These are excellent devices and well worth their cost! Before learning about weak magnets and their effects, I chased a fault with a Dublo 8f which woukd run but gradually slow to a stop (getting bloody hot in the process) and eventually purchased a new motor......I also naively ran a 3 rail mallard till it go so hot the armature disintegrated for which I had to get a replacement........both, it later transpired were due to weak magnets after which I purchased one of these remagnetisers and am now gradually working trough my Dublo and Triang fleets a wiser man!

Hi Sam, I have just watched your review of Ron Dodd's remagnitising device.Very informative as usual. The old Triang Hiawatha reminds me of running problems i had with this loco and some of the Triang diesels made in the fifties. They "bounced" along on the moulded chairs that hold the rails in place on the old Hornby steel and Peco tracks.I sat with the loco/locos upside down between my knees with full power applied. With medium emery cloth held not to hard on each of the 4 flanges the job for the loco was done in about 20 minutes. With some Triang locos, diesels the wheelsets can be removed and turning the flanges in your hands with the emery cloth in a semicircular shape gets the same result.Again a 20 minute job. When cleaning the drivers of old Dublo steam locos i again invert apply nearly full power and using an ear bud soaked in lighter fuel the wheels are soon cleaned of 50 year old "mud".A track rubber can be used but lighter fuel is quicker. Also i find pipe cleaners, very flexible and inexpensive very handy for cleaning out Dublo and Wrenn brush tubes/holders of any oil etc.

Hi Robbie, thanks very much for the message - I've swapped most of my big-flanged tri-ang chassis for later ones now, but I want to give your idea a try - sounds like a winner to me! As for wheel cleaning, that's the method I actually use too - great minds think alike, I think the lighter fluid is much better, since its less abrasive! All the best mate, Sam :)

Hi Sam,I do a bit of swapping things around myself like in my just added 3 Castles video!! Your friend John kindly told me some time ago that lighter fuel on an ear bud was a great way to clean diesel traction tyres, inverted running etc.It most certainly works as neglected they soil the track and the problems multiply.I am not a big fan of traction tyres but i have a Trix A3 with traction tyres which hauls 11 Dublo super detail coaches with ease.

Hi. I live in the United States and have a special American Flyer locomotive that has a direct current motor with a "permanent" field magnet. The manufacturer that made these made only two types of engines with direct current motors and the rest had alternating current motors with coil field magnets instead of permanent magnets installed. The alternating current locomotives have a mechanical reverse mechanism that is automatic. The magnet is extremely similar to the size of these Hornby/Wrenn magnets and has lost a considerable amount of strength over the past 70 years. It is an extremely large locomotive with a wheel base of 4-8-4. It is an "S" scale locomotive that has a solid die-cast chassis AND a thick, die-cast metal body. Its magnet is probably within the specs of a Dublo magnet, but nowhere near strong enough to pull a train at appropriate speed considering how much larger it is than oo scale locos. The locomotive is supposed to be able to haul about 6-7 coaches at a time at considerably high speeds and is struggling just getting up to speed light engine. It is all-original and I'd rather not have to replace the magnet, but simply recharge it. I can't exactly justify spending nearly £200 on this device considering shipping will be high for oversees delivery. I was wondering if you may possibly be willing to recharge this magnet for me? If you could contact me directly to my email to work out payment options, that would be just wonderful! My email is: Camdensmodelrailways@yahoo.com Thank you very much for your time! Camden Justice

Excellent demo Sam, I am pleased it worked for you. I have decided to buy one, I have just purchased another 4 old locos so now have about 10 so decided to buy one. My only concern, which Ron has not responded to yet, what would happen to a DCC Decoder when a charge of electricity is pushed through the KEEP. My older locos have all be upgraded to DCC.

Simon Young Thats good news! Its a great piece of kit! I'm not sure about that really - maybe it doesn't involve a charge of electricity - I assumed it was just a powerful magnetic field - best to check though! :) Let me know, Cheers, Sam

Hi great and interesting film. Could I ask I'm having trouble with hornby ringfield motors that are about 30 rears old. They only start moving when the controller is over half power. Do they need remagnetising and would this machine do a ringfield magnet even if it can't be removed .Many thanks

I loved to see the steamy running at the end more than watching your demo. I'd forgotten that this was one of your videos I hadn't yet viewed. Nice demo in any case. How about a story which ends in calamity? Terrifying Train Troubles As we know, Sam was lucky enough to drive a real 9F engine on the GCR. One day, in the real world, he visited the same preserved railway. He was invited to be the Fireman of Witherslack Hall, a GWR 4-6-0 Tender Engine. This was when he learned he was dealing with a bomb on wheels. Worst of all, the Senior Fireman who was supposed to be on duty that day had fallen ill. Nervous Sam felt very small and alone. The Driver took pity on Sam. "Just follow my instructions, and you should be OK," the gentleman advised. Swallowing nervously, Sam nodded silent agreement. It was scary for anyone who hadn't fired an engine before in their lifetime. Witherslack Hall whistled and pulled her train away from Loughborough Station on time, or rather a few minutes ahead of schedule. Sam listened to instructions as well as he could, but he found he couldn't keep the fire hot enough. He was inexperienced, and the absence of the Senior Fireman was no consolation. A disaster was about to unfold. Sam looked at the water level in the Gauge Glass; the water was bobbing up and down as it should. It wasn't at it's intended height. Panic gripped hold of Sam, as he remembered something far too late. "Oh no!" he wailed, the look of shock-horror on his face. "I should have checked the tender was topped-up, before the engine moved! I'm an idiotic...." Before he could say the word novice, Witherslack Hall blew off at the safety valve in an alarming way. She had stalled halfway up a steep incline. The water level had disappeared completely, the boiler drying up in its wake. "Jump!" screamed the Driver in alarm. Sam made a death-defying leap out of the cab, the Driver close behind. They rolled down behind a hedge and stayed there holding their ears against the deafening noise. The real disaster struck. "KA-BOOM!" shouted the expanding boiler. Witherslack Hall suddenly exploded, pieces of broken and twisted metal flying in all directions! Sam let out a scream.... "AAH!" ....and then silence settled. He and the Driver timidly emerged from their hiding place. "It wasn't your fault, Sam," soothed the Driver. "We've had this sort of thing happen before." Sam was surprised to learn the Senior Fireman had only remembered to send in a sick note, at the last minute. Not very good of him. "Now I know how terrifying a boiler explosion can be," sniffed Sam. The boy went home shaking like a leaf, but thankfully the dreadful disaster wasn't enough to put him off visiting preserved railways altogether. He still loves steam engines to this day, and it's never going to change. Make no mistake.

Good demo, Sam, useful kit for you now you have a large collection of locos. Regard to Hiawatha, I wonder if a later Princess chassis with smaller flanges would enable her to run on your track as is, using the loco body and tender you already have. Cheers, Cliff.

One thing should mention, for those folks who wear mechanical watches, do take them off and away because the hairspring will pick up magnetism very easily in mechanical watches and then first thing you notice is its doing 3 hours in an hour timekeeping and a pain in the bum to get the magnetism out of your hairspring lol

That certainly is a potential issue - but what can you expect when you're buying from an individual who builds them himself? To be fair though, he should be gracious about returns/replacements/refunds - don't let that go to rest, make sure he does refund or replace - open a case with ebay if he doesn't. Thanks for watching, Sam :)
