The transistor was a miniaturised version of the vacuum tube. Vacuum tubes evolved from incandescent light bulbs, and incandescence light bulbs were created through experiments with electricity long before Edison - Swan and Humphrey Davy who also created the miners safety lamp and the Carbon Arc Lamp. The computer chip was just an extension upon the transistor and a project in miniaturisation. All the advancements in computer chips has just been a progressive improvement in the miniturisation idea. From values to transistor's, then the integrated circuit, then microprocessors, then multiple microprocessors... It wasn't that exceptional an idea, it was a logical progression once microcircuitry became possible. It's not until Quantum computers we actually break away from the same idea we've been using for over 200 years... We moved from analog (variable voltage) to digital (on and off) but apart from that it's the same technology just smaller... It's not different to the smaller more efficient engines in cars as a progression of improved tolerances and mechanical engineering. The same principles just improved manufacturing techniques and processes. In some respects he's right, our advancements are not the equal of those of the past, who made scientific breakthroughs of inordinate progression without standing on the shoulders of others who did it first before them... Ford stood on Benz shoulders, Edison stood on Swan and Davy's shoulders... There are few, none that come to mind of truly innovative invention in the last century, even Oppenheimer wasn't the first to hypothesise an atomic device, _HG Wells first imagined a uranium-based hand grenade that "would continue to explode indefinitely" in his 1914 novel The World Set Free_ _Not forgetting in December 1938, over Christmas vacation, physicists Lise Meitner and Otto Frisch made a startling discovery that would immediately revolutionize nuclear physics and lead to the atomic bomb. The idea of nuclear power began in the 1930s, when physicist Enrico Fermi first showed that neutrons could split atoms. Fermi led a team that in 1942 achieved the first nuclear chain reaction, under a stadium at the University of Chicago_ Of course they in turn stood on the shoulders of others... _The modern understanding of ionizing radiation got its start in 1895 with Wilhelm Röntgen. In the process of conducting various experiments in applying currents to different vacuum tubes, he discovered that, despite covering one in a screen to block light, there seemed to be rays penetrating through to react with a barium solution on a screen he’d placed nearby. After several experiments, including taking the first photo (of his wife’s hand and skeletal structure) with the new rays, he named them “X-Rays” temporarily as a designation of something unknown, and the name stuck_

add in to that, that the inventions of today often allow us to create those of tomorrow Faster and Better. The fact we have the computer to shoulder a large part of the burden let's us design the bits for a new computer more easily. Well done humanity.

My scary animal: Humboldt squid with bat wings and echo location. They hunt at night in flocks. Out of the darkness you hear the feint rapid clicks of a hundred of them (like a silenced MG42) and then BAM! One of them grabs your head like a face hugger and is tearing it to shreds with its beak and barbed tenticles while suddenly another five start doing the same to your limbs and torso. Within seconds it's a feading frenzy. But it turns out they're not too keen on the taste of humans so they don't eat much and just leave you to slowly die from a thousand cuts and chunks.

@@AD270479 yeah but Karl did his usual thing and assumed it was the vacuum guy when he heard the name Dyson rather than listening to what the full story was. If you look at the list from the show he's referring to it is the physicist Dyson. James Dyson didn't even invent the vacuum cleaner, it was invented by Hubert Cecil Booth in 1901.

Hence the clarification I don't quite get what point you're trying to make by time stamping the section?

@@benjammin9471 yes. He was. Incorrectly Hence my correction The documentary/ list he is talking about 'gretest minds of the 20th century' had Dyson in it.
