The story of John Candy switching trailers with Maureen O'Hara just goes to show Candy’s kindness and generosity towards others around him. He was such a kind soul that was too pure for this world. Candy truly was one of a kind!
@stevenmcd4741

I believe the rest of that story is that the producers were so embarrassed to have a big star like John Candy in such a small trailer that they quickly found money in the budget to get him a new trailer as big as the one he gave to her.

Hey man thank you for this. Seriously. I’ve long thought about what could have been for Candy’s career as a dramatic actor and this video really does amazing job of showcasing how he was about to break out as such. I don’t know how you wrote and compiled this video without crying several times, because I shed a tear just watching it. This was a family favorite in my house growing up, and I’m glad someone shed light on it. It was long overdue, and you did a spectacular job of it. Thanks again.

Not a single dud from this channel. I saw Planes, Trains and Automobiles two months ago. Your infectious enthusiasm played a huge part in giving it a watch at last. @@hattorihanzo2275 No. It's just one of those movies I knew I've got to see, but just never found the right opportunity at first. I came close 2022, but it didn't happen. Then finally around Thanksgiving last year I thought it was about time for me to check it out, so I ordered a John Hughes box set (Where it was included with 4 other films he's written and/or directed). And now after seeing it I'm even more eager to watch whatever I haven't seen from Candy or Hughes yet.

This movie brought together three generations of my family. My grandpa loved Maureen O'Hara from old John Wayne movies. I loved John Candy for his comedies and my mom loved a romantic comedy. We were all Catholic, hence riddled with guilt. Always has been one of my favorite movies.

It's a shame that this movie isn't more well known. John Candy gave his most likable performance, in my opinion, Ally Sheedy is sweet as his love interest, and Maureen O'Hara is also superb, having been persuaded to come out of a twenty year retirement thanks to Candy's persuasion.

Absolutely. Such a great scene. Supposedly, he was very, very nervous during the filming as he was pictured with so many other great actors. Also, the portion of that scene where they cut from the present (in the restaurant) to the past (with Tommy Lee Jones) while he's smoking a cigarette is editing genius. Check it out.

I mean, somehow Paramount heard you with your awesome Planes, Trains and Automobiles video and brought out the lost footage along with the 4K of that film. Hoping this video does the trick for Only the Lonely :) Except it’s a 20th Century property… which makes it wishful thinking.

I absolutely love this movie. It is one of my favorites. When I lived in Chicago I went to St. John Cantius--the church that the characters go to and get married in--every week for mass; not because it was in the movie, but I just thought that was a cool fact. John Candy is such a great counterpart to Maureen O'Hara in this picture. I am so happy it exists. I also love how they have old Comiskey in the movie too.

You had my like even before I saw a frame of this video. Only the Lonely is a fantastically underrated romantic comedy. I know the chemistry between Candy and O’Hara is always singled out but I think what really makes the movie transcend is also the chemistry between Candy and Ally Sheedy. The fact that it has it both ways is the real reason the movie works so well. You believe O’Hara can be Candy’s mom and you can believe that Sheedy would fall in love with Candy.

It's pretty much a tale as old as time: almost all comedic actors never get the credit they deserve for their acting chops until they do more dramatic roles. It usually takes films like this one or something like Jim Carrey in "The Truman Show" to go "wow, that dude is a good actor!"

John Candy's four greatest performances, in order: PTaA. Only the lonely. Uncle Buck. JFK. The first three, because they perfectly married his strengths, both as a fantastic comedian, and a serious dramatic actor who wore his heart on his sleeve and could effortlessly bring you to tears. Although his role in JFK was brief, it was fucking spectacular, and stands as the closest we will ever get to witnessing Candy's skill in a full blown dramatic performance.
