Hospital Construction

Week 8 in the ongoing Ⓢ series, which follows the construction of a new 13-story senior living building in San Francisco. This is a #construction #timelapse with various closeups and "sub-time-lapses" at various speeds, condensing the week of March 23 - 27, 2020, into about 22 minutes.
This week the excavation is completed (just barely ahead of a concrete pour) and all the excavators leave the site. No more excavators! (Except possibly for digging up the street in the future.) More and more rebar continues to arrive. There was no work on Saturday, and I didn't capture any closeups on Friday, so we spend Friday watching the tower crane spinning, swinging and flexing.
Set to a hodgepodge of various music tracks, licensed from Audio Network (in chronological order):
Dynamite 3 - Per Ljungqvist, George Nakas, Sara Gunnarsson (2784/10)
Light Fantastic - Tom Quick (1548/8)
Beard Trim - Bob Bradley, Matt Parker, Steve Dymond (2821/5)
Rugged Land - Tim Garland (3009/1)
Starting Point - Igor Dvorkin, Duncan Pittock, Ellie Kidd (1761/6)
Competition - Julian Emery, Cenzo Townshend (2702/2)
Super Fi - Marc Jackson Burrows (3168/9)
As usual, you're always welcome to listen to your own playlist instead if you prefer (there's no dialog in the video).

San Francisco has very strict building requirements for earthquakes, the massive concrete floating slab is needed so buildings can survive violent earthquakes while the soil beneath might become almost liquid. Building foundations in places like New York City where there is less risk of earthquakes and often solid strong bedrock is available are much different.

Does anyone know what the steps or levels are for in the concrete floor are for?
@constructionwatcher5381
@constructionwatcher5381 4 жыл бұрын
What you see being poured in the near half of the site is just a thin layer of concrete to create a firm working surface for installation of re-bar, pipes, and conduit. You can see that in place in the far half of the site. Then a very thick concrete pad (think around 5 feet thick or more) will be poured over all that. Apparently some parts of that pad need to be thicker depending on the building load that will be applied from above. Thus the different levels you see in the foreground. They want the top of the pad to be flat, so they make the bottom at different levels to create the differing thicknesses.

It's St. Mary's Cathedral, the "new" one constructed in the 1960's as I recall, to replace the "old" one which was on the site where the construction is taking place. The foundations of the old one were being demolished in the early weeks of this series.

Dear, I like photography for more than 30 years. Today my specialty is VR360 (zaer360.com.br), I am Brazilian and I live in Brazil. I was delighted with the beautiful timelapse work done by you. Would it be possible to reveal to me which camera used to capture the images? Is the original capture video or photo? Forgive my curiosity ... Anyone who loves the art of photography is just like that. If I can't reveal it, I'll understand. Thank you very much for understanding this. Congratulations on the beautiful work. José Carlos, from Joinville, Southern Brazil.

I am wondering why they are not compacting the soil before doing the blinding layer? Is this a normal practice there?
@constructionwatcher5381
@constructionwatcher5381 4 жыл бұрын
They water it down a lot, and the soil is very sandy. This part of San Francisco is essentially built on sand dunes. We did see then in a prior week doing density testing of the soil before pouring the concrete. Maybe with this condition mechanical compaction is not required?
@kamrankeri7314
@kamrankeri7314 4 жыл бұрын
Well actually the soil is sand so it doesn't require mechanical compaction u just achieve the compaction by spraying enough water they also did the test. In case of sand its more then 90% so its not an issue

First of all, I'm so glad to have found this channel. Thank you for all the hard work you put into it. Secondly, In my next life, I am absolutely going to be a heavy equipment operator! No if's and or buts about it! Finally, I'm totally perplexed by the method they are using for the foundation. Is it common practice in earthquake zones to build a massive, monolithic foundation slab rather than drive piles to the bedrock? I would think there is a potential for subsidence or severe shifting during a large earthquake from the foundation essentially floating. But these are my armchair structural engineering observations. I'm sure this is a perfectly safe and stable method, just seems counter intuitive to my limited understanding of structural engineering. At any rate, I'm looking forward to next weeks episode!
@GSMSfromFV
@GSMSfromFV 4 жыл бұрын
My limited understanding is this: If you are building a high-rise office/residential tower, then drive piles. Since this is "only" 13 stories, then maybe a monolithic slab foundation is sufficient . . . even in earthquake country.
