Gamer's Thumb, more formally known as De Quervain's Tendonitis/Tenosynovitis can plague more than just gamers. Moms frequently suffer from this condition when getting their children into or out of their car seats. But just lifting groceries repeatedly can cause this.
Dr. Lin teaches the Finkelstein's test to help determine if you have Gamer's Thumb. Then he teaches an easy exercise to help alleviate pain and strengthen the muscles in your hand!

if this works I owe you like a million dollars, gave myself a repetetive strain injury playing too much animal crossing when the pandemic hit and haven't been able to game since lol. def right in that area tho so hoping this stretch added to my routine helps!

@@wolforlife4828 it can come back if you go back to your old ways, I'm trying to heal my thumb after I noticed a boney appearance in the base of my thumb , with pain ofc, and this indicates inflammation in my joint, and that's painful, I can hardly text and I have no idea if I'll heal before I have to write at school

Wow. Been dealing with gamer's thumb on and off for five years. the relief from this exercise is noticeable. Other exercises left me feeling tired.

How many times a day? How many reps? Before or after you’ve used the muscle? How long do you recommend the card to be held; 3 seconds, 5 seconds or 10 seconds? Seems like a lot of people have similar questions and some clarification would help. Thanks

Started feeling gamer's thumb because I bought a new controller to use for digital art. I spend hours drawing each day (if I have time), so my thumb began hurting in no time. This exercise took much of the pain away almost immediately!

Wow man. I have been feeling gamers thumb for about 3 weeks now. Thought maybe just resting it and not playing as much would do the trick but it seemed to get worse. Just by doing this exercise one time I already felt the difference in my thumb area. How long should I continue to do this for?

Omg, I had gamers thumb for almost two months until I finally decided to do something about it. Just did this trick is the pain is literally gone. Will still take it easy with the games though. Thank you so much Dr.Lin!

You said everyday, but I'm not sure how many times a day, or how many reps Edit: I would not recommend doing this, one set ended up making everything so much more aggravated. Nobody seem to find an answer about how many reps because it wasn't included regardless.

Is gamekeepers thumb the same thing? When I went to see my specialist that is what he told me I had.

My thumb been feeling weak since a week ago , at first it was in pain but I kept playing and using wrist grip work out on injured thumb. It's not as painful but just feels weak when I try pressing or picking stuff up.thanks

Hey, I just wanted to check if you have figured anything out since you made This comment? I experience The same weakness In the thumb you mention and it’s very hard to keep my thumb on the analog stick and even typing on my phone. I have tried many things like thumb exercises and thumb brace and medication but nothing seems to have worked. So now I’m desperately researching and trying to find an answer

This is an exercise that would contribute to thumb OA pain. The adductor already has a very strong pull on the anterior oblique ligament for many people. Why not thumb isometrics for MP abduction in the palmer and radial planes? Mp flexion? All less irritating and as effective to stabilize and resolve Mommy and gamers thumb. Also soft tissue pliability work to the first web space and the thenar thumb would be fantastic for gammers.

where i can find a guide to do these kind of exercices? because those that i find do more harm than good (when y place my palm in a vertical neutral position and try to move my thumb out while resisting it with my other hand).

I wonder this too. Did it come back for you? I felt almost immediately 2 small pops in my hand when I pulled on the card. Now my thumb feels waaaayyy more flexible and does not give this snapping out sensation anymore. I don't want to celebrate too soon but it seems like this instantly cured it :)

@@JustCauseChannel I don't remember exactly that injury I got but I believe it just came after a while and then I just waited it out. It was because of how I wa holding the tennis racket and I think I was just using my thumb a lit like how I usually play on table tennis which got my thumb very sore

I have bad pain and discomfort in both my flexor tendons in my thumbs, nobody talks about the tendons I'm experiencing inflammation in. It's been months and nothing is helping 🙁

Hey doc I use to play lot of mobile games and text very fast thats y the knuckles part of my left thumb is swollen and in the wrist part near the thumb to when I extend it , I am really worried this happened 2months before , BTW It doesn't hurt just swollen will it ever be good or I need operation 🥺🤕 I feel very tensed Can U pls help me

Yes I'm seeing my pain greatly reduced after just a minute doing this for first time. The popping in my thumb just stopped. What a great stretch :) 45 hours a week of MK11 caught up with me :)

Like when I take a break it doesn't hurt as much I can still Handel it when I I did not know about it I kept on playing and playing and I kept doing that for a month now it hurts really bad

@@hydro4773 I kept going to and put foam style bandages on my fingers and tips. Not realizing that made it worse since my sensitivity in my thumb was now gong and I was pressing on the D pad so hard. I'm changing from OEM xbox elite 2 controller to Paradise Arcade Mpress, much more ergonomical on the hands and I don't need my left thumb much. . Also the the Mixbox looks ideal. For now on lots of stretching before gaming. Who knew this pain could happen so intense.
