This is how we froze optically clear 650 gallon ice blocks for the IceTop air shower array part of the IceCube Neutrino Observatory. But we took it one step further. At the bottom of the tanks we had (well, have, they are frozen in place) corculation pumps to both mi's the water and push the water through a degasser. That way as the dissolved gasses got more concentrated as the ice was forming from the top down, we could pull the gasses out to avoid the bubbles at the bottom.

Clear ice is also really useful for drinks that aren't cold when you pour such as fresh tea. In a large cup, the tea at the, bottom will not be chilled by your ice if it's floating to the top. However, if you use clear ice, there are no bubbles to make it float. Therefore, it will chill the bottom, where your straw goes. I initially came up with this justification when I was working a bar and was told there was no practical use for clear ice, and that it was just so the drinks look fancy. I sat and thought about it for a few days, and when I got a tea at my local gas station, I realized that the ice wasn't chilling the bottom.

The white haze in ice is not only because of impurities, it’s because ice expands while freezing, so when the outside is already frozen solid and the water in the center freezes, it expands and produces cracks.

One way I know of is to freeze it very slowly. Someone I know who was a bar tender. He would fill a drink cooler with water, like the big plastic ones you might take with you when going to a beach, and he would let it sit out in the sun to get it nice and moderately warm. Then wrap towels around it then wrap it in sramwrap then set it in his deep freezer. The cooler and all the towels would help insulate it and keep its temperature high but very slowly losing it energy and freezes. Takes like 3 days for it to freeze but boy it is very clear.

Ice expands as it freezes, and ice cubes freeze from the outside in, so since the sides freeze first, they all push at the water in the middle, raising the water level in the middle higher and higher while the sides freeze further and further in, until you're left with a spike in the middle where the water level was forced the highest That's just speculation though

To make clear ice without bubbles, you can try the following methods: 1. Purified Water: Start with purified or distilled water, as it contains fewer impurities and minerals that can contribute to bubble formation. Avoid using tap water, as it often contains dissolved gases and impurities that can create bubbles in the ice. 2. Boiling Water: Boil the water before freezing it. This helps release any dissolved gases that may be present, reducing the chances of bubbles forming in the ice. 3. Slow Freezing: Allow the water to freeze slowly. One way to achieve this is by using an insulated cooler or an ice mold with an insulated layer. Slow freezing helps the ice form more evenly, reducing the likelihood of trapped air bubbles. 4. Directional Freezing: Set up a container with a barrier, such as a divider or cover, to encourage directional freezing. This means that the ice freezes from one side to the other, allowing trapped air and impurities to escape from the opposite side. This technique can help produce clearer ice with fewer bubbles. 5. Distilled Water Spray: As the water starts to freeze, you can periodically spray a fine mist of distilled water over the partially frozen surface. This can help remove any remaining impurities or bubbles on the surface, resulting in clearer ice. 6. Ice Ball Molds: If you're looking to make clear ice spheres, specialized ice ball molds can be used. These molds usually have a top and bottom section that allow for directional freezing, resulting in clearer ice spheres with minimal bubbles. It's important to note that achieving completely clear ice without any bubbles can be challenging. Even with these techniques, it's possible to have some minor imperfections or trapped air. However, following these methods should help you achieve clearer ice compared to regular ice cubes.

Or you can use an ultrasonic cleaner meant for glasses / jewelry / small parts, put it in the freezer and the whole block will be clear. Given the unit doesn't malfunction due to low temperatures, Maybe freeze at a few degrees under freezing point. Though would haft to bypass the timer but the unit probably wont overheat due to being in the freezer. The ultrasonic waves create micro implosions releasing the air in the water.
