One of first attempts to breathe some life back into our 1926 Rumely Model S 30-60 oil pull. She decided to spit fire and smoke at us. The tractor has not moved under it's own power in over a decade and magneto and ignition timing issues are to blame in what is normally a very dependable machine. Pioneer Acres Museum, Irricana, Alberta.

Funnily enough, many old tractors had smaller engines that were used solely to start the bigger engines. Those were needed as there were no electrics, and if there were electrics they were not capable of rotating the big engine. And I mean, the tractors literally had two engines installed, one to power the tractor and one dedicated to starting the tractor.

Intake valve is sticking open and ignition timing is way off.The late Mr. Vernon Griffin of Portland Tenn. would prime his with 2 rotations of the flywheel then pull it up to TDC easy by hand. After it crossed past TDC, the impulse magneto would "snap" , one of the cylinders would light and the flywheel would pull out of his hand and the engine start.
@gittyupalice96
@gittyupalice96 4 жыл бұрын
@@Clunk49 exactly, these engines should start right up by hand. Almost always less than 4 rotations, if it takes more than that they're doing something very wrong and probably shouldn't touch it. My guess is the timing is wrong, wich can blow the cylinder clean in half.

They actually start pretty easily on gas when they're cold. Sometimes it's just a matter of rolling them over top dead center with the compression releases open, and as soon as the impulse coupling trips on the mag, they'll fire.😁

They are pretty simple. They used a mixer instead of a carburetor so fuel supply was as simple as opening a needle valve and adjusting it as the engine load demanded it, using the color of the exhaust smoke and engine rhythm to guide you. Starting was simply setting the fuel valve, flipping down the decompression lever, applying some choke and barring the engine over. Ignition impulse and retarding was fully automatic so no worries there. When it fired you simply let it spool up as you adjusted your fuel settings. Under a heavy load a second valve on the mixer supplied water to the fuel mix to prevent detonation. The mixer also had a third valve for kerosene fuel which was used after the engine warmed up to operating temperature, gasoline was used for starting but not running due to it's high value in those days. Engine speed was adjusted with a simple ratcheted governor override lever that acted on the centrifugal flyball speed governor. Enjoy.

Looks like someone forgot to purge the engine on gasoline last time it ran!

It looks to me like you are trying to start it backwards. I thought Rumely flywheels turned clockwise.
@Rainhill1829

Early models with the massive parallel cranked twin cylinder engines ran in the opposite direction, clockwise viewed from the flywheel, these late models were a new design that ran the other way.

It's amazing how many of these slow running engines tend to make musical tunes as they operate.

Yes. Nothing sounds like an old engine with big pistons and a huge stroke. That's music.

That's just what happens when you mess around putting big cams and intakes with lots of advance in an engine... they get real ornery and mean.

Are we sure those were just ignition timing issues? I mean, the only times it fired, it fired right back out of the intake. Not sure if you can advance your timing that far and still get any ignition at all. No idea how these engines are built, but that looks more like a valve timing issue to me. Or perhaps, as other people mentioned, they were even cranking it backwards?

We were rotating it correctly, the problem was eventually traced to the magneto coupling being bolted together in the wrong phase.
