Ah! Just a Phase, not 11am! Now that's a DEEP CUT

Yes, But the riff for 11 am is epic too! Should definitely take a crack at it. Also, no shame but I think you’re missing a hammer on in that just a phase riff instead of playing the open g twice. And not to nit pick but missing the open E string in the wish you were here lick. instead of just alternating between the 9th and 7th frets. Rock on man!

When you played through these songs my eyes started tearing up. More than 20 years of emotion coming to a head i think. It brought me back to a time when i was really happy, jamming along with Incubus with my friends and having a great time at school and at home. It's been pretty rough since then and things haven't really worked out for me. But maybe it's a sign to try to find that happiness again.

During my tenure as guitarist for Rick Springfield, we re-recorded Jessies Girl for that very purpose of owning the master for that song. It was a lot of fun, capturing the tones of that musical era, and playing the song as close to the original as we possibly could.

I wish more bands would re-record their old stuff like that, especially when the original's production quality was pretty bad (he says, staring directly at Metallica's Kill 'em All)

Something tells me if Metallica tried to record one of their GOAT albums they would probably just turn out worse than the originals. Metallica RIP live for sure, so no doubt on their ability to play them on par, but recording wise...
@klauswigsmith
@klauswigsmith 2 ай бұрын
nahhh....leave them alone. For OG fans there's so much nostalgia attached to the original recordings...I would never listen to newer versions. And what's wrong with Kill'em All? If you're going to point the finger at any Metallica album, it's gotta be AJFA, and all that needs is a re-mastering with the bass turned up a bit.

I super dig this video. You're demonstrating a ton of different riffs for those that want to play along, showing your chops as a player in general, teaching things like harp harmonics, and being positive about a band you love. It's so common for people who love a band to kind of shun anything new they do, let alone rerecordings/reimaginings of old songs that have been laser cut into your brain at this point. In the video Rob Scallon did with Marcin, Marcin showed that he does harp/false harmonics with his pinky instead of thumb, which I believe is a more classical guitarist thing so you can continue to use your other fingers more freely to play other things at the same time. I've actually started doing this as well, because it means you can still hold a pick if you use your middle and pinky finger. When not holding a pick I actually use my index and ring instead of pinky. Whatever works!

I was also in a Incubus cover band! More recently in 2019 though, honestly some of the most fun I've ever had was recreating these songs, especially 11am. I was the drummer though haha. I grew up idolizing Jose Pasillas so doing it full time was great! Our guitarist was adamant we covered the songs like these live versions and when he heard they were redoing this album as a "live" version he was talking about it nonstop for like a week haha.

He’s been playing a tele for a bit now. As a tele guy who hadn’t seen incubus in 20 years I was tickled to see him rockin it last year. It didn’t sound out of place on anything - Circles and Nice to Know You really make sense with it. Now if they busted out certain shade or new skin or something I think HBs would be needed to make it sound right. That solo on echo was definitely harp harmonics on the original. I’m kinda surprised he’s not still doing it but I guess the attack and chime of the SCs has nearly the same sonic effect.

The singles of Echo and Circles on Spotify seem like they're really compressed. They sound overly rich and "wall of sound" with a layer of distortion over the whole recording that takes away from the detail and separation of the instruments and vocals. Do you hear the same thing? If so, gawd, I'd love to remix/master this to allow the recording to really breathe. Thanks for the breakdown of this! I've not listened to much Incubus in the past and will definitely do so now.

I didn't know they did that. Gave it a quick listen (a few of my favorites) and I'm going to have to give it a listen again. I love Dustin's voice on the new albums, but the tone he had back the early 2000's just fit those songs a lot more. The first 4 albums were released while I was in HS, first learning to play guitar and playing with bands, so definitely got me into heavier stuff....I don't want to say it's not good, but I'll have to listen to the album a few more times before committing to a (personal) answer.

I know that Gordon Lightfoot re-recorded his songs from the ‘60s to match his modern ‘70s sound when Gord’s Gold was released. I don’t know if any song ownership was involved. But given the history of labels, producers, executives, etc. outright stealing money from the artists who actually wrote and created the music, I certainly understand what TS is doing. And I applaud her business sense.

There's a Christian metal band called War of Ages that re-recorded their first album (which was self-titled) as their third album (named "Fire From the Tomb"). "Fire From the Tomb" had an additional song ("The Awakening") which was also re-recorded on their next album. The re-recorded songs sound a lot better in terms of quality and production, but there is a level of passion on the original recordings that the newer versions lack. They had the same lead guitarist, but a different rhythm guitarist and they just changed some things that didn't need to be changed. The original rhythm guitarist was more aggressive and did a lot of palm-muted Tremelo picking, whereas the newer guitarist was more melodic (there's nothing wrong with that, but when something is different from what you fell in love with, you tend to prefer the original). They did add a guitar solo to one of my favorite songs on the album, "Battle On." It's a simple solo, but it sounds great.
