In today's session, we explain how to move into and out of "Trophy Pose" with a simple and easy-to-replicate image!
The biomechanics of the arm action in the tennis serve involves a combination of movements from the shoulder, elbow, wrist, and fingers. During the serve, the shoulder rotates internally to generate torque, which is then transferred to the arm. The elbow extends rapidly, adding to the overall speed and power of the serve. The wrist and fingers contribute by adding spin to the ball. The coordination of these movements results in a fluid and efficient arm action that is essential for producing a powerful and accurate serve in tennis. Additionally, proper technique and posture can help to reduce the risk of injury to the shoulder and elbow.
The anatomy of the arm plays a crucial role in the biomechanics of the tennis serve. The muscles involved in the arm action of the tennis serve include the rotator cuff muscles (supraspinatus, infraspinatus, teres minor, and subscapularis), the deltoid muscle, the triceps brachii, the biceps brachii, and the forearm muscles (flexor and extensor). The rotator cuff muscles provide stability to the shoulder joint and help to generate torque during the serve. The deltoid muscle and the triceps brachii are involved in shoulder extension and arm extension, respectively. The biceps brachii and the forearm muscles are involved in wrist and finger movements, which add spin to the ball. In addition, the bones of the arm, including the humerus, ulna, and radius, play a role in the biomechanics of the serve by providing a stable platform for muscle movement and transmitting force to the hand.

Good stuff, as usual. I particularly like your emphasis on the motion to contact being upward, not forward. Many recreational players do the latter.

I’m not so sure, whilst throwing the elbow up at 45 degrees is ideal, throwing it forward is ok for a basic serve. I’d also say that using this analogy, you’ve got to be careful the student doesn’t develop a lift motion like lifting a kettlebell. I think the most efficient way to learn a serve technique is from a throwing motion and by doing figure of 8/“infinity” swings.

Where is the leading elbow and racket head drop? Where is the top spin? Salute is an active arm motion, while the mental aproach to serve should be that of a dynamic throw driven by torso's upward and forward rotation.

What a game changer! If you can serve with that kind of pace on your knees, is power coming from the legs a myth?
@oneminutetennis

Hi Alex I'm 59 years old. 5'8" have a herniated disc and with zero back movement, I can serve about 105mph. So if 80% if the serve power comes from the legs. I think that potentially I could have 3x faster serve than anyone in history. Or. Maybe. The arm is also important😄

I employ similar thoughts. I often imagine that I'm swatting a moth that has begun to hover by swatting him before he ever sees it coming to avoid his darting away from my weapon.

This technique seems to de-emphasize internal rotation of the shoulder, the part of the serve that most resembles a baseball pitcher's throwing action, in favor of arm extension. Shouldn't we be doing both?

Yes. Your 100% right. Sometimes the problem with making KZfaq lessons that are truly designed to teach is the diversity of the audience. For many senior players the external shoulder rotation that you refer to is not always possible. This video was specifically made for a client who is not as flexible as they used to be. I hope this makes sense because I really try to make practical suggestions for all players. I feel that many online lessons assume that everyone is under 30 and in fantastic physical condition. It's great that your enjoying the site. www.oneminutetennis.com

@@oneminutetennis Many thanks for your reply. I, alas, am one of those mature players whose flexibility is compromised. In the relatively recent past I used my leg thrust to help "load" my shoulder but I'm now finding that much more difficult to do (and probably harder on my rotator cuff). I will try concentrating arm extension ( the shot put motion) now as you suggest. I presume that will result in more spin and less pace? You seem to get lots of pace (ie forward speed). Is some of it coming from trunk rotation?

Hi David. If you have time. E mail me on oneminutetennis@gmail.com. I'll arrange a zoom call and tell you how I get that crazy racket speed. I'm in Spain at the moment. So I'm on Central European time.

David, good point about the internal shoulder rotation. It's an essential component of a good service motion. However, if you look closely, there's adequate internal rotation. Without it, he would not be pronating as well as he does. And he could never generate that amount of pace without the internal shoulder rotation either. There's lot of moving parts to the serve, and he's quite adept and fluid with all of them. With age, I share your physical limitations. Most importantly, we can still have fun, even with advanced age. Lastly, age will never diminish our passion. I wish you good health and continued improvement.

So the common error is not making the normal salute and turning the palm away, as shown at 01:10. The fix is to make the normal salute followed by the Roman salute. Because if you make the common error, it will then be impossible to make the Roman salute. But if you make the Roman salute, it means you made the proper normal salute earlier, Is that the idea? 🤔

Hi. Glad you like the video. But, I was in Germany last month and the Roman salute is still illegal there. Also in Austria and I think several other European countries. But .. fortunately it's legal in the tennis game 😉

No. The Roman salute is illegal in many countries. Originally from Rome and embraced by many fascists such as Mussolini. But it's worth the risk of it helps your service 😉
