There is quite a lot of misinformation floating around about what you should and shouldn't use to lubricate your model locomotives. In this video we go back to 1963 to find out what Tri-ang Railways tell us to use. We track down the source of "3-in-1 mineral oil will dissolve your train", we give some suggestions on what is safe to use and we look at what Hornby, Dapol, Heljan, Bachmann, Lima and others recommend. We also debunk a popular "Is 3 in 1 Oil / WD 40 Bad for Model Trains Mythbusting video".
There are two deliberate production mistakes in this video. Can you spot them?

I just use Singer sewing machine oil - It's a fully synthetic oil and is meant to be safe on plastics. Liquid Bearings and Liberty oil would be a safe bet too, but they're expensive and hard to get here in Australia. Good video and glad you did some research and not rely on a single KZfaq video like some :)

Me and my dad always used 3 in 1 oil on my old locos and all running very well still you done want oil on body work anyway very good video I must say

I use the Gaugemaster oil and I use model plane/boat grease for the gears as they are plastic safe lubricants :). I bought a model of a Lima Class 60 and when I first ran it. it squealed like a pig and I will tell you why that was the case. The idiot that owned it before he sold it to the model train store had used WD40 and it got all over the motor as well as there is loads oil marks on the bodyshell. So I had some fun stripping it down to the motor core and I had to use lighter fuel to get the crap off the motor. It was a lengthy process but I had some fun cleaning it up though. I applied some new "proper" model oil and grease and it runs like new as it should do.

Hi John great video and it got me thinking about another common failure is with the gear wheels on Mainline loco's, they are prone to splitting and I wonder if this is also attributed to the use of mineral oils which makes the plastic brittle. I personal try to always use plastic safe products and like you say, a couple extra Pounds is better spent than ruining a loco new or old. Craig.

That is a good question Craig. It would depend on what type of plastic the gears are made out of. The instructions I have for a few mainline locos recommend Daywat oil, interestingly you can still get this from Knightwing in the UK. Could be a combination of the mineral oil, temperature changes from operation and the type of plastic that was used. Hornby definitely are using a different type of plastic in their underframes than they do in the body shells. I've had a decent amount of success 3D printing replacement gears for older locos, seems to improve performance and PLA seems to be a little more robust as well. A very good video, the people that make WD40 and 3in1 say not to use them on our models. 3in1 has an additive of essential oil that causes plastic to go brittle, it's in there as a cleaner. WD40 is of course not a lubricant.

Interesting video the guy in my local model shop told me to use baby oil he said that was what he used Lorraine

Hi Lorraine. I think most baby oils are a type of mineral oil with fragrance added depending on the brand. So my guess would be that baby oil would have the same issues that you'd have with 3-in-1. Another thing to keep in mind is that some recommendations handed down over the years were done out of necessity especially during and shortly after world war 2. So they might work but may not be the best option today.

I think people thought it was safe to smoke in 1961 too right? Doing something for a long time doesn't mean there isn't a better way to do it today or that it's a good idea. Several manufacturers specifically tell you not to and Hornby have warnings for years, as you saw in the video :)
