Thanks to a viewer's suggestion, I checked 'the vault' and found a video from the Spring of 2015 that I never published - the Wisp! The only flying video I got was on a really windy day (included), so I was waiting to get some video on a calmer day, but the summer was too hot and I forgot about it. I think the point about the rudder being a little too small is correct, adding the tab was helpful. The smaller jobs fly a little faster (the RC weight is a greater percentage of the total weight) and are more erratic in the wind, so I've gravitated back to 30" or more. I've also posted some pictures (as Flyguy) in the relevant thread at hippocket:

Nice idea on the rudder with clear transparent plate !

Thanks, I'm not the first to do that, but it really helps in this case, the Wisp rudder could really use some more area, and this way you don't really see it.

Even with the R/C those flights were hair-raising! Keep going to the vault. Mine is full only of broken planes.

Yes, the smaller planes fly faster and are trickier in the wind, which is why I've gone back to a slightly larger size.

For Bill Kuhl. Redcon 621 Rx is 2.4g from Banggood $18NZD. For Spektrum Tx . I don’t know how you get your models to fly so long.Great video again.

Thank you and thanks for that information, I'll check them out. Trimming, the rubber/prop combo, and smooth prop functioning are the key factors, I've had lots and lots of trial and error over the years!

Great video as always, thank you. I am inspired to try rc assist on one of my FF rubber models, I have built a KK Gipsy, I had no problems sourcing thr rc equipment, I have a Lemon lightweight Rx , and a nice micro servo from Hobby King. I have quite a number of small lipos from my indoor rc models. However , someone , said that using a 1S 3.7V 150mAh battery was dicy as the voltage can drop below 3 volts rendering the Rx inoperative, he suggested a NiMH pack giving giving 4.8 volts. The problem is the lipo is 4grams as opposed to 27grams!! for the NiMH pack ,You dont seem to have any problems with small lipos I would be interested to hear yoir views. Thank you for sharing your lovely models,
@domoremath
@domoremath 4 жыл бұрын
Thank you. The Gipsy is a nice plane, should fly great. I've heard this about single lipos many times, however I think it's just armchair speculation - they haven't actually tried it. A fully charged lipo is around 4.2 volts, and in my experience you can get an 'on' time of about 30 min before you get down to 4 volts, so that's an easy 3-4 flights right there before you even hit 4 volts. The one time I had an inoperative receiver was when I flew 6 flights with my Lanzo, and it went out just as I was landing, so after that I've always changed the battery after 4 flights, and that's with the 70 mAh battery, which is what I use. Checking the battery, it was less than 3.8 volts (3.5 is listed as the inoperative point on Lemons and Orange). Let's just say in the last 9 years I've had 1000+ flights with a single lipo (70 mAh) and have had no receiver problems whatsoever, I would have reported it if I did. When I want to save weight, I've even used the 30 mAh many times, but you only get about 20 min with that one, so 3 flights and it's battery change time, but just bring a few. So you don't need any heavy packs, and you can't do that on lightweight rubber models anyway, 6-8 grams is the max.

@@domoremath Thanks, for the great reply I will certainly go ahead with the lipos 👍😀

@@oldAdger Have fun! Just play it safe and check the voltage at the end of each flight, then you'll get a pretty good idea of how much 'on' time you have. We're not driving a motor, just a servo, and only once in awhile, so you have much more time for rubber RC.

I always wondered where it was you flew. Not being American I couldn't recognise the location but you mentioned Hells Kitchen in this video and I checked it out on Google Maps and now I know 😍😁👍 So that will be DeWitt Clinton Park 🙂
@domoremath
@domoremath 4 жыл бұрын
Yup, good old DeWitt Clinton! I lost flying time last year because it was closed for quite a time while they resurfaced it (the new astroturf seems softer), and this year go messed up with the pandemic, so I'm hoping maybe the Fall when it cools off a little I can get back out, indoor is probably off for the Fall.

his looks really nice. I've never purchased a "short kit" so basically its just the wing parts and you provide the rest? Also I was wondering with that type of covering does it increase the wings rigidity and strength after covering?
@domoremath
@domoremath 4 жыл бұрын
It's the wing/stab ribs and any fuselage/rudder formers, you provide the strip wood. I'm using 1/4 or 1/3 mil Mylar, which adds some strength, but you have to make sure that your structure is nice and stiff, the covering will not cure a floppy wing!

Thanks. Yes, I lost the Tubestake when it went out of the field, kzfaq.info/get/bejne/b9qTn7h22tXMnXk.html Never got it back, I even got on the roofs of the buildings it went over but never found it. Lost my Bob White Coupe on a building roof, but actually got it back after about 4 days of asking supers to check the roof, and it still flies: kzfaq.info/get/bejne/etZ4n9GBp9iYlXk.html I lost my Comet Pepper in a tree, beyond reach of my 50' pole and I never got it back, I think I have a video of it somewhere hitting the tree, though I try to put up more pleasant videos!

I wish I could stop over, and with your help, build a RC version Comet Taylorcraft 54" wingspan rubber powered. I don't know why, I have to build a RC version of this plane someday. Maybe I do know why, I started to build one once as a kid. But threw it away because we moved. I had the wings and fuselage framed up, and it was just way to large and fragile to try to deal with to move.
@domoremath
@domoremath 4 жыл бұрын
Then get building, that's the only way to scratch that itch. Would be a good choice for RC rubber, equipment weight is negligible (like in my Wakes). I like that Taylorcraft as well, but its too big for my tiny field (and people in the field might complain about something that size) and my airplane-filled storage cages!
@davidquerry8869

Just asking, why wouldn't you launch from downwind at the field, and then fly into the wind, so it easily comes back to you? But then I guess, too strong of a wind would immediately push the model out of the field behind you. Where do you like to launch from at the field and why?
@domoremath
@domoremath 4 жыл бұрын
I usually launch a little left of downwind, like in this video, or directly downwind if it's really windy, so the plane picks up some speed and then turns into the wind during the climb. It gets a little tricky in this field because often the wind is coming in more than one direction, but I usually launch anywhere from a little right of into the wind to directly downwind. Windy days are tough because, as you can see in this video, when you make a turn the planes go way downwind out of the field.

Based on your videos I tried to ordered Lemon ultra-light receiver and was refunded. Now I see Orange 415 receiver is discontinued. Any other options for tiny receivers?
@domoremath
@domoremath 4 жыл бұрын
Ouch I hate to hear that, these small receivers keep disappearing. I checked their site and I see you can get the top pin version, slightly heavier at 3.84 g, or you could actually go lighter by getting their no-pin version, 2.47g, then you just add two or three pins for the battery, servo, and maybe altimeter. Problem is that I have about 12 orange receivers and probably 10 Lemon receivers so I'm set for awhile since they don't seem to break, I'd have to check the market to see what else is available these days in the under 4 g range, I think the problem there is the demand is low.

Bill, see my post. Redcon Rx 2.4g and dirt cheap. Banggood sell them. Ideal for rubber models with 1.7g servo. They need a Spektrum Tx. I’ve used them and they just work fine. However, I find RC on small rubber models just shortens their already short flights, unless you can fly like domoremath.👍Better to find a big field, wind on lots of turns, wait for good air and dt.☺️

@@jimbo2629 I will look for that one. I used UMX Radian receiver in a P30 that works well except does not penetrate any wind at all. My field is small but on some flights you do not have to touch RC at all. kzfaq.info/get/bejne/nNN1eb1pqJemhIE.html

It tends to be the other way around in this field - 100 feet or below it tends to be windy, I think it's a layer of wind coming off the Hudson River. Once you get over about 150 feet, that seems to be where the thermals are!
