I’m on a business trip in NYC, meeting investors and possible hires. While there, I go through the four most important lessons I learned over the past year working on building startups.
Summary of the four lessons learned:
1. Types of Startup Founders: Understand the two types of startup founders - those who wait for the right idea and those who actively seek out ideas. Recognize that good problems suitable for startups are rare, and even great ideas need experienced handling.
2. Flexibility and Learning: Most startup ideas might not be as good as they initially seem, but the key is to be flexible and open to changing your direction based on what you learn along the journey.
3. Passion vs Opportunity: You don't need to be deeply passionate about a specific problem to succeed in startups. Sometimes, the most lucrative opportunities lie in "boring" industries that many overlook.
4. Building a Team and Culture: The importance of building something meaningful from the ground up and surrounding yourself with brilliant people. It's not just about the product or industry; it's about the people you work with and the culture you create.

absolutely amazing video! I do have some ideas and plans to start my own startup in the near future. I would really like to contribute and collaborate on your projects. I know this will be an amazing opportunity for me to learn and work while being around experienced people like yourself. I dont mind the money rn I just want to be a part of it and be around as I do feel this is the perfect place for me.

Would you say there's ageism for serial founders? Like, if you get sick of your FAANG job in your 30s and really want to work for yourself, do you think VCs would see that as a negative compared to someone in their 20s?

I really appreciate all your videos , and now I have a curiosity.. you said you always used ANKI while preparing and it helped you a lot.. do you find yourself still using nowadays after you have left your PhD for the tasks required in your business ?

Tbh, I stopped using it completely. I’m definitely loosing a lot of knowledge because of this, but I guess that’s ok. It served its purpose :)

@@SamuelBoschMIT Thank you and do you think that going to a university except for fields like Law, Medicine and Mechanical Engineering is still necessary nowadays in terms of getting a job in industry? Like to become a software engineer or data scientist?
