass crown still does not lock and my OCD makes it hard to look past the occasional (enough) unintentional movement. Yes, it is a feature I will never use, yet, I still dont like the fact I feel compelled to keep it aligned regardless. Other than that, a fantastic watch.

I am a fidgeter so this won't be an issue for me, movable bezels are great for me and this one is quiet so won't annoy anyone like my diver does Hahahaha 'click, click, click' 😂👍

This black dial is the one to go with IMO. I'm considering waiting until the hype dies down a bit and picking one up later this year as a spring/summer adventure watch. I'm thinking an Erika's strap in OD green with the red stripe would go nicely. Looking forward to the full review/comparison!

I received my black one 4 days ago and paid $975 Australian for it. Even at that price it’s exceptional value when you consider the fit and finish. My only complaint is that gap under the clasp. Anyone considering one of these will not be disappointed.

I've got the green.. Gave it to my daughter. She loved it and I couldn't fashion the green. Absolutely love this. Love the cyclop. But twice as much money as the green.

Is the 2020 Prospex Alpinist case identical to the case of the SARB017? If so, can the display case be swapped with the solid case of the SARB017 to make the watch thinner?

i think it might be thicker because of the new movement, so not sure if it will fit the old case. don't know if the display case is the reason for the extra thickness. everithing else is exactly the same

I think you can, the movement dimensions are the same. Once I get my sbdc087 I will try the case back swap with that of the sarb017.

Just got the Seiko sarb017 Alpinist for $450. Had tried on the new Alpinist but didn’t think it was worth $200 more. All the positive videos twisted my arm into getting the Alpinist to begin with, or I’d have just gotten the Seiko 5 Atlas/Land Shark for $250.

Beautiful watch! £650 is a fair price, compared to my Swiss made watches! Seiko in house movement. People have got to use to Seiko old prices for too long! Where im use to swiss prices. Therefore I find a watch in this built cheap! Mines in the post. Cannot wait!

Beautiful watch, I am just afraid it is too small for my wrist. I had Seiko SNKL41 and it was beautiful, but at 38mm it was really too small for me so I gave it to my wife. such a beautiful watch, but unfortunately it looks really small on my wrist. This one is millimetre and a half larger, but I am afraid not enough.

Maybe it’s just me but it seem that south printing on the chapter ring is misaligned. This is what i dread always when i buy Seiko. I like the design and mine is on the way, so I am not here to trash the watch.

Not completely sure witch part your taking about and I know seiko are known for misaligned chapter rings, but if it helps the chapter ring is adjustable, so could be not completely reset.

@@olivergooding8512 Yes I know that the compas can be adjusted, but if you look closely you can see that north and south markers will never be aligned perfectly on the watch in this video. It is not printed precisely.

They use it deliberately on the lower/middle range, so that there is a reason to spend more on a more expensive bracelet or watch such as the SARX.

Renzo Verhoeve That’s the point of it though. You’d like to have a better bracelet, and Seiko believes there’s a good chance you’ll end up buying a more expensive watch to get it. They may also believe that die hard Alpinist enthusiasts are going to get it anyway, so both of their bases are covered.

Beautiful watch overall, but the display caseback is disappointing. I'd expect some more decoration such as perlage considering the price. Not a fan of the cyclops either.

Reflective silver indices hard to see at certain angles (as you pointed out)- beautiful though!... Also, what’s up with the white date wheel?? Update: Just grabbed the SBDC093 (ivory/gilt)...thanks for the tip my man!👍

I’m not feeling the black one at all. The high polished markers make it hard to read. Also the cyclops is not my favorite. Love the 70 hour power reserve though. Not worth the extra money though

I love my SARB033 and 017 ("Green Alpanist"), and I will probably never sell them but I can't condone what Seiko is doing with their prices. I bought my 017 from new at ~ ¥46000 just before all the hype started surrounding it. Same with my 033. The price hikes are ridiculous and Seiko is losing territory to micro brands in the low to mid-end market which offer much more watch for the money - like my new Newmark 71. Sure their Seiko 5s are going to sell like hotcakes but there are so many better options out there for the price. The only thing Seiko has is a rich history in horology. And of course their lovely GS brand but that's a whole different price category.

How useful is the compass feature?

cybrough Not very useful, since it isn’t actually a compass - no magnetised needle. It’s only an aesthetic set of markings to play into it’s marketed image of an outdoors watch. Useful compasses have sighting components, rotating bezels and markers to precisely set a course, floating needle and housing, can be set down on a map to determine a bearing, scales to calculate distance etc etc. Even those small basic round compasses are nearly useless for orienteering because they don’t have the above features. You can just use the hour hand and 12 marker on any watch (or with a mental image of a clock face when looking at the time on a digital watch) to roughly find north (making sure to account for daylight savings). So yeah it’s just a gimmick. I think it looks more like a roulette table.

Jimmy V. I’ve compared it with my SARX039 and I think they’re both the same fit and finish. But the SARX has a much better clasp on the bracelet.

That gap between the clasp and bracelet really grinds my gears, it just doesn't look good and it makes it look cheap imo. For 750 bucks (!), Seiko could've gone easely with a better clasp with this watch. Really keeps me from buying it.

Yea it's the same but intended for the Japanese market. It has the same specs and movement. Also the Japanese version is usually a bit cheaper. What's the asking price in the store ?

@@leyay7540 I dont think it is. It's made in the same place that the highest end prospect X is made. The highest end uses a grand Seiko movement. I'm pretty sure it is made by the same guys making GS.

The only real difference between the Prospex and the SARB017 is that the SARB had a screwed down crown, which the Prospex seems to have eliminated.

Yes, @fateequinox8196 , I bought an SBDC091J1 Prospex Alpinist about a year after I wrote and forgot about my comment here. It is on my wrist right now, on a two-tone MILTAT Louis Jubilee bracelet (bought from Mark, at Island Watch). It's currently my favorite watch in my collection.

Not feeling it. The sarb017 was unique and very striking. At more than double the price without really changing much is a non-starter. Calling it prospex doesn't justify it.
