Headed over to Blue Bell Railway and enjoyed a day going up and down the line. I came across a second hand LNER V2 by Bachmann in one of the small shops on the platform.
On this video we takle adding tender pickups to the loco to improve its running and add some very nice sound by YouChoos DCC Decoder by Zimo to run around my Model Railway.
I hope you all enjoy the video and possibly learn something from it.

First video I've seen on your channel; I like the format you've taken on showing repair clips and clips from your day out, not seen this format before, keep up the good work! Your V2 is a lovely model, I bought the same model but BR black; the BR green is nice but I already have a Triang Hornby Scotsman in BR green, so thought it just looked too similar, personal preference but I think the black suits it slightly better anyway!

I used to be a volunteer at the Bluebell! Have you thought about soldering on unravelled paper clips? These make pretty good pickups, you just have to get them thecrightvyension to avoid excessive friction against the wheels.

You did a great job there Neal, I'm afraid I've stopped buying Bachman steam locomotives (not diesel) ,I always wanted a B1 and bought a split chassis version, it wasn't long before the wheel centre's went then the chassis moved apart when running, the second hand dealer I bought it off took it back and sold me the later version, the coupling rods kept jamming up so that went back, I swapped that for 3 over 40 year old Airfix class 31s , they have run on my garden railway without problems, none of my Bachman steam locomotives are serviceable now, I find the best locomotives are Wrenn as detail isn't as important outside, thank you for your video Neal.

Another great video Tris and nice work on the locomotive. Peters Spares makes replacement axle sets for split chassis locomotives and Bachmann also still do some spares for them. I have a Lord Nelson class and one of its axles has started to split but I’ve stuck some epoxy on it for now as it hasn’t completely gone. It is a common problem I’m afraid.

I think the V2 has three cylinders with cranks set at 120, 120+alpha, 120-alpha, (because the inner cylinder is inclined at alpha degrees). I think that means that there are six beats per revolution of the drivers. Also, the beats are slightly unevenly spaced because of the uneven crank settings. That means that there should be six beats of the engine per revolution of the drivers, with slightly uneven beats. Some call this the Gresley Beat. The Zimo chip won't let you replicate the slightly uneven beat, I believe, but it will let you set six beats per revolution. Great video, by the way, very interesting.

Great job on that loco Tris, and you must sort out the wheels so that you can run it regularly. It's too nice, and you've put too much work in, for it to just sit on a shelf! Good shots at the Bluebell too. Given that it's less than 10 miles from where I live, and yet I've not been for almost 50 years, I'm disgusted with myself! Will get along there soon.

I know 😅this was a while ago now, but after watching your narrow gauge series you have done more recently have gone back to catch up with where you got to with the loft layout. For the q class unfortunately there is no rtr model available currently that I know of. However south Eastern finecast produce a white metal kit which is quite nice. Available from squires these days. 😊

I've got the newer (non-split chassis) version of this V2 and with a bit of weathering is now a beautiful loco. With the new Bachmann model being given an RRP of £200 - 230 your older model is worth the TLC you're investing in it. You're so close to getting a cracking loco there, for the sake of a well-documented repair to the wheels. As someone else has mentioned Peter's Spares offer the replacement plastic wheel unions for a few £, but as you're such a whizz with the 3D printer could you rustle something up on that? Enjoying the channel Tris so keep up the good work. All the best - I'm off to give my V2 a quick run around the layout.

Great work! The wheel issue is likely to be a broken axle, a common fault on split chassis loco's. I had it on a Hall I bought, but they were easily replaced with a set off ebay

Great work on the V2. The split front wheel is a pain though 😒 An after thought with the 3MT and 4MT, a number of them worked along the Cambrian Coast line in the 1960s which was also were the Dukedogs and 43xx ran. I know the liveries are different but a nice link between some of your classes of engines, therefore an excuse to get a 3MT

Usually the wheel problem is the centre part of the axel has split. You can buy a set and it includes one with a drive cog on it. I have a few of the split chassis and it is a common problem. Got mine from Peters Spares.

Hi Enjoyable video including real and model locos. Bachmann will sell you direct spare axles to fix your wheel issue. They are not expensive and it is an easy fix. The old plastic ones suffer from fatigue and stress poor design.

I have an old Bachmann V2 and have the same problem with the wheels. Apparently it's a common problem as the insulated axle that holds the wheels apart splits, which means the wheels are no longer held firmly. I haven't fixed mine yet, but I believe it is possible to buy replacement axle parts.

As already mentioned, the wheels coming apart is because the axle has shattered, I had this problem with my V1 and luckily I have just gotten a 3d printer so I mocked some up and printed them. I posted the stl to thingiverse and it should be compatible with your V2 if you still need to fix it

I had a V2 that did what yours did - sadly it was a time before 3d printers were available! the wheels sit in a plastic collar which will have cracked, hence the wheels coming out. I imagine it'll be a simple 3d print to copy the old ones and slot your wheels back in!

Was it worth it????? A good question. I could say no just buy the latest one and save yourself time but is that all there is??? It's evident you are a very creative and skilful person annd in doing this project you gained more experience so was it worth it and was it satisfying is obviously a yes. I'm old and there are things i do like build brass O gauge loco kits that can frustrate me at times. My brother has a 3d resin printer and also a,laser cutter for wood, he tells me i should get one, my answer is it's one thing to have the printer and another to use the and master the software that drives it. You are obviously a person with skills to do this, so was it worth your effort??? Think of the experience you are gaining?
